Nursing Home Communities in Council Bluffs, IA

"This is a small facility "” offering 12 rooms of assisted living and 20 of skilled nursing. The main street nearby is busy, but the facility itself is on a quieter street, and rather peaceful. There's nothing exciting about the exterior"”a small building that looks like an office building as opposed to being homey. There is an outside area for residents to use, but it's not too appealing. When you enter, there is a nurses' station, but no separate reception area. The whole place is clean and free of odors, but has the look and feel of a "regular nursing home." There are no common areas beyond a separate eating lunchroom and TV room at the end of end hall. There doesn't seem to be an activities director, although the nursing staff organizes occasional ice cream socials. Most residents seem to keep to themselves and the staff doesn't seem to do much to engage them. The food is offered in a variety of styles"”including pureed and fortified, and the staff accommodates requests as much as possible and helps feed those who need assistance. The food generally doesn't look too appetizing, but the residents don't complain about it much. The caregiving staff is a nice group"”certified nursing assistants, medication aides and LPNs. The nursing staff focuses on how to keep the residents safe and healthy"”and they work together and communicate well in this small facility. There is an adequate number of staff to care for the residents. No one complains about giving a helping hand. The best fit for Lindenwood might be someone in need of more longterm care, since there is not a lot of stimulation for those who are able to be more independent. Medicaid is accepted. "

"The Douglas County Health Center is very clean. If I would compare it with other facilities in the area, I think the staff is a lot more caring and knowledgeable. The staff is highly trained to care for patients with Alzheimer's and Dementia. I haven't heard any complaints about the food. There are 4 people to a room. I would recommend this facility to others. "

"My Mother has been a resident at this facility for over ten years. She went into their memory loss unit and now she is completely unable to talk, walk and has to be fed blended food. I think the caring staff at her nursing facility has kept her alive longer because of their attention to her needs. The people in these facilities have a special gift in order to be able to care for the elderly. "

"Our mom was in rehab at Florence Home Healthcare Center. I was very pleased. They were fantastic. The staff was very attentive, communicated well with us, and took really good care of her. It's a three-floor building, so it was good. What I liked least was the parking. There's not a whole lot of it, and the stalls were very narrow. She had three meals a day and they were all very good, she said. They had physical therapy, occupational therapy, they did bathing a few times a week, and they had crafts they were able to do, they had bingo and stuff like that. I think they did a really good job all around."

"The staff was very good when I visited Oak Grove Manor. The rooms were very nicely decorated. The food is very good as well. "

"My mom has been at Omaha Nursing and Rehab for almost 3 yrs..i give them 10 stars.. My mom receives the best care from eveyone from nurses, aides, dietary staff, social director, volunteers etc..i would never have her anyplace else"

"Both my parents are residents here, and my mom had chronic issues with skin breakdown BEFORE she came in. I must say the staff has done an excellent job of keeping her skin in good condition and keeping her well-nourished. The activity program is well-developed. My dad recently went on hospice services, and the facility has been supportive of the additional support staff coming in. Only once in 6 years did the staff fail to notify me that one of my parents had been admitted to the hospital- and when that error was identified, the head nurse filed an incident report and took corrective action immediately. Overall, the facility is clean and well-kept. Staff turnover is a concern, as it is everywhere. I wish they had a day room or activity room, because residents usually hang out around the front desk area or in their rooms. As an occupational therapist, this facility was not my first choice but overall I have been happy with the care they have provided my parents. "

"We placed my mom there for memory care/long term needs about a year ago. Maple Crest staff is staffed by a very competent and supportive team from admissions, to care planning to those doing the on the ground work. We have family and friends who are social workers in Omaha and Maple Crest came highly recommended and was our first choice. The transition was flawless and handled as well as could be handled for a difficult situation. I feel so lucky that she is in a facility that loves and cares for her. Recent facility upgrades were nice. Options of single and double rooms. The room mate selection on the memory care unit has some thought into matching temperaments. Originally she was in a single and I like her move to the double better for socialization. On the memory care unit there is a 'quiet room' with soft music and lovely visuals that my mom loves. 3 communal areas not including a small out door courtyard. My mom is encouraged to engage in activities in center as much as possible...chapel, singing, Bingo even paper delivery as long as she is able and appropriate to participate. The recreational therapist is excellent. Memory care is difficult anywhere and these guys and gals excel and finding the joy and beauty in the messy. They are responsive to concerns and suggestions. Highly recommend. "

"I like the rehab people at Hillcrest Health Services. I was in a small room, and it is on the end, so I was one of the last one to get service in the morning. The food was repetitious, and I have gone through the menu several times. The food was good; there just weren't a whole lot of choices. They have activities like bingo and flower arranging, but I just didn't participate in a lot of them. The place is very clean. When a person is on oxygen, they were very careless on where they put the nosepiece. A lot of times it was on the floor. That can be improved. They need more help than what they had when I was there. "

"In 2013, I broke my leg, and then I had surgery. I did rehab at the Ambassador in Omaha. I was there for about a month. They were helpful, yes. They helped me do all kinds of things. They helped me dress, eat, shower, go to the bathroom, do some physical therapy, those kinds of things. I had a private room. It was comfortable and came with most of the amenities you might expect -- a TV set, hospital bed, a chair and stuff for visitors. The food was OK. The dining room was a big room with many tables. They had, I believe, tablecloths on the tables. It was clean. The nursing staff was good. One thing was that I could not go outside without someone with me, and I thought that was a little restrictive. "

"My dad was at Nebraska Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The staff was friendly when I visited. The rooms were pretty good. There was a bed, a couple of chairs, and a table. There was a little couch, a TV, and a dormitory size refrigerator in the room. The security and safety seemed to be good. They had cameras at the entrances. I would probably refer this facility to my friends. "

"I don't know what others have seen at Skyline but my experience was totally different!! The people that live there are very well taken care of and the place looks very nice and clean. The entrances can be confusing but once you know your way around its not a problem at all and definetly no reason not to send your loved one there. Our loved one was recently there for a rehab visit and there care and rehab was top notch. The new owners have really started to turn the place around. Its nice to have a facility in the Benson/Omaha area that offers great care. We don't have to send our loved ones all the way across town to receive quality care. Thanks for all you did while our mom was there!! "

"I feel the bare minimal cleaning is done in the establishment. I visited my husband many times and couldn't stand the smell of the place. One time the smell of sewer was so bad it made my eyes water. As far as the staff goes, if they don't like you, they treat you like crap. Same with family members. They pick their favorites. They love my husband but hate me. They refuse to take or return my calls. When I visit they turn their nose up at me. I, on several occasions expressed my concerns on my husband's health and they dismiss it as I don't know what I'm talking about. I had to send my daughter to check on him and he was found slumped over, skin beginning to turn gray because his blood sugar was extremely high and he had to be taken to ER. There were 2 other times I had to bring his health to their attention and both times he had to be admitted to the hospital and both times he didn't know who or where he was. I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. They only get a one star rating because 0 isn't an option."
