"Visiting Angels of Princess Anne is very good. It's my best friend that they're caring for. The people that come out always look so nice. They're very courteous and clean. They enable my best friend to get out and about for errands. They even took her to lunch the other day because she was meeting me for lunch, so they were able to bring her. They help with bathing, and she always looks so nice. She has a difficult time getting around, so they assist her in and out of the shower making sure that she's safe. Afterwards, she is always dressed to the nines. She's a very sharp dresser. They always make sure she looks wonderful like she always has. They were highly recommended. It's wonderful that they include her daughter in on the billing. They send a copy to her daughter, which is a very nice service. It's very prompt. I don't think she's ever had any problems with their scheduling. They're very accessible and very reachable. They're safe, comforting, and professional. It enables family members to have quality care with their loved ones."

"I used Cherished Home Services LLC and the woman I had coming in was really nice. I was kind of surprised the first time I met her and she got along great with us. Whatever I asked her to do, she was more than willing to do it, and kept the apartment clean and did my laundry. It was a great experience. I enjoyed it. We had her two times a week, and she was right on time every day. She also made it understood that if I needed to reschedule, I could just give them a call and they'd be more than happy to reschedule."

"Comfort Keepers is working with me for my husband for at least 6 months now. The caregivers are excellent. They are caring, and they work hard. They do the dishes, they sweep, they make my husband's bed, they help him to the bathroom, they help him back in his chair and out of his chair, and if I need it, they also help him to shower. We have hospice coming in, so they're in addition to hospice. The VA pays for it. They keep in touch with you and they will let you know of any changes. They also work with you on your hours. If people are sick or on vacation, they try their hardest to get someone in there."

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Virginia Beach:
| Resource | Contact | Address | Service |
|---|---|---|---|
| I-Ride Transit | (757) 222-4513 | SSSV Transportation Department, Interstate Corporate Center 6350 Center Drive, Building 5, Suite 101, Norfolk, VA 23502 | Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia provides this inexpensive transportation option for seniors in Portsmouth, Norfolk, Chesapeake and Virginia Beach. Fares are as low as $1 on fixed routes, and transportation to the Western Tidewater Free Clinic in Suffolk is available three days a week. Seniors 60 years and older and anyone who is disabled can schedule a ride to see their doctor, and the suggested $4 payment is voluntary. |
| Virginia Office of Aging Services | (800) 522-3402 | 1610 Forest Avenue, Suite 100, Henrico, Virginia 23229 | This state organization helps seniors remain independent and healthy. Here are some of the free services they sponsor: |
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
