Independent Living Reviews for Arbour Square of Harleysville

November 01, 2017

By Steve Z.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother has been living at Arbour Square for a little over two years after moving up from Florida with my father in the summer of 2015. She likes to stay active and there is plenty of things to do for all of her interests. The staff is over the top friendly and committed to providing the utmost of care. There is great attention to detail and they take the time to know who you are and couldn’t be any more accommodating. My mother always tells me that “she has no complaints about living here” and has made many friends in the process. Since my father passed away last year I feel that it was not only her family but the staff and friends she met at Arbour Square helped her through a very difficult time. I feel that she is in excellent hands at this first class independent living community because the residents always come first. Arbour Square exceeds a 5 star rating.

Arbour Square of Harleysville was really nice. The room was spacious with a lot of light, and not too big, but certainly not too small. They had several areas where you could have group meetings and a lot of activities both on the premises and off the premises. It was definitely senior living with a whole building of independent people who didn't need any assistance at all and that's what I like. They had a lot of things geared toward that.

Arbour Square of Harleysville was very good. We chose it because it's very well-run and very organized, and there are lots of the facilities. Price-wise, it wasn't the cheapest, but it seemed reasonable. The girl I dealt with was very good. My parents are going to be in a 1-bedroom.

In Arbour Square of Harleysville, you would be renting an apartment every month, and if you needed further care, you would not get it there. It was a beautiful community. They had different dining areas there, and they all looked beautiful. You could get what you wanted, and I thought they provided one meal, but you could get more if you wanted. You could order what you wanted and just pay for it. The staff was very nice. They had different activities there, and you could join in if you wanted. They had something for the people to do so that they would not be in their apartments by themselves.

Provider Response

Thanks so much for visiting Arbour Square and giving us a 5-Star Rating! We are thrilled that you liked everything that you saw ~ from the employees, to the environment and activities. I wanted to clarify your comment about the ability to receive further care. While Arbour Square is an independent living community, we are proud of the continuum of care that we offer that allows residents to ‘age in place.’ For example, there is on-site therapy services that provide physical, occupational and speech therapy as well as an active wellness program. Local physicians, podiatrists, audiologists, etc. visit weekly and offer a convenient way for residents to see doctors as needed. Most importantly, we partner with medical home health and non-medical home care agencies to assist residents with activities of daily living as needed.

When regular apartment living wasn't working for our mom, we became very concerned. We weren't sure where to turn. She was getting older but we wanted her to have a full life with friends and activities. To make things easier for her, we knew she needed other services as well. After a lengthy search we found Arbor Square. From our first visit, we were so impressed! The apartment was so nice! The entire facility is so beautiful and so clean! The common areas are so well decorated and so welcoming. Our choice became clear. It's been over two years now and time is flying by. We cannot get over how much better our mom is in so many aspects of the quality of her life. She is going to rehab and is walking and getting around so much better. She enjoys dining with her friends and the food is wonderful. Having doctors on site is incredibly convenient and the doctors are caring and attentive ! And the parties and activities keep things exciting every day. We could not imagine a better solution for mom at this stage of her life. We enjoy visiting her. We are so grateful to the entire staff that do such an amazing job in making Arbor Square a wonderful place to spend the golden years of your life. Keep up the great work!

Arbour Square was wonderful; it was absolutely gorgeous. I think my mother would have been happy there, but it was too far from where she was currently living. It was relatively new, the amenities were great, and I think they have more independent living residents in the place I went to. They had a bank, a post office, several eating areas, and a movie room. I would highly recommend it on appearance.

My parents moved into the Hillside at Arbour Square last month and it's been so nice knowing they are in a clean and safe environment. The staff is so nice and friendly and welcoming and they check on my parents all the time. It's a bright and airy place that I love to visit and the coffee is very good. Parking is excellent.Physical therapy is run by the best. Arbour Square is very user friendly and a great location in the community.

Arbour Square is top notch!! My father lived independently at Arbour Square for 1 year and just recently we had to move him to a Skilled Nursing facility. Nothing can compare to Arbour Square. Its run very personal and professional and the staff is extremely caring and knowledgeable. Always around to answer any questions which may arise. Do not think twice about moving a loved one to Arbour Square. Just do it!!

Thank you to all the staff at Arbor Square. My mom LOVES living there and her 5 adult children love that she is there! She moved in about 6 months ago and the experience has been only 100% positive. Everyone is a consummate professional and every single person - from the Director down to each and every support staff shows true caring for all the residents. Thank you for such a friendly, clean and supportive environment. The activities are endless but so is the simple life of peace and quiet. There seems to be something for everyone at Arbor Square!

