"I use Senior Helpers. I use them primarily for personal assistance for my husband and my father. They come in and they care for them personally if they need help. They have been doing some cooking, preparing meals, and they have been guiding them to take their medicine. They can't give it to them in their hands, but they guide them to take the medicine. They take care of just whatever comes on in the house. They do activities with them, but neither cares for that. My husband plays guitar and has all kinds of things, and my dad is not interested. It has been hard for them. They tried, but they told me that they just haven't found the niche quite right yet. But they do visit with them, and they talk with them. I've asked for this one particular person to be the one that comes back time and time again; she is just so excellent. She'll initiate doing things around the house. She had emptied trash cans in the house for me. I came home several evenings, she was there until 6, and she had finished her tasks in the house. Just that kind of stuff around the house that needs attention and the medication and the meals, that's primarily what they have done. They have done some minor cleaning as well, like cleaning the bathroom or something like that. The lady in the management is always available to me. She knows my name. She has always been very prompt. There was one time when they hadn't billed me for something, so I called them and within minutes they made the correction and they sent me what I needed and called to be sure that they got it right. They're available anytime day and night. I called one night when I was working; I was going to stay all night. I called at eight or nine one night and I just talked to this person that answered, and she took all the information, and the person was at my door at six the next morning. They are very prompt, and she knows who I really prefer. They're very good and they've met our needs."

I honestly don't know what I would have done without the nurses and social worker from Kindred. Learning that they provide support for the family as well as the patient, and that these services would be available up to a year following our loss, was an unexpected blessing. The social worker came during that last day and sat with us as we told stories about my mother and did our best to come to grips with what was happening. I can't speak highly enough of these people. They treated my mother with dignity. The skilled nursing facility she'd been in was dismissive and cold with her. She was miserable and afraid there. When we brought her home and Kindred took over, she was comfortable and free of anxiety for the first time in weeks. She passed quietly, with no fear. That's what Kindred did for us, and it means more than I can say."
