Riverdale is a suburban neighborhood in the Bronx, one of the five boroughs of New York City. As the most populous city in the U.S., New York City is home to approximately 8,336,817 residents, of whom 14.5% are 65 years of age or older. The Riverdale area is served by numerous health care providers, including Montefiore Medical Center and St. Barnabas Hospital. According to U.S. News and World Report’s rankings, Montefiore Medical Center is one of the state’s top 10 hospitals.
Seniors in need of nursing home care in Riverdale can expect to see monthly prices in the low five digits. Semi-private rooms cost $11,771 per month, while private rooms cost $12,319 per month. These steep costs reflect the high level of care available in nursing homes. Seniors who do not require skilled nursing care may find that other living options may better fit their needs and budget, such as assisted living or home health care.
This guide includes a handful of resources that can help seniors assess and find the care services they need. It also compares the cost of different types of senior care.

My aunt is in Schervier Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. It’s very nice and clean, and the people are nice. There are some issues, but all in all, I recommend it. The social worker at the hospital recommended them. They’re caring, kind, and attentive. Whenever there’s a problem or whether they want to administer any medication, they call me. They called to ask me if it was OK to give the flu shot.
I don’t meet with the staff as often as I like, but they have a care team that includes a social worker, physical therapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, and the doctor. I only met them once because my aunt changed floors and we did a Zoom conference and they were all there giving me updates on her. They’re very professional. I was there once for dinner, and it looked pretty good. I haven’t observed any activity, but I called once and she was participating in music, so she couldn’t come to the phone.
The upkeep is excellent. They’re doing some renovations on the first floor, but not the part that visitors go to. You can see it near the elevator. The facade and the layout are very nice. I like my aunt’s room. She has a roommate now, but the roommate has her own section and she has her own section, so it’s like she has her own private room.

But it was pretty big, nice, and well-decorated. The beds are pretty nice. It’s very nice inside. They had the therapy section. It’s pretty big and very nice. They are giving therapy to everybody, not just to one person. They work together. I see a lot of good things about the communication between them. I saw that they work well. It’s very clean, too.

The nursing staff during the days were quite good. The overnight shift left a lot to be desired. But the administration are a bunch of money hungry, greedy individuals. They submitted my bill that was already paid 5 months ago, to a collection agency, lowering my credit score by 40 points. I have called more than 5 times, but the current administrator will not even give me the courtesy of a return phone call, let alone clear up the mess that they created with the collection agency. I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THIS PLACE AGAIN.

I have never seen any kindness or quality care given my brother since he arrived. I sent him flowers 3 weeks ago because I couldn’t get in to visit him. When I arrived today, the flowers were there, still in the vase and still with wrapping, and dead with flies all about.
The nurses claimed not to have seen them!

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Riverdale, NY
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
Free Resources for Seniors in Riverdale, NY
The city of Riverdale has many resources for seniors to stay at home for as long as possible utilizing community-based organizations and also resources to support a smooth transition to nursing to home care.
The New York City Department for the Aging provides an intricate network of community-based providers that can improve quality of life for area seniors. In addition to nutrition and fall prevention education, the nonprofit agency has free art and fitness classes. Seniors can also contact the Department of Aging to find local ombudsmen and Medicare counselors.
This nonprofit organization has a network of senior centers in the Bronx area, along with numerous programs and services. Social workers are on-site to assist seniors with obtaining benefits and provide referrals for other community-based services. The agency also employs a counselor from Mosaic Mental Health, and support groups are available for seniors and their caregivers. Throughout the week, there are educational and fitness classes for members to enjoy. Membership is free for Riverdale residents aged 60 and older.
Located adjacent to NYU Medical Center, the Margaret Cochran Corbin VA Campus provides a plethora of primary and specialized medical care services. In addition to audiology and ophthalmology, seniors can find dental care and dermatology services. The clinic offers counseling services covering a variety of topics, ranging from nutrition to mental health.
New York’s Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program is designed to ensure that residents of long-term care facilities, including nursing homes, are getting appropriate levels of care. Ombudsmen can address issues that include elder abuse, financial exploitation and Medicaid discrimination, among others. The office responds to both first-party complaints by nursing home residents and third-party complaints by nursing home visitors.
Working with the NY Department for the Aging, NY HIICAP offers health insurance counseling for Medicare beneficiaries. State-certified counselors help seniors better understand and compare Medicare Advantage plans and Medigap policies. Additionally, counselors can identify individuals who qualify for financial assistance programs, such as supplemental prescription coverage, and assist in resolving issues with their health insurance.
