Fresno is surrounded by 1.88 million acres of prime farmland in the San Joaquin Valley. It’s within a 90-minute drive of three national parks and has a cost of living that’s 2.6% lower than the national average, which is ideal for seniors looking for affordability and beautiful scenery. The city’s diverse arts and culture scenes have something for everyone whether its Shakespeare, live events or the abundance of museums. With a population of more than 531,000, 10.9% of whom are 65 years or older, Fresno is California’s fifth-largest city.

There are many home health care programs serving the community’s older residents. The Genworth Cost of Care Survey 2019 found that the average cost of homemaker services was higher than the national average of $4,290 at $4,862, while home health aide services, at $4,862, were also higher than the national average of $4,385. Fresno seniors can take advantage of health care services provided by Community Medical Centers, a nonprofit that operates four hospitals, a cancer institute and several long-term care and outpatient facilities across the city.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Fresno area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Fresno Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Fresno:

Habitat for Humanity

Address: 4991 E. McKinley Ave., Suite 123, Fresno, CA 93727
Phone Number: (559) 237-4102

This nonprofit service uses the skills of volunteer construction and home repair workers to assists seniors in and around Fresno. It offers low-cost solutions for homeowners whose properties need general repairs, such as fixing broken rails and ramps, defective HVAC systems or damaged roofs. Additionally, Habitat for Humanity offers affordable construction services for those who need to make their homes more accessible. Seniors can also apply for sponsored and nonsponsored support through the program.

Fresno EOC Energy Services Program

Address: 1900 Mariposa St., Suite 260, Fresno, CA 93721
Phone Number: (559) 263-1588

The California Weatherization Assistance Program is available to homeowners and renters whose annual household income before taxes is less than 60% of the state median. For example, a two-person household would need an income of $36,044 or less before taxes to qualify. The program’s services include insulating exterior walls, ceilings and roofs, replacing refrigerators and cooling systems and sealing gaps in the home’s doors and windows.

Home Delivery Meals

Address: 1900 Mariposa St., Suite 260, Fresno, CA 93721
Phone Number: (559) 263-1588

Seniors in Fresno can take advantage of the Fresno Economic Opportunities Commission’s meal delivery services. There are two plans to choose from: the basic plan supplies one main meal every day for $32 per week, and the basic-plus option provides a main meal and a breakfast every day for $48 per week. All food is freshly prepared and delivered in divided trays. Menu items include three-cheese ravioli, mixed vegetables and muffins.

Homeowners’ Property Tax Exemption

Address: Hall of Records, 2281 Tulare St., Room 201, Fresno, CA 93721
Phone Number: (559) 600-3534

Homeowners can apply for an exemption on their property tax if it’s their main residence and isn’t a rental, vacation or second home. Applicants who qualify get a reduction of $7,000 on the value of their homes, which generates an approximate savings of $70 a year on their tax bills.

Low-income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

Address: 1371 Stanislaus St., Fresno, CA 93706
Phone Number: (559) 263-8300

Qualifying residents can receive one payment per program per year from LIHEAP, a federally funded program designed to help low-income households with their energy bills. For example, a home with two occupants whose combined monthly income is $3,003.67 or less could qualify. Other factors can influence the assessors’ decision, so it’s worth contacting the Fresno Economic Opportunities Commission to determine eligibility.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