We moved my parents to Arbour Square three years ago. It has been a wonderful experience. There is a great mix of residents which makes it such a neat community. My parents particularly enjoyed the music programs that were just one part of the daily activity schedule. The staff makes the biggest difference--very responsive, professional, and caring. The Campus Executive Director Mimi is super visible leading a great team and her leadership is extremely genuine....she knows every single resident on a first name basis. A special shout out also is due to Dave and John who do a terrific job with the culinary program...the food and service show how much they go out of their way to insure that all of the residents feel welcome and comfortable in the dining room, When we lost our mother last year, Mimi's team made it so seamless to move my father to a more suitable unit...they have so many options. We had to move our dad to the adjacent Birches very recently and, again, the Arbour team made this transition as easy as possible. Our family would recommend Arbour Square to any other family with such needs.

I liked that Arbor Square of Harleysville had a fantastic physical fitness program. The rooms were larger than the other places that I looked at. It had two meals a day, a lot of planned activities, all kinds of classes, and machines that they had were akin to a hospital physical therapy. They had lunches outside and sign-ups for trips. They had a washer and dryer in the units. They would provide transportation to all medical appointments. The staff was very informative and knew the residents, which was very important.

Arbour Square of Harleysville has what they call Main Street in the building. It is like a corridor with stores, a bank, a beauty salon, and an old 1960s-style milkshake stand. There is a nice dining facility. Upstairs, there is a library, a movie theater, and all sorts of activities. There are four in-house chefs, and they change the menu completely every eight weeks. You go up to a buffet line to get your food. If you're in a wheelchair, they have personnel there who will take your tray to your table. They take your wheelchair out into the hallway, too. The units could be a little bigger. This is an independent living facility. Right across the parking lot, they have a building for assisted living.

We went to Arbour Square of Harleysville. We looked at the bedroom with two closets, and one closet was completely occupied by the air-conditioning unit. The facility was very nice, and the people seemed to be happy. However, the two-bedroom units were at the corners of the building, so you’d be walking for miles. We noticed that there were lots of activities listed. They seemed to have a very full social schedule. There were living rooms that they had set aside where people could meet and gather, but nobody was in them. The girl who showed us around was very nice. The residents we did see in the main area seemed very happy. However, my husband and I have difficulty walking. I had to push him in a wheelchairs for two hours there, so the place is not exactly what we are looking for.

For the amount of money that is charged for the meals the food should not be of such low quality. More often than not the food is overlooked, the pasta is like mush from being cooked to long, the meat is tough and as a last resort the salad bar is what is eaten for dinner. At a recent Sunday brunch the majority of the food were sweets and the residents were served a meatball sub for dinner. I would not say that they are in any way getting their monies worth when it comes to the dining. Complaints go unresolved time after time.

Provider Response

We are sorry that you have not been happy with the Dining Service at Arbour Square. Your loved one’s satisfaction with the dining experience is very important to us. If you are not aware, we have several systems in place for residents and family members to provide feedback regarding meals. 1. Our Chef and Executive Director are in the Garden Terrace Dining Room daily, please make sure to see them when you are not satisfied with a meal. 2. There are comment cards on the buffet tables that go directly to the Chef in case you or your loved one doesn’t want to talk to someone directly. 3. There are also Monthly Chat with the Chef and Monthly Resident Town Hall meetings that are conducted by the Executive Director where any resident can voice a concern on any topic. Resident and Family feedback is always welcomed. Our goal is to provide delicious and healthy meals ~ and for residents to truly enjoy the dining experience at Arbour Square.

My parents liked that there's no down payment at Arbour Square of Harleysville. Basically, it's affordable, and it seems very nice. We talked to a lot of the residents and got nothing but positive feedback. They have bingo, card games, music, concerts, and a movie theater, and they have bus trips. We had eaten there, and it was good. The staff was very nice. From what I've seen so far, I would recommend them.

