Yonkers is perched along New York’s scenic Hudson River. Given that 16.5% of its 200,000 residents are 65 years of age or older, Yonkers is home to a sizable number of seniors. Medical facilities local seniors can choose from include Saint Joseph’s Medical Center and St. John’s Riverside Hospital. Both offer emergency care and the services of various specialists.
Also in Yonkers are a variety of nursing homes that charge an average monthly rate of $11,771 per the Genworth Cost of Care Survey. This makes Yonkers more expensive than the typical American city where the rate is $7,756. Nursing home services are usually robust and include regular attention from medical professionals and therapy programs that contribute to their high price. To save money and find a more appropriate fit, seniors with higher levels of independence may consider home health care or assisted living rather than nursing home care.
This guide contains information on the costs of nursing homes and other senior care providers in Yonkers. Additionally, the guide describes some useful resources for Yonkers’ elders.

My father has been in Sans Souci nursing home for close to a month now. Everybody’s friendly there. He’s probably not having a good time, but he’s comfortable and he’s happy with everybody there. He has a heater/air-conditioner, which he’s allowed to control. He has a window. The accommodations are good. The bathroom is very clean. He’s on a restricted diet, so the food that they’re giving has no taste, but that’s because he has diabetes. He’s complaining about it because he can’t have what he wants, but he can’t have that right now.
The staff is good and friendly. When my dad has any complaints like he has a headache or anything, he just lets the staff know and they talk to the nurse and they give him medicine or they give him creams for his feet. When I go visit him, they do the COVID test and everything, which is pretty good. I’ve gone there when they’re giving him his therapy and the therapists are very friendly. They talk to him in Spanish as well, which is good. As soon as you walk in, everybody greets you from every nurse station to the floor where he’s at. As soon as you walk out, they greet you. They’re friendly. I’ve seen the food and it’s warm. It’s never cold or anything. It’s good food, but it’s not what he wants to eat.

They submitted my bill that was already paid 5 months ago, to a collection agency, lowering my credit score by 40 points. I have called more than 5 times, but the current administrator will not even give me the courtesy of a return phone call, let alone clear up the mess that they created with the collection agency. I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THIS PLACE AGAIN.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Yonkers, NY
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
Free Resources for Seniors in Yonkers, NY
In Yonkers, many organizations and agencies work to make the aging process easier to navigate. These resources can help seniors and their families with tasks like completing applications and gathering information. Some offerings are relevant to seniors still living at home, and others aid older adults in different care settings like nursing homes.
The Office for the Aging serves Yonkers residents 60 years of age and up as well as people concerned with their well-being. The office's home-based services program is a way for seniors to access housekeeping and personal care, nutritional information and home-delivered meals. The program also offers caregiver support and transportation. Case managers are available through the Office for the Aging as well.
The Ombudsman Program's representatives educate and advocate for residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. Ombudsmen work with facility staff members, seniors and their family members to find resolutions to problems. The program also provides referrals when appropriate.
HIICAP offers counseling on Medicare and Medicare Advantage Plans. Additionally, the program helps individuals understand low-income subsidies that may make health insurance and medications more affordable. Medicare beneficiaries, people who represent them and individuals soon to be eligible for Medicare can use HIICAP.
The Westchester County Veterans Service Agency helps veterans identify and access military benefits. Older veterans can contact this agency for representation and aid in finding records and obtaining awards. Officers from the agency also assist with benefits applications. The agency works with veterans' families too.
Yonkers offers various property tax exemptions, some of which may apply to low-income seniors 65 years of age and up. There are also exemptions that apply to veterans and individuals with disabilities. For more information, seniors can find applications online or contact the Assessment Office at the number listed here.
