Dayton is a bustling metropolitan city in Ohio that’s ideal for veterans due to the tax laws in the state. In addition to being an affordable area to live, there are also 29 hospitals within close range of the city center. The Dayton VA Medical Center, The Rehabilitation Institute of Ohio and Miami Valley Hospital have good reputations, with the latter coming first in the U.S. News list of hospitals in the city. Despite a relatively low cost of living in Dayton, nursing home costs are quite high.
According to Genworth’s 2020 Cost of Care Survey, the national average price of a semiprivate room in a nursing home is $7,756, whereas it’s almost $1,000 more in Dayton, at $8,699. However, older adults in nursing homes can expect around-the-clock access to skilled medical care from a registered nurse as well as help with daily activities. Seniors who don’t require 24/7 skilled care can also consider home health care or assisted living, which are cheaper and less intensive.
This guide explores the price of nursing homes in Dayton and Ohio in comparison with other types of elder care and provides some useful local resources for seniors.

Too bad you can’t leave a zero star review. My advise would be don’t leave your loved one at Stonespring. They have no pride in how their facility looks like to outsiders. If the did they wouldn’t leave trash laying on the floors of not only the residents rooms but also the hallways and the elevator. My sister did a surprise visit during therapy and a gentleman told them they were getting mom up wrong. Moms wound became infected when a compression sock was left on causing the wound to drain leaving it dirty with stains on it (I have pictures on my phone). The drainage became infected. Mom had to go to the er because she had a uti, 2 blood clots and strep A in her blood stream. The wound still did not heal causing the hardware to became infected. Which then had to be removed putting her recovery back to square one. They "misplaced" a check. Then NEVER called me to let me know that they found it. I had to check with the bank to find out what happened. Poor customer service. I am extremely frustrated and angry with the treatment my mom received. Leaving mom out in the hallway for 2 hours waiting on a transfer bus that wasn’t even coming that day. Then throwing her clothes back instead of putting them up neatly. When I asked the aide why she didn’t wonder where I was at she coped on attitude with me. We never saw her again for the rest of the time I was there.

I was a resident there following a total knee replacement for physical therapy. I can’t say enough good things about the physical therapy department!! Especially Emma!! She pushed me to my limits every day but she helped me achieve my goals so I could go home. My only complaint about this facility is the FOOD!!! It wasn’t the Cook’s fault. They did the best they could with what they had. But irregardless of that I will be returning when I get my other knee done. Loved the staff. They went above and beyond for me. Would definitely recommend if you’re needing an awesome physical therapy rehab. I had a large private room.

My brother has been a resident at Vienna Springs for 6 months. This is a beautiful new facility. He’s in a double room with a roommate. I love the fact that the room includes a large walk in bathroom with a shower. However, one side of this particular floorplan is much smaller than the other. I chose the smaller part because it’s at the door. My brother is in a wheelchair making his coming and going easier. The room comes with a phone, flat screen TV and a very nice recliner. There’s also a wardrobe and a four drawer dresser for clothing. The staff is very welcoming, from the director to the aids. Concerns are taken care of in a timely minor. I requested a care team meeting to ask how to get my brother more involved in activities instead of spending so much time in front of the TV watching sports and movies (which he loves to do). Now he is involved in activities and making new friends which he loves more. A staff person will bring him so he can attend. My brother enjoys the food. The culinary chef came to Bill’s room shortly after he arrived to ask what his favorite foods were. Also every Friday is Happy Hour. The food and drinks are delicious. And the first Sunday of every month there’s a Sunday brunch where family members are welcomed. I feel so much is done to help residents experience a normal home life. There are trips into the community that Bill can’t attend right now. However, this spring hopefully I can make arrangements to go along so Bill can be involved. Both Brother Bill and I see a long happy life at Vienna Springs thanks to this caring staff. A special thanks to Kristen, Kourtney and Holly.

She has fallen too many times to count because she needs aid to get in and out of her wheelchair. Her things were stolen. Clothes(which had her name in) wedding ring and glasses. They really don’t have that many activities to keep them busy. Most of the time you see the residents just sitting and doing nothing. The bathrooms in the rooms are dirty. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Dayton, OH
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