My mother passed away Two years ago, and my sister and I were faced with the emotional task of finding the perfect place for Dad without compromising his independence or physical well being. My sister and I struggled to find the perfect place, so He would feel comfortable moving out of his Three Story Townhouse into a one bedroom apartment. Our Father still drives, and has always been extremely social, but ever since our Mom passed away from a long burden with Alzheimer's and Dementia we noticed a decline in his appetite and mental well being. He was starting to fall into a depression. After finally acquiring the long awaited acceptance and permission from him to tour some Independent Living Facilities. My Dad picked Arbour Square in Harleysville, PA. Ever since that day that he signed his papers and the moving company moved him into his one bedroom, he has NEVER been happier. The facility and staff are amazing, I cannot express how extremely clean, and wonderful the campus is. Arbour Square offers so many social events, that my father has reconnected with his love of making new friends and even enjoys yoga, circuit training and line dancing!! We are so pleased and blessed to have found Arbour Square. Sincerely, The Swalm Family

The Arbour Square was much more independent. The staff seemed to be accommodating. It was a very different place. It was huge. It was really large, like a large complex. It was more upscale. The woman that took us around was very helpful, very personable, and very informative. I don't think she left any stone unturned. She took us on a tour of the whole place, and it was very nice. The rooms were a little more spacious, but they were more expensive. There was a lot of postings for activities that people could sign up for or trips that they could take whether it be shopping or a flower show. There were a number of things that people could sign up for. The dining area was very large and very pretty. They also had a smaller area where they serve breakfast that looked like a cafe, and it was also very nice. I didn't see any security. There wasn't anyone to greet at the door other than the person that was waiting for us for the appointment. She was there, but there was no formal desk girl or a place to check in. It was new and very pretty.

My father didn't want to move but we were watching him decline rapidly. Arbour Square was very understanding and worked with us to ensure a smooth transition. By the end of the first week, a man who was simply surviving was now living. It has been 2 months and he is so happy shooting pool, playing bingo and poker and even singing. All the things he would never do before. The hardest decision our family ever made turned out to be the best thing for our dad. He has a happy and full life -- thanks to Arbour Square.

My friend who is a resident of one month is satisfied with everything except the meals. Her dinner is NEVER hot. Even when she sends her plate to the kitchen to be heated in the microwave it is still luke warm. Given the amount of money the residents pay their meals should be hot.

Provider Response

We agree with you completely! Thanks so much for taking the time to review Arbour Square. Your friend's satisfaction with her dining experience is very important to us. Our goal is to provide hot, delicious and healthy meals and we want the opportunity to make your friend 100% satisfied.

Arbour Square does monitor the food temperature before and during every meal. However, if there is a problem, we would like the opportunity to correct it. Please ask her to reach out to the Executive Director or Chef (Director of Dining Services) to resolve.

And a big THANK YOU to the staff for their loving care of my father.

I am writing to let you know that my Mother and her husband moved in the Hillsides at Arbour Square two weeks ago. Tonight I went to see them and seem so happy. Every day is adventure with activities, meeting new neighbors and enjoying the meals. Our family has already enjoyed the pub area for a family brunch catered by Dave and his staff and have secured a date for out family Christmas. Mimi and all of the staff have gone out of their way to make the entire family feel welcome, everything we have asked for has been promptly completed. No request went unanswered, nothing was too much trouble. I work in the skilled nursing industry and I know you probably only hear many complaints, this is not always an easy population to please, so I wanted to make sure you knew what a great product you have and how the staff really makes it special. The only thing I have to say is on the back side of the building, where my parents park, the ramp onto the sidewalk is too far for them to walk. It would be great if a center ramp could be installed. Again thank you and to your staff.

Arbour Square is great! It is fancy. Everything is perfect there. They have apartments and there are three rooms. At the Arbour Square, you don't really have a staff; you live in your own apartment. There is a desk downstairs and the kitchen and all, but nobody takes care of you or anything there. The people who live in Arbour Square do not ever see the people from their assisted living part unless they go over to visit. The location is great! It has a swimming pool and a YMCA and Walmart next door. It is great for people. It had everything you could think of. It had a cafeteria, a post office, a gymnasium, a bar room where they could get together, and they hold classes for them. This place is high class. When I have to go to somewhere, that's where I'm going. It is that nice.

We had a very lovely tour at Arbour Square. It was very convenient. There was free food, which was very good. They also had entertainment and activities. However, its cost compared to living at our own home is just really prohibited. Also we don't have health issues, so it doesn't seem necessary at this point. The rooms were really lovely, though. Also, I thought the amenities, the shopping possibilities, as well as the dining facilities there, were really very pleasant.

Arbour Square was clean. I didn't get an institution feel and it just seemed to lack too many things. The room sizes were okay although the kitchen was little. I didn't care for the kitchen since I still like to cook a lot and spend most of my time in the kitchen. It was a semi-kitchen. I bake, I cook and I have a lot of equipment. I, unfortunately, still would like to have some cabinets and room to store my things and keep them. They're building a new wing and that lacked a nice little fridge that we're looking for.

