"Mastercare is everything you hope a home care agency will be—reliable, professional, and compassionate. I needed temporary support after a serious illness, and from the assessment to the ongoing care, they handled everything with grace. They took time to match me with the right caregiver, and it made all the difference. My caregiver was punctual, well-trained, and warm-hearted. She helped with bathing, medication reminders, light housekeeping, and even brought in a bit of sunshine on the darker days. If you’re recovering or just need a little extra help at home, you can trust Mastercare to be there when it matters."

"I have been using Right at Home since the 2nd week of September. A lot of their caregivers are from Africa and I would say I'm pretty satisfied. The caregiver that I have is here from 9 from 5, Monday through Friday and she's very good and very caring. When I needed care for a whole weekend, I had caregivers for two 12-hour shifts. When one person wasn't able to come and they were scrambling to get somebody else, the owner ended up coming instead and so that showed accountability and responsibility of the agency to do that. On Tuesday, when my caregiver had to take her husband to the hospital, I ended up having two caregivers, one for the morning and one for the afternoon. "

"I used Synergy Home Care of Prosper for my mom. The in-home care came in and helped prepare her meals, laundry, linen, and stuff like that. There were multiple issues. I thought we would only use it for two weeks. In the initial setup, we were supposed to meet somebody on a Friday. The person didn't show up, it was something to do with traffic. So we had rescheduled to see them Saturday. On Saturday, there was no communication. This was supposed to be the person that they were sending out to introduce themselves to my mom. So therefore, when she started working with her, she didn't know who she was. Instead of showing the day, she's starting to work with her. That Saturday, we not only did not get a call that she wasn't coming, but she didn't show up at all. And then Sunday, randomly, she called and told us that she would be there Wednesday. The services were supposed to start on Tuesday that week. So that left us in a situation where we were trying to find someone before that one day because we had agreed that they were going to do Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. When the lady finally did reach out to us on Sunday, she didn't make any mention of the day that we agreed upon, she was coming on a Wednesday. They changed her out to another lady who showed up to say that it was a failure. The second person they assigned came out for one day. She didn't come back anymore. So then they found a third person, I think it was on Thursday, that she showed up. She was great. She only worked with us one day because she had other clients. So then the following week the person came and I guess the main lady who introduced them to people or brought the people out, she came out with another lady that was supposed to be starting the second week and introduced herself that she'll be the person that will work with my mom. The next day, an hour went by, and she didn't show up. She was supposed to be there. We reached out to the lady again who was coordinating everything and she said she was under the impression that the lady was there. I said no, it's been an hour and ten minutes since she was supposed to be here. She was going to try to get somebody else, who would have been the fifth person in two weeks, but we just discontinued the service. Although we didn't receive the service that we asked for, they still charged the full amount that the individuals worked the full day each day. Not only were they late, but they left a little early, so that was a little bit disappointing. They need to improve their communication, stand by their commitments on the times and dates that they agreed upon, and have reliable personnel who are going to show up. It took a moment for me to get my mom on board with having someone outside the family help, and with this experience, she doesn't want to even try another provider. So, that put a very bad taste in her mouth."

"We had an excellent experience with Visiting Angels in Irving. My father was very hesitant about getting help at home. Olevia came over and explained the entire process to him, how they worked and how it would benefit him. They matched Dad up with Rosie and she has been a blessing for 2 months. She put Dad at ease and was such a big help on her visits. She came twice a week for 2 hour shifts and Dad always looked forward to her visits. Rose was always pleasant and did an outstanding job at what needed to be done. Thank you Visiting Angles for your assistance in getting dad back on his feet."

"After getting out of the hospital my mother needed someone to stay with her while I was working. The caregiver we received was amazing. She made sure that she continued my mother's physical therapy when the therapist wasn't there. She prepared healthy meals and helped get my mother's diabetes under control. Now she is no longer taking medication for it! She went over and above and I appreciate everything Home Care Assistance has done for us. "

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Carrollton:
| Resource | Contact | Address | Service |
|---|---|---|---|
| North Central Texas Area Agency on Aging | (800) 272-3921 | Centerpoint II, 616 Six Flags Drive, Arlington, TX 76011 | The Agency on Aging administers many different programs to help Dallas area seniors retain their independence. Educational seminars that relate to the interests of the elderly are scheduled throughout the month, touching on topics such as long-term care planning, nutrition and meal preparation, health care, and financial planning. Agents of the AAA also help seniors locate government benefits and apply for Medicaid, Supplemental Medicaid, and Social Security. Other functions of the AAA include helping fund senior citizens centers in the Carrollton area. |
| Denton County Transportation Authority | (940) 243-0077 | 1955 Lakeway Drive Ste. 260, Lewisville, TX 75057 | Carrollton residents, as part of Denton County, may use this public bus system, which also has handicapped shuttles. Routes run through the county and have stops at DART stations, the Dallas Area Regional Transit light rail and bus route system. Senior citizens may apply for reduced fare bus passes for both transit systems. |
| VNA Texas Meals on Wheels | (214) 689-2639 | 1440 W Mockingbird Ln, Dallas, TX 75247 | The Meals on Wheels program of the greater Dallas area provides a hot lunch Monday through Friday to area seniors who are unable to leave their homes or prepare their own nutritious meals. Volunteers provide brief companionship and check-ins plus prepared meals on Fridays for over the weekend. Other functions of this agency include educating seniors about how to prepare healthy meals and shop on a budget. |
| DFW DME Exchange of Dallas Inc. | (214) 997-3639 | 12015 Shiloh Road, Suite 130, Dallas, TX 75228 | The DME is a loan closet providing durable medical equipment to seniors in need. Items include mobility aids, such as walkers, canes and manual wheelchairs, TTY kits, blood pressure cuffs, and showering and toileting chairs. The items are donated by members of the community, so some things may not be available all the time. Also, to receive equipment, applicants must have a prescription from their physician demonstrating their need and prove that they’re uninsured or under-insured. |
| Carrollton Senior Center | (972) 466-4850 | 1720 Keller Springs Road, Carrollton, TX 75006 | The Carrollton Senior Center is a place for area residents 55 and older to gather for games and bingo tournaments, participate in a group fitness class, attend an educational lecture or join in a hobby group. Luncheons are served during the week, and the Center organizes group trips into the DFW area and holiday celebrations and socials throughout the year. |
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
