"My uncle is comfortable at Kelly's Hillside Manor. He likes the other people who live there. He likes the guy who owns the place who also takes him to all his doctors' appointments. My uncle shares a room with a fella and they get along really well. The owner's wife is from the Philippines and she does all the cooking, so she cooks Filipino food and my uncle really likes it. The owner takes them out for a pizza once every two weeks and asks them if they want to go to a movie and if they do, he takes them. Don, the owner, is a really great guy who cares a lot about the people. He always talks to them and listens to what they have to say."

"We did a tour of Brentwood at Niles, and we like that place as well. We looked at an apartment, and the one-bedroom apartment was pretty nice. The staff was very sweet. She was very nice and walked us through the whole thing. She took us on a little tour and showed us around. They were very respectful and nice. We just went in and looked at the dining area, but there weren't very many people in there at the time. We didn't eat anything, but it looked nice in there. There was an exercise class, but we just walked past that."

"I toured Blueberry Hill Assisted Living Lawton. I like that it was clean. The people were very friendly. The rooms were of a good size. They're not tiny, but they're not enormous either. All the meals are provided. The person during the tour was very informative, answered any questions that we had, and generally showed us around the facility. So she did a great job. The people stay in a room. They have activities that you can go on and they have meals that are prepared. The residents don't ever cook. They have three meals a day and a snack in the evening."

"They welcomed me into their home and it was a very warm feeling. The staff was very warm and informational. The rooms were top-notch. I have other aunts with me that were saying, "Can I put my reservations?" They had a location for a spiritual setting, a piano, a bowling lane, a theater, and an exercise room. They had a common area and a kitchen and a dining area specific for memory care. They, with supervision, can take part in other activities such as the exercise, the movie theater, the game, and the church, and they have an outdoor patio to themselves. I was not able to sample the food, but I did see pictures and the menu to complement the pictures as to what they have. It's all prepared in-house and all-natural."

"Emeritus for my mother is just like being home. She has a very lovely, comfortable room. The staff is excellent and they have the best activity director that I have ever met. He is absolutely wonderful. He has so many lovely activities for all the residents. He makes it his personal agenda to get my mother to participate. I cannot say enough about the staff. They're all amazing, very loving and caring people. They treat the residents as if they were their parents. "

"My mom has been living at Whitcomb Tower Retirement for 11 years, and right now she's good. It's a very old hotel in the downtown area where you have an individual room. My mother has a nice two-bedroom with a living room and a bathroom. The décor is from the 1800s, and they live right along the shoreline on the bluff of Lake Michigan, so there are places to walk. They have one-bedrooms for the nursing floor and a dining room for that nursing area. My mother can go downstairs to a really nice dining room and have her food there. There's also laundry. They try to have some entertainment come in once a week, plus bingo, exercise, book clubs, and outings."

"I went to Tanglewood Trace. The size of the community was favorable. The different levels of care were impressive, even at the hospice level. The staff during the tour was knowledgeable. She was very forthcoming with information about the facility and additional resources that we could access to help with cost and care. Some repairs were needed, but they seemed to be in progress, so the condition of the building was good. It didn't smell like urine, which is a big plus. There was plenty of room. It's spacious, but for members of the community who have mobility challenges, that spaciousness could also be a challenge for them."

"Harmony At Elkhart is a brand-new community. It's just down the street from my parents' house and it is great. There are minimal residents, but our concern is if we move mom in there and she runs out of money, we have to move her out. As long as you've got money to afford the cost of living, it's a gorgeous building. It has great apartments and wonderful staff that we met. They have daily activities. They have snacks all the time for the residents. Their menus are posted. They have light housekeeping for the residents and laundry weekly. The staff said they had elevators at least on each end. It was three stories. They have a billiard room and a game room that families could take their family members into. They had studio apartments, one-bedroom apartments, and two-bedroom apartments. Every one of the staff members was friendly. The cleaning ladies who were in the hallways were saying hi and greeting us. The sales rep that took us around was great. We didn't meet an unfriendly person. They were nice. It's brand new, so it's still clean. It was presented well and it's well taken care of. The landscaping crews were outside doing some work when we were there."

