The Best Independent Living Communities in Montgomery County, PA

"Sunrise of Abington was very nice, that place was beautiful. The residents can cook their own food there but they also have a dining room where they can prepare the meals if the residents want to. They have medical on-site, I think that's where the price goes up, because it has all that. It's one of the best ones that I saw though. It has the assisted living and independent. It's very good, you'll be satisfied. They also have apartments where they have a full stove and a big refrigerator. Most of the other assisted living places only have microwaves. The staff was very nice and very professional. The place was very clean and smelled very fresh."

"We looked at Wesley Enhanced Living. The apartments were beautiful, the furnishings and accommodations were nice, and they had planned trips and scheduled activities. The dining area was nice, with big windows."

"I visited Paradise Manor. They were very accommodating and very knowledgeable. The place was clean. It seemed to have everything there that was needed, and it's close to where I live. I believe it's like $1,500 a month. I didn't see many activities. I basically just saw the amenities. It's more of a studio-type environment."

"I went to The Philadelphia Protestant Home. I was there to visit them about a possible respite stay for my mother during the holidays. It was a lovely facility, what I saw. But because my mother needs a memory care unit, and they did not have respite stay for memory care. It was a lovely facility, what I saw, but I did not visit the memory care. I was able to tour the independent living and assisted living. I would give the staff a 4 because I had to do a lot of follow-up with her. Like she would tell me this would happen, she was going to set up an appointment with the director of nursing, so that's why I gave her 4 because she was good, she showed me around, but as far as follow through, I think the follow through could have been better. I did not try the food, but I did see the different restaurants and the dining halls. They were excellent. I would feel comfortable putting my mother there if they had the services that she needed. The people I saw were engaged. They were high functioning. Most of the people that I saw were independent."

"We toured Arbour Square of Harleysville. It's a very nice community, and I'm still considering it. The people seemed very nice, and the facilities were nice. I was looking for independent living. They have an indoor swimming pool, they have exercises there, and an exercise room. The sales person was excellent and very helpful."

"Brittany Manor didn't provide respite care services. Going in there, it was more for people who are mentally challenged. Before I went in, there was a resident already asking me for money while I was sitting in my car, and then when I went in, there was another resident who was asking me for money, and food, and whatever I had in my hand. The person who walked me around was a five. My experience trying to confirm that I had a tour was a one or a zero. I called to confirm, and no one seemed to be able to confirm with me that they were aware that I was coming. They said they would get back to me, and no one ever got back to me, so I just wound up showing up, and the person who gave me the tour was very friendly. However, she wasn't necessarily prepared to provide a tour. The place was very disheveled. Whoever owned the place before, that signage was still up there. The facility smelled as soon as I got in the door. The staff pretty much mentioned this is for people who have mental disabilities. The room I saw wasn't dirty. It's just that everything looked old. Everything didn't look like it was maintained properly. That's not a place I would recommend for anybody. It didn't seem like the patients were even well taken care of. The people that I talked to on the phone were not professional in my book, and telling me that you're going to get back to me, and then you still don't get back, that was very concerning."

"I toured Fountain View at Logan Square. The community was beautiful. My brother loved it. We loved the atmosphere, the restaurants, the library, the entrance, and how well they treated us when we came there. Even the guy that gave us the tour guide was wonderful. The nurse who came and did his assessment was very pleasant and very kind. However, we were not able to afford it. I thought that we would be able to get the room because I was going to financially help him. However, the money had to be in his account, so he was denied because he didn't have enough income coming in. The staff was wonderful with the tour, but when he set us up for the medical doctor, he gave the impression that my brother could get the studio because it was cheaper, and then by the time we came back, he told me the studio was $4,600. The upkeep was very nice, except they were still under construction, so it was a little messy. However, the rooms I saw that were already ready were very nice."

"I toured Echo Lake, and it was worth a six. It was like being in a luxury hotel. It was gorgeous. Everything that you can imagine they have, except for the chapel. They have doctors' offices. They have a gym. They had a huge art room, and a bus to take you places, like a weekly run to the supermarket, within a certain distance. Also, to doctor's offices if you didn't want to use the doctor that was there at the building. It's a couple of stories high. It was huge. For me it was expensive. They had a lot of two-bedroom units there as well."

"Twining Village is a very nice facility. The staff were pretty nice. We had our aunt in there and it was good for her because they allowed her cat to be there. She stayed there for four years. They made sure my aunt was eating dinner. They tried to get her to go to activities, but she didn't want to go. They did what they were supposed to do. I think they just need to evaluate the residents more often. "

"It is a not a new place but it's very nice and offers basically the same things as others. They have big rooms, each one with its own patio "

"I toured Oxford Enhanced Senior Living. The apartments were bright, clean, and spacious. They have a dining-cafeteria area and a library. The upkeep of the community seemed fine to me. The dining area had just been renovated. It wasn't big, but it seemed well-kept. The staff member was new, but he was very knowledgeable."

"Manatawny Manor is nice. However, my mom is very adamant about going into any kind of place. The rooms are nice and the place is clean. They did some renovations. The staff seems very helpful and very knowledgeable. There is nothing bad I can say about it."

"My mom is at Chestnut Ridge, and they have been taking care of her very well. She is in a nice room, but sometimes when I visit her there it doesn’t smell good as she is a little incontinet. As far as her medications and meals, they do stay on top of those things."

"Arbour Square at West Chester was a fantastic facility. It's brand new. It's a community of its own. It has two restaurants in the facility, a theater, and everything you need. You don't have to leave the complex. It has a general store, a bank, a salon, a barber shop, exercise facilities, and doctors and nurses that will come in and out. I liked it because it has both independent and assisted living. They have transportation and they will get you where you have to go, like to doctors' appointments. Their food was excellent. The gentleman that built this complex had parents who were handicapped and confined to wheelchairs. When he built the facility he took into consideration the elderly and handicapped people. It's first class. The staff member was excellent and very professional. The grounds and the building were immaculate. It's very well taken care of. They have good chefs and you can get a variety of meals. If you want to see shows or movies outside they'll take you, but they have their own movie theater in the facility. They'll also take you to casinos, malls, or museums. They have Bingo and card nights as well. The activities were wonderful."
