I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

If I could give this facility 1 star I would. My daughter was placed here following a hospital stay for pneumonia and copd. She required the constant use of a Bi-pap machine to remove carbon dioxide from her lungs as her lungs were severely damaged. The facility was contacted by Gloucester Walter Reed Hospital and everything was supposed to be delivered and set up. The nursing staff was supposed to be trained on how to turn on/off the machine and put on/off the head mask. She was there for less than 24 hours. The staff did not connect her to the Bi-pap machine at bedtime and told her it was not working properly. When she told them she had to have it on they said she would be fine until tomorrow morning when they would call in a repair technician. At 10:30 am. I arrived to find my daughter in severe distress. A nebulizer mask was discarded on the floor and the machine was buzzing loudly. No staff was in the room. She was sitting on the bed panting. I asked if she wanted me w put on the Bi-pap mask. I was then told that she had not worn it all night. I immediately went to find the nurse in charge to get the problem resolved. The charge nurse refused to talk to me because I was not on my daughters contact list. She would not come to my daughter’s room for consent to talk to me either. I asked her to call my daughter’s husband but she refused saying she’d already told him she had no time to talk to him. I went back to my daughters room and she was in worsening condition. She told me. Mama I think I am going to die. Please call 911 for me. So I did it. The ambulance came very fast and they were very helpful they listened to me and understood what I needed for my daughter. They had to lift her onto the stretcher and then took her quickly to Riverside Regional Hospital. When they were in the room not one nursing home staff member came in to see why an ambulance was there. As they left with her no one was asked where they were going with her. When I cleared out her personal belongings no one stopped me on my way out no one asked a single question. I pasted the rude charge nurse at the desk. She was on the phone. I said to her as I passed her. My daughter is leaving this place she will not return. She did not reply to me. She did however say into the phone “excuse me someone was talking I couldn’t hear you “ My daughter was admitted to the hospital and her carbon dioxide level was at coma levels. It took several days for it to stabilize. She was in and out of consciousness sometimes she knew who we were and sometimes she didn’t. It’s been a long time now but she is slowly getting stronger. We opted to take her home rather than place her in another nursing facility at her release from the hospital. We can give her better care because we love her I wouldn’t place a dog in this facility. I wouldn’t place a dog I didn’t like in this facility! I wish I could give it zero stars

THIS FACILITY IS EXTREMELY POOR TO THEIR PATIENTS!!! My grandma was taken here and told she was going to get the most up right and top care that they could provide for her and, THEY FAILED MISERABLY!!! She was 68 years old and could have lived a longer life if this facility didn’t fail to do their jobs CORRECTLY. I highly disagree to take any of your family members here for care because you will be let down. My grandma was a beautiful person and this place took that from my family and I, so this facility deserves to be shut down and all the CNA’S need their jobs taken away. I’m TRULY convinced that if this situation happened to ANYONE in this facility they would BEND OVER BACKWARDS to make share that their mom, father, grandmother OR WHATEVER FAMILY MEMEBR IT WOULD be they’d make sure that they were given the best care that could be provided. I’m terribly disappointed with this place and I can’t BELIEVE WHAT YOU GUYS DID TO MY GRANDMOTHER!!!

I am/was a resident of this facility

On December 3, 2018 I was forced out of nursing home against my will and without a 30-day notice, so the nursing home can pass their state inspection and after they passed they was told by corporate to let me come back in with open arms and nothing is being done about it and I wanted to compensate for what they did to me.

My mom stayed at Newport News Nursing & Rehab. The facility was open and airy. The bathrooms had old tiles, but they cleaned it the best they could. The staff was great and if we had questions or needed assistance, they were there to help. They had a therapist who came to my mom's room and played games with the people in a large room. They did movie nights, TV programs, and dancing, so that was great.

My mother was in Newport News Nursing & Rehab. We were very pleased with it. The staff, location, food, and upkeep were very good. They had different activities for them to do.

