"My uncle is comfortable at Kelly's Hillside Manor. He likes the other people who live there. He likes the guy who owns the place who also takes him to all his doctors' appointments. My uncle shares a room with a fella and they get along really well. The owner's wife is from the Philippines and she does all the cooking, so she cooks Filipino food and my uncle really likes it. The owner takes them out for a pizza once every two weeks and asks them if they want to go to a movie and if they do, he takes them. Don, the owner, is a really great guy who cares a lot about the people. He always talks to them and listens to what they have to say."

"The Brentwood at Niles was clean, it was nice, and the people seemed happy. We looked at both assisted living and memory care. We are looking at assisted living for now but it will eventually be memory care for my friend. It was nice, we were pleased with it. I only really met one staff member and she was friendly. I don't know what specific activities they have but they had some people singing yesterday. The staff said that they have a lot more but we didn't ask what they were."

"My husband will be moving to Blueberry Hill Assisted Living. We had a very nice tour of the place, and the staff was very nice and informative. They also have lots of things for the residents to get involved in. I don't think the assisted living room we saw was the largest, but there was nothing wrong with it. The upkeep of the place was very good, too. We went through the dining area, and it was very clean."

"We toured StoryPoint St. Joseph. They have a nice courtyard area. It is a fairly new and fairly updated facility. They had lots of activities and things they offered as well. They have a salon. They have masses, bingo, cards, and movie nights. They have similar amenities. The staff who gave the tour was very open, honest, and personable. It seemed they kept it up well. It is modern and updated."

"I visited Brookdale Granger. The nutrition department director was very friendly, very nice, and very knowledgeable. She did offer us a dessert that they were giving the residents while they were there. It felt like home. You could tell that everyone was knowledgeable about each other. Even as I walked in, they were asking if there was anything they could do to help. It was a great environment."

"My mother is at the assisted living facility of The Whitcomb Senior Living Tower. We appreciate the care and concern of all the staff. It doesn't matter if it's the med passers or the owners or the people at the front desk; everyone is just very nice and very kind. It's a beautiful location, and it brings my mother peace to see the water every day. It's downtown, so she's in the heart of it all. If she wants to go visit something, she can. There's a bandshell there, too, so she can listen to music. People even get married there, so she could also watch weddings and things like that. It makes her feel good. It's a hotel that they converted, so there is no kitchenette there, but honestly, that's one of the reasons why I like it. The residents have to go downstairs to eat, so they get to see people and interact with everyone. It's beautiful. It's over 100 years old, and so it has the old architecture on the inside, and they have all these old pictures of what it looked like before. I like how the rooms are just the right size, too. They're a little bit smaller compared to other ones, but I found this with my mom, at least, that the more rooms she has, the more cluttered it is, and the greater the risk of her falling because she'll trip over stuff. I personally like that it's smaller but clean. For activities, they have painting classes, cards, and movie nights. The residents that I have met are all very nice and very kind. I honestly don't have any worries there or anything. No matter where my mom has been, she's never liked the food, so that's what she complains about. I really think it's because she has nothing else to complain about, though. They have a salad bar, and I think that's really nice. They also have food that she could have if she doesn't like what they're serving, so they have options there. It's the cheapest that we found. When I called them for the first time, I flat-out asked why they are so cheap. It's because they don't have a kitchen up there, and they said they want to have an affordable and nice place for everyone to live. They said they all deserve to live with dignity, and that really describes everyone's overall attitude there. They want it to be nice for everybody."

"Tanglewood Trace was one level all around. It's very nice. It had patios, grills, and all those kinds of things. Shawna toured us around and she was very nice, too. She was even going to give my sister a discount for two months. The food looked very good when we were going by it. They have two dining rooms. They have three meals a day and they have a breakfast bar that's always open with cereals, juices, and water that the residents on either side can get. They also have a beauty shop, card games, board games, libraries, and all kinds of stuff like that."

