No, there is currently no national requirement that residents of assisted living communities wear face masks. However, the CDC recommends that any resident who must leave the community wear a facemask for the duration of their outing. Additionally, all staff should wear a face covering at all times. Some states may have regulations in place requiring all people in the community to wear masks, though this will vary.

Regardless of the regulations, communities should be encouraging residents to:

  • Wash their hands regularly, especially before and after eating or leaving their private room
  • Wear a face-covering anytime they leave their apartment or cottage
  • Remain six feet away from all other residents when in the hallways or other communal areas of the community, though many communities have temporarily closed all communal areas