My dad was there for a couple of weeks. What a dump !!! It looked like they used a time machine to go dumpster diving for their equipment. We brought him food everyday so he would have something worth eating. I thought the staff at least made an effort, but they where too far outnumbered by the patients.

Newport News was referred by the hospital my dad was at. The staff is caring -- overworked though. There seemed to be a lot more patients than the nurses. But as far as cleanliness, it is clean. The food is like hospital food, but dad is eating it so it can’t be too horrible. Currently, he has a roommate, so it’s a double room that makes it small, but there is an open social area where he can be for the majority of the day, which makes that part better. There is a small dining room where some of the patients eat. They do have bingo two to three times a week, bible studies, and small groups with different games. It has been a positive experience. He is well taken-care of. The security is awesome. All the patients have an anklet so that if the door opens, there is an alarm that goes off, which is important with them because he has dementia. There is no way for him to go out. Nurses know who's family or somebody in their list, so they keep an eye out for the patient.

I would not let my DOG stay in this place! The nurses don't care about the patients! Every time I visit he scrapes his plate likes he's starving to death! We come everyday and all they are concerned with is collecting a check! They get mad when you push the call button and never seem to be able to answer basic questions. Why are you a nurse if you don't want to help the patients? To make matters worse we bring clothes in for him & they steal the clothes! We come in & hes in a hospital gown and of course no one knows where they went. Final straw someone stole his teeth! Really????!! Don't even thinking about going to this place! No one deserve to work all their life and have to come to a place like this!

I am/was a resident of this facility

I've had some post-surgery rehab and I stayed at Newport News Nursing and Rehab. It cost a lot and I'm still paying for it -- I was there two years ago. The facility is okay and the food was pretty good. They abandoned the building I was in. The Virginia Health Services runs it and couple of others around town. The facility has small apartments, basically one room facilities. It is suitable for permanent residents. It is an assisted living facility, but they may have an independent living arrangements, too. I was in the room recovering from hip surgery and it was dreary. The one thing I found to be top notch was their physical rehabilitation facility, staff, equipment, and treatment -- that's what this place is for. It's not for permanent or even semi-permanent living.

My dad stayed at Newport News Nursing & Rehab for about eight weeks for rehabilitation. The care they gave was good and we had no complaints. The food was like a typical hospital food. Overall, the facility was average.

It has been 7 months since my mother passed away. She was at this facility when she died. My anger has subsided, so I feel now is a good time to write a review of this facility. During the time my mother was in this place she was not treated well. The nurses were rarely seen and when my mother needed medication or changing or had to use the bathroom, my family members had to find a nurse. We were the ones that kept her on-schedule, not this facility. When we complained to the administration, we were given lip-service with no results. It took an act of God to get her any assistance at all, and if it were not for my family members tending to Mom, she would have suffered even more than she did. This is a place for the forgotten, those people that are thrown away in society and those people that are not loved. If you love your family member, DO NOT place them here. I greatly regret Mom being in this nursing home and my only comfort is that she is now in Heaven and she knows if I could do it all over again, I would have found another solution. Places like this should be shut down.

Stay away from this place. My Mom was here for 7 days before she died. I never thought such callus and abusive individuals could work in the nursing profession. Mom had bed sores after 4 days. We hired outside sitters to sit with Mom overnight to protect her from the nurses. The nurses were uncaring, and some had serious personality disorders. Debbie told my kid sister that my Mom was not really dying, if we would just give her an IV, she would be fine and up and about in a week. She deliberately withheld pain meds, because she didn't like "ME", and was rude and abusive to my sister and my Mom's memory, when my Mom died. We had to threaten her with publicity and the police twice, just to get her disagreeable self out of the room when my Mom died. Other nurses were confrontational...like they had some sort of power over us. The only good thing about that nursing home is that now my Mom is dead, and out of there. I feel seriously sorry for any patient still there.