"Bickford of Portage offers a variety of activities, has a medical staff on call and on premises, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. The day we went there, we walked into the lobby and saw that they had a make-believe volleyball net spread across the big room. There was a whole bunch of people in their wheelchairs and regular chairs playing volleyball with about six or eight giant beach balls. They were having a blast. I wanted to join them. It just looked like fun. There's a formal dining room and everybody meets there to eat. They have housekeeping once a week. They occasionally have outings to an ice cream place for everybody to get ice cream. It just sounds like the ideal thing. They also accept pets. The rooms we saw exceeded my expectations, actually. The lady that let us around, Cheryl, was very knowledgeable and very helpful. She listened to our questions and answered them. She gave us a very nice tour. We met someone who helps the residents with bathing. They also have a hair salon. They just have everything. They only have 46 apartments too. My sister can take all of her own furniture and all the things that are hers. When we went by, it was the Fourth of July. Every door in the hallway was decorated with Fourth of July themed projects that the residents had done themselves. They also had nice gardens. The ladies can plant flowers. It's all raised work areas, so they can stand or even sit to help plant flowers and get them ready. We were there during lunchtime, and they had shrimp. Everybody was eating and seemed to be enjoying it. They had a wonderful menu always with two entrees from which you could choose and a variety of vegetables. Everything is one floor, and it's almost kind of a rectangle shaped. You can essentially just walk around the whole place inside. A good friend of mine has her mother-in-law there, and she said that they're very satisfied too."

"They have a very nice facility, recently built. They make you get dressed every day which I think is great because it helps you to start your day. They would take my grandmother for walks and if she needed to meet with her therapist they would try to take her outside on nice days. She loved the food, although they did forget to get her one of the days we were there. She had trouble walking long distances and needed to be pushed in a wheelchair. Overall she was happy with the facility and made the transition a lot easier for her. "

"My step mother moved into the Willows Assisted Living for approximately a month now, so as far as were concerned, everythings been good, but step mom is in an adjustment period. Shes in assisted living, and she had to have help, because she walks through the walker. The atmosphere is very warm, very welcoming, and everybody is friendly. The rooms are very nice, spacious, and we put in a queen-size bed, an apartment-size couch, swivel chair, and a new TV in her room. Its pretty accommodating. The staff is very helpful, very knowledgeable, and does what the boss tells them to do. Theyre comfortable in what theyre doing. They have something going on a minimum of four days out of seven, and they have different activities. For St. Patrick's Day, they decorated all the tables, played games, and one person came in, sang and played the keyboard. It seemed like theyre concerned about the residents and want the people to be happy. Were solely responsible for doctors appointments and medical appointments. The price is one of the motivation factors for us. Its a missionary-type thing. You have to pay out-of-pocket for the first two years minimum; after that if something happened and the resident ran out of money, they will take Medicaid or Social Security, and they do not put you out on the street. Its close to home, really convenient, and were there in 15 or 20 minutes, and that was a real plus for us."

"My parents will move into The Village at Arborwood. The atmosphere is relaxing. There are a lot of residents who move about throughout the day, and they have a lot of different activities for the seniors to participate in. They do offer meals, but that is at an extra charge. The staff seemed very helpful and friendly. The actual rooms were pretty spacious. They're bigger than they were at the other facility. They do offer a two-bedroom, two-bath or a two-bedroom, one-bath, which has a lot of extra storage."

"My mother moved into Wellbrooke of South Bend. It's a new place, it's very nice, the staff is very knowledgeable, and they have a rehab facility on the campus. They've been very accommodating with the food, my mom is a vegetarian, they're working on a menu together about a menu, and that's going well. We have eaten there, and the food was very good. They have a lot of activities, they have a library, and they have a room where they can view films. The facility itself has a lot of windows, so there's light, and a lot of sunlight comes in. Their assisted living section is full, but they're adding onto their facilities. I was very impressed with it."
