The Best Assisted Living Communities in Allegan County, MI

"My mother lived here for about 3 years. I toured several places over the years in the Kalamazoo area and since they were all for profit, as expected they were pleasant while recruiting me. This is a small facility. The staff greets you by name and like family. I was told that when I toured there but didn't really believe it. There are quite a few activities here. Since I paid my mother's invoice, she was always calling me to ask how much she paid for an activity. I was happy to tell her nothing since like most seniors she worried about running out of money. One really doesn't know however until a problem arises how they will respond. This is what happened with my mother after having a stroke. I could never thank the staff enough for the love, support and level of care given to my mother. Over the years I got to know the folks who worked during the day but after her stroke I got to meet several of the night shift as well and they were also wonderful. When they realized my mother would no longer be a resident, it was then they were at their best. It wasn't about the money. It was taking the best possible care of her while she was still there."

"My father-in-law has moved here. The place is small. It is different than a lot of the bigger communities. However, we feel like our father-in-law is getting very good day-to-day care. The people working there are very attentive and very communicative. When it came time to move him into the place, which we did at the last minute, they were very accommodating and extremely helpful to help us get him in there on short notice. Overall, our experience has been very positive so far. My father-in-law is in a room with a bedroom, a bathroom, and a small sitting area. They have three or four activities everyday, which is good. They are taking the residents on outings when they can. My father-in-law seems to like the food too."

"Byron Center Manor looked very nice. The people were friendly. They have nice rooms. The dining area was nice and clean too."

"Bickford of Portage was an outstanding facility. The staff was kind , efficient and patient with my father. In Johns last year he would brag about the food. Was delighted with the outings, The staff made John feel loved and cared for. The building was excellent, clean and well maintained. "The apartment is very nice . Staff is friendly. Food is tasty. There are a variety of activities available nearly everyday. The bus is very convenient for residents if they don't have or want to drive."

"My mother is receiving the Best of Care she could possibly receive. The rooms are always clean. I have been around for many of her meals and the look and smell amazing. She never complains about the food. The staff, I can’t explain the gratitude and appreciation I have for their kindness and patience they have towards their residents. They have amazing activities everyday that keep the residents entertained. I love the Facebook page that keeps me connected when I can’t be there. We also have family and friends that live out of state and they stay connected through their Facebook postings. THANKS SO MUCH!"

"Wynwood of Portage was nice. It definitely was assisted living, not independent, so you don't have really an apartment; you just had more of an efficiency or a big room to yourself. One thing I liked about it was they had small dining rooms on each hall so you got to eat your meals with your neighbors, basically. It was nice, clean, and updated. Staffing seemed good, and they offered physical therapy. It was a little more hands-on, of course, than the independent living places. "

"My mom moved to Commonwealth Senior Living at Grand Rapids. I like that it wasn't too large for her. There are a lot of beautiful facilities in the Grand Rapids area, but this would seem to suit her personality more. It has beautiful views of a pond and some woods, and my mom seems to like the food. On certain days of the week or months, they will have different musicians come in and play. They do crafts and bingo. They do a "Travel Around the World Series" where they bring exotic places to them, so that's fun. They do a lot of different things. They also have a hydroponic garden that grows green leafy vegetables, which they watch grow and then consume."

"My sister had to be placed on the memory on very short notice right at Christmas. They people got her in & squared away when I never thought it would happen. Great service. The staff was excellent & the accommodations wonderful on the 3rd floor! My special thanks to Sheila who made this experience so good. She is not paid enough!"

"Lakeside is one of the best in Holland for a good reason. The director, Don H, is great and even gave me his cell number. He regularly text messages me updates on my mom on his own accord and deals with concerns immediately. Erica, the Director of Nursing, always promptly returns my calls and has been very helpful and informative. The activities director and aides are all great as is the cleaning crew. I am most impressed that the staff has gotten my mom to eat regular healthy meals. Before she would only eat one specific thing. Mom can be difficult/combative and staff is currently working with me to gently get mom to perform her daily care needs as staff, by law, can not force anyone to bathe, change clothing and sheets etc and she can be a challenge in those areas. Their approach is gentle and respectful. I recommend this place if considering long term care. "

"In July of 2019 when my husband and I decided to move back to the Midwest to be near our adult children, I began searching the internet. Rivertown Ridge immediately caught my eye, so I contacted the sales office. Meredith was very kind, patient, and helpful in answering my many questions. In August, we sent in a deposit. One of the best decisions we’ve ever made. Unfortunately, my husband passed away while we were still in Florida, but the genuinely friendly staff at Rivertown Ridge made the move an easier adjustment for me. My apartment, the dining rooms, and common areas are wonderful! There’s a variety of activities, but no one feels pressured to participate. The location is ideal with shopping, hospitals, doctors, and restaurants nearby. I’ve made several new friends here and am so happy to be a resident at Rivertown Ridge. "

"My husband will be moving to Blueberry Hill Assisted Living. We had a very nice tour of the place, and the staff was very nice and informative. They also have lots of things for the residents to get involved in. I don't think the assisted living room we saw was the largest, but there was nothing wrong with it. The upkeep of the place was very good, too. We went through the dining area, and it was very clean."

"The in-person tour at Freedom Village Holland was wonderful. The lunch was good. There was too much to choose from. I had like five choices of main entree. There was dessert, salad bar, and more than I wanted at lunch. I had meatloaf, and that was wonderful. They had chicken, and there were several things on it that I wanted. Jason was wonderful. He was very attentive and asked questions, and we talked a lot. It seemed like I was there for three or four hours, but it was like 1 hour and 55 minutes with the lunch and the tour. I didn't tell him I had a dog at first, and then once I mentioned it, he said with a dog you'd have to be on the first floor and showed me a couple of rooms. The place is pretty expensive, and you kind of buy into that. What turned me off is that I wouldn't necessarily have any money on the side, but that's a very, very impressive site. I've known people who have moved in there. It's beautiful, and it was great. The facility is amazing. It's like a five plus."
