Paying for Assisted Living in Delaware County

Due to its proximity to Philadelphia, Delaware County shares the metropolitan area’s average assisted living cost of $5,550 per month. According to Genworth’s 2020 Cost of Care Survey, this is much higher than the state average of $3,955. Assisted living in Delaware County is also more expensive than the national median of $4,300.

The Cost of Assisted Living in Nearby Cities

Within Pennsylvania, Delaware County’s average cost of $5,550 makes it one of the most expensive locations for assisted living. The cost in the central city of State College is almost as high at $5,340. The Pittsburgh area is much more affordable, with an average price of $3,550 per month. The average paid in the lakeside city of Erie is significantly higher at $4,315. Assisted living in Lancaster is more affordable, with a median price of $4,050 per month. At $2,450, Scranton has the lowest price in the state. Assisted living here is less than half the cost of the Delaware County area. In Reading, the average cost for assisted living is much closer to the state median at $3,950. Near the border with New Jersey, East Stroudsburg has a much higher average at $4,875 per month.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Delaware County

Delaware County seniors who meet certain eligibility requirements for the Pennsylvania Department of Aging waiver may qualify for financial assistance in order to pay for care within one of the city’s assisted living facilities. In addition, if you receive SSI and need to live in an assisted living facility, the state can pay a supplement to the facility if you qualify.

Older adults can also get help applying for health insurance and other financial assistance programs. Evidence-based health promotion programs include fall prevention courses, diabetes and chronic pain management workshops and a walking program for seniors with arthritis.
Chester Senior Center(610) 497-3550Adults aged 50 and up can take part in activities and trips offered by this senior center. Health clinics are held here, including chiropractor visits and healthy aging classes. Members also have access to Bible study groups, art classes and book clubs. A travel club visits destinations both near and far, with trips ranging from international cruises to luncheons at the local casino. Staff can arrange low-cost transportation to the senior center from neighboring communities.
Delaware County Veterans Affairs(610) 891-4646The Delaware County Veterans Affairs department offers a discount program that can help service members save money at local retailers. Staff members also are available to help veterans fill out and submit applications for VA benefits and entitlement programs. Additionally, assistance may be available for health care services, housing and education.
Legal Aid of Southeastern PA(610) 874-8421LASP is a nonprofit law firm that provides free services to help low-income people access necessary advocacy and assistance. Its Elder Law initiative provides referrals and information on topics related to Medicare, Social Security and health care access. The organization can also help seniors create wills and care directives or deal with cases of fraud or elder abuse.
Delaware County Community Transit(610) 891-5311This county-run program offers several community-based transportation initiatives for older residents, including the Senior Shared Ride Program. This program helps adults over age 65 get around, while a paratransit service is available to seniors with special needs. The Medical Assistance Transportation Program is designed especially for those receiving Medical Assistance benefits.