Provider Response

Thanks so much for taking the time to review Arbour Square! We describe the kitchens as ‘galley-kitchens’ because they are small, but designed to be functional for residents who still want to be able to do some light cooking and baking. Since we provide lunch and dinner daily, most of our residents are happy to find new, engaging activities that get them OUT of the kitchen! Please consider coming back to see The Hillside when it is completed in early 2014.

My father resided at Arbour Square for the last 6 years and during that time he met many new friends that he enjoyed playing pool and cards with and just sharing good times together. The management of Arbour Square could not have been nicer to him. I found Arbour Square when I was looking for a new home for my mother and father several years ago. They were not very happy about leaving their home after 50 years. Arbour Square was the nicest one that we toured through, especially because there was no "buy in" needed. The entire staff is wonderful and they speak to each resident by their first name. My mother is now living there after the passing of my father and everyone has been so helpful in this transition. She has grown to be very comfortable and happy in her daily surroundings which she says are beautiful. She has made new friends and enjoys sitting together at dinners and listening to music. She is very happy. Thank goodness for Arbour Square!

My parents moved in a little over a year ago and are settling in quite nicely. At first the transition was difficult for them but the staff and other residents provided a welcome environment. The rooms are lovely and the location is quite pretty and quiet. Although it is in a country setting, there is lots to do in the area and Arbour Sq. provides a bus for excursions. My parents have begun to make friends there and the two meals a day they receive are perfect- they love having breakfast at home and often go out. Most importantly, I feel they are in good hands and that someone who 'cares' is always nearby in case they need them. Thank you.

My mother and father have been residents at Arbour Square for over four years. In that time, I have come to know the management staff quite well. I can't count the number of times they have gone above and beyond their duties not only for my parents but also for their children who live out of state. Their kindness and caring is genuine and the Arbour Square atmosphere is one of friendship and relaxation. There are extensive amenities and a wide variety of activities that benefit everyone no matter what their ages or levels of fitness. It truly has been a perfect fit for Mom and Dad in their latter years.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Arbour Square in Harleysville. My mother has been a resident there for six months. The entire staff, from the Executive Director Mimi K., to the maintenance staff are all so great. They are caring, concerned, and efficient in running the facility. My mother needed extensive physical therapy when she moved in, and the onsite therapy staff were responsible for her amazing recovery after a rough time medically and physically. They were amazing! Beautiful facility which is set up like a little towne square. I was very impressed in each of my visits with the feel of community. The staff is warm and efficient, always on the lookout for the well being of their residents. On one of my vists, on a very cold winter day where most people seemed to be hybernating, I was impressed to see a Staff Adminstrator's reaction to a resident who was sitting alone, seeming a little lost (or lonely) in the common area (which looks like a little cafe). She poured a hot chocolate for each of them, and took the time from her busy schedule to sit and just chat. It was clear how that little gesture made such a huge im pact on the resident's morning! The caregivers always seem to be on the ball. You don't just hear silence as a resident is being assisted in some way....genuine concern is showed and conversations from the teasing to the very serious can be heard at every turn. It was a heartwarming feeling the day I saw a resident sitting in a common area with an aide who was giving her a mini lesson on the use of an I-POD! Absolutely adorable to see. The place is pretty, the staff is warm, and it seems the residents are more than happy to call this home.

    About Arbour Square of Harleysville

All of these amenities are here for you to use at your leisure for one affordable, monthly payment.

Arbour Square of Harleysville celebrated its Grand Opening in 2006. As an Independent Living community, Arbour Square offered a new option for seniors in Montgomery County – a rental community with no long-term lease or entrance fee. A total of 150 apartments with a quaint Main Street, various activity and gathering areas, and multiple dining venues were quickly filled with seniors eager for an easier, but active lifestyle. In 2014, Arbour Square expanded and added an additional 125 apartments and another 125,260 square feet of living area. Amenities include a fitness area, library, movie theater, sports bar, art studio, woodworking shop and more!

Residents of Arbour Square can also take advantage of the variety of activities located in and around the Harleysville area. Within a nine-mile radius, there are four wineries and vineyards, six scenic golf courses including two which offer miniature golf and a driving range for family fun. The Movie Tavern and The Grand Theatre are great choices for rainy days. The Elmwood Park Zoo and the Alpaca Farm are local favorites. Seasonal festivals include the Country Fairs Days in late May and the annual Apple Butter Frolic in early September. The Dutch Country Playhouse, The Sellersville Theatre, and the Montgomery Theatre offer performing arts lovers an array of entertainment throughout the year.