"We visited Brentwood at Elkhart Assisted Living. They were thorough, friendly, and detailed, so I guess that's just about what you need to look for to start with. They showed us the facility, and they showed us the rooms. They showed all the features and the activities that they had. The individuals were very friendly and very professional. That's impressive when you see that. They were pretty straightforward and concise with what they were saying, so I think that was a very strong point. The director who showed us the units there said that we aren't ready for assisted living. We are not actually, but we're trying to look ahead to the future. The assisted living facility seemed more like a nursing home facility. It was not something that we would fit into. We're more active and social than Brentwood has to offer. The ones who gave us the tour were very professional. They covered everything and wanted to make sure that they met our needs. They were just very easy to talk to, and made you feel welcome. They weren't just trying to sell you something; they wanted to make sure it was going to be a good fit for the person."

"Woodland Terrace was excellent. The food was very good. It was very clean, very neat, and very organized. They had nice rooms with nice lights and fresh air, and everything smelled good. Everything about it was good. The staff was very accommodating and very cheerful. They brought everybody ice creams in the afternoon and were just upbeat and uplifting. The rooms were bright and clean. They had a lot to do, like taking you by bus to concerts and different tables set up for games. The director was there walking from table to table. However, the area was in the middle of a field near nothing and perhaps it would be easier if something was closer to take people to get groceries. They were just not close to anything. "

"We toured White Oaks. What I liked about it was that it was very busy. There were lots of people around, residents, and staff. Kathy is the one who took me on the tour and she did a great job answering questions. She followed up as well. For the activities, I asked questions like, "I think my mom would need someone beside her if she went on an activity". So she told me how they would handle that situation. We didn't see any of the regular rooms. They have two sections that are for memory care, and they're nice rooms. They're big enough that you could have a twin bed, a dresser, a recliner, or a loveseat. They were big enough and clean. I like their place, too. I think the building was well-maintained and it appeared to be clean. I didn't see anything that needed to be done."

"We live at The Village at Arborwood Senior Community. It's an independent living community and we've been here for about a year and a half. It's been a very positive experience. We're very pleased with it. They're very loving in the sense that they take good care of the people who are here. They're open to suggestions. We've enjoyed it. We're very positively oriented towards it. There's a library onsite. There's an activity sheet. At the beginning of each month, they publish a brochure consisting of about six to maybe ten pages with the activities that are planned for that month and a calendar of events so that if you want to see what's going on next week, it's easy enough to do and then they have buses that take you shopping if you wish to. They have different activities for people, both men and women. They've got bingo. The food is ala carte. You get a menu of different items at the beginning of the week, and then you select what you'd like. If you like to have a meal at that time, you can. If you don't want a meal, you don't do that. It works out pretty well. They'll have singers come in. It's a very positive experience for people who live here. I don't think I've ever run across anyone who has a bad word for it. Like every place, you probably can find room for improvement, but I don't have any problems at all. I'm sure most of the people here don't either. They're very positively oriented towards it. It's just a good community and it's a safe community. The staff members listen. They fix things if needed. They're very attentive to what you have to say. If you need help, they're there to give you help. They have people who come in, for example, they'll do your wash if you want and they maintain your area. They'll do whatever is required to make sure that you're comfortable. They have the pull cords in case you need help. There are a lot of activities that you can choose from, from card playing to bingo to bowling. They have Wii bowling and a ton of different activities. The value that you get here is exceptional for the money that you pay. We couldn't be happier. We're not rich, but at least we're not destitute either because of the monthly payments."

"My dad was a resident of Wellbrooke of South Bend. They did their best with him, but he wasn't happy there. Other patients came into his room, used his bathroom, and slept in his bed. He's about six feet one inch, and the bed barely fits him. It was just like a dorm room. And where he's at now, we had his bed from home, and he could have his furniture. So, that was a drawback. He was just in a unit. It's separate from the other areas. It was just like an open concept, and they had activities. It was mostly women, and my dad isn't into doing arts and crafts and activities like that. The facility was clean and very nice, and they had a happy hour on Friday. The workers were good, but they were understaffed. They had one guy there who worked so hard, and my husband sometimes would have to shower my dad because he wouldn't get a shower for a week. Once a month, they had a Sunday brunch, which was nice."
