Located just east of Pittsburgh, Monroeville has 27,380 residents, and nearly one out of every four of those residents is a senior 65 years of age or older. Monroeville has much to offer those older adults, including the UPMC East medical facility. Part of the University of Pittsburgh’s health care network, UPMC East is a relatively new establishment, and its focuses include surgery, stroke and cancer care. Another option is Forbes Hospital, which offers many specialties of its own. Additionally, nearby Pittsburgh contains many other medical facilities.
For semiprivate rooms, nursing homes in Monroeville charge an average monthly rate of $9,125, per the Genworth 2020 Cost of Care Survey. That is higher than the national average of $7,756. Nursing homes tend to be the costliest senior care option in a given area; however, they also provide the most extensive care, including around-the-clock attention and supervision from licensed nurses. Not all seniors need such services, and those with more independence may find that assisted living or home health care is a more affordable and appropriate fit.
Next, this guide gives an overview of nursing home costs in Monroeville. Then, it highlights some of Monroeville’s helpful resources for seniors.

My dad was in Concordia of Monroeville. The place was laid out very nicely. It was very clean. It was over a weekend, but it just seemed like they were very understaffed. The staff that was there was very helpful. My dad didn’t say anything negative about the food, so I assumed what he had there, he liked. They did have a therapy room, but because we were there in the middle of COVID, we weren’t allowed to go through and take much of a tour of the place. They kind of bent the rules for us and allowed us to go back to my dad’s room and be there pretty much all day with him, even though their policy was one person for an hour at a time. But it just helped them out because of their staffing issues I believed, to have someone back there with my father. I know they did have a rehab center there, but beyond that, I don’t know what else they had because we couldn’t walk around to see the place. His room was big. It was nice. The people that we met were very nice. I think we liked that. My dad was very appreciative of the care that he got there.

After what my family went through because of this facility, I do not want any one else to go through this. I can not even begin to describe how terrible this place is. I had a family member in this nursing home, and if I could have took her out I would have in a heart beat. I would walk in the room to my family member hanging out of bed, in dirty clothes, with a wet diaper. This happened multiple times a week. If the patients push their emergency button, they come at their convenience no matter how bad the situation is. When my family member tried to explain to a nurse her needs, it was too much of an effort to them. They don’t talk to the patients with nice words. Many times when I came to pick up dirty clothes, they were soaked with urine or had blood on them. When I called the nurses station to check in on my family member, I would be put on hold for a good while and then got hung up on. I was also told multiple times I would receive a call back and I never did. When covid hit, it only got worse. They did not even communicate with us about how our loved ones were doing, and if we called to check in it was an inconvenience to them. They did not take the time to set up Facetime calls so we could see our family. They also did not keep the blinds open so that we could peek in the window at them. I honestly do not have enough words to describe how terrible this place treated my family member, and I hope that no one else has to go through this. Thank you.

The WILLOWS of PRESBYTERIAN SENIORCARE: the care is average. The food is horrible. Nursing care is average. The BILLING DEPT is the worst! The billing statements are extremely vague; no details, often you’re left wondering how they came up with that charge, and THEY DO NOT APPRECIATE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THEIR BILLING. They refuse to even explain or state in detail how the charge came about.
Administration in that building in particular is aweful. Mr. Zaharoff rules through politics and degradation! He demonstrates no respect for family or caregivers of the elderly living there.
The 1st floor is decorated with style for everyone to see who walks in…..that’s where they give their tours.
The 2-4th floors where long term residents live is so dirty & so outdated. I mean it has wallpaper peeling, dirty floors, stained carpets, it’s like 1970s decor. Very institutional looking.

I was very disappointed. MY father was a licensed nursing home administrator and actually helped this facility get hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding over his career. When he wanted o go to a nursing home, he and my mother always said this was the place. It was outrageously expensive at $9,000.00 per month and the quality of the facility was no better than a $3000.00 per month place my mother in law was in. It was a beautiful exterior and grounds. They crammed my dad into a make shift room that was once a storage closet. The staff were not very attentive and sometimes I would come to visit, notice his HELP light was on and go to the desk. The person at the desk would say that it must have just gone on which I never believed.

The staff is awesome and very caring/attentive. Albeit it is at the bottom of a hill, there are some semi nice views for the residents. All of the nurses seem extremely friendly and really will go out of their way to watch over and even say hello to each of the residents. From what I hear, some other residents complained about the food being the same all of the time, but my great grandparents never complained of it. There is a long monthly menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner that rotates every 30 days. Bingo and other activities were held almost every afternoon and young kids would often visit with the residents and give them gifts which I thought was one of the nicest gestures ever. There are two floors, and since they recently installed an elevator, residents on the bottom floor can go upstairs and visit a spouse or friend on the upper (more intensive) care floor.

My mother was at ManorCare in Whitehall for 3 weeks until we moved her to another facility for the lack of care and poor treatment she was receiving there. Call bells went unanswered for hours, she was not regularly washed. Although there for IV medication and severe back pain, she was coerced into aggressive physical therapy that caused her increased pain. Once, she had no dinner. Some of the nurses and most of the aides were curt, condescending and inappropriate. One nurse told her "This is not a hotel" another said "You’ll do what I tell you to do!" when she was too ill for therapy. On one occasion when I approached the nursing station for help, i was told that my mother was not his patient, and he walked away from me with no eye contact. Another time, I was told by the nurse that she just came back from vacation and was too busy to assist me until later. My family members actually feared for my mother’s safety and her health until we got her out of there.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Monroeville, PA
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
