Despite being only 35 minutes southwest of downtown Chicago, the sparse population and abundance of trees in Palos Heights give a sense that the suburban city is further away from the metropolis. The 2020 census reveals that 29.4% of Palos Heights’ 12,000 residents are aged 65 and older — a figure that’s almost double the national average. The city’s highly regarded Palos Hospital may be a factor in its appeal to seniors, as well as its proximity to Chicago and some of the best medical facilities in the country. The numerous Medicare-registered physicians also benefit the city’s older population.
Nursing homes are care facilities for seniors who require 24/7 support from medical professionals and highly trained care staff. In these facilities, physicians develop personalized care programs for residents which are administered by registered nurses and licensed therapists, with support from nursing aides. A semiprivate room in a Palos Heights’s nursing home costs $8,076 per month. However, more affordable options are available for seniors who don’t require around-the-clock care, such as assisted living and home health care.
This guide discusses the costs of various types of senior care in Palos Heights and lists some senior-friendly resources.

My 92 year old mom passed away at this facility 9 months ago On january 18th 2021. She had lost a good portion of her eyesight within 10 months prior to entering this facility. She then had something similar to a stroke. Unable to move for the most part and declined each day. Due to covid I was not able to see her. Trying to reach someone on her floor to either talk to my mom or a staff member was a struggle. The ONLY nurse i was able to reach and had compassion was louis. The floor manager a short young girl had NO COMPASSION at all. When they told us they were putting mom in hospice they told us we could make an appointment for 2 days later to see her. All the floor manager cared about was if mom was still their after 5 more days we would have to pay. We gave her our decision to leave mom at the facility vs risking mom passing away in an ambulance if we brought her home. After we told her our decision all she did was walk away from us. Maybe she will be in the same situation some day. And I hope some day I will see her so I can tell her how I feel to her face. She is a disgrace to that facility.

I have a family member that’s in manor care that’s blind and needs assistance with almost everything. She was admitted on February 13, 2020 and on Saturday, February 15th they did get her up and dressed. On Sunday, February 16th I noticed she still had the same outfit on so I asked if she was going to get cleaned up and changed, well of course the nurse that was on staff said of course. I came again on Tuesday, February 18th and she was still in the same clothing, I was furious, well again I was told they was going to change her. I came back on Wednesday, February 19th and there she was with the same outfit on. Finally I told them she was not leaving for dialysis until someone cleaned her up and change her clothing, finally two CNA’s took her in the bathroom and washed her up. This is terrible how she’s being treated. This past Sunday, March 1, 2020 I asked for a manager, finally someone came in and stated she was a manager her name was Shannon, I mentioned to her that they patient needed a shower asap because she’s been a patient at manor care since February 13th and no one thought it would be nice to take her and give her a good shower, her body is very itchy and nasty looking, she assured me that she make a note and have the next shift give her a shower. Time went by so I asked the nurse she assured me that she would get a shower if not that night first thing the next morning which was Monday, March 2nd. She is being neglected just because she can’t see or do anything for herself. I told them she loves playing bingo but need assistance, I was told no problem someone will assist. No one ever, ever, ever came to get her, all they do is leave her sitting in the lobby ALL DAY LONG. She love sitting in front of her tv listening to her programs. She’s totally IGNORED. If you have a love one that cannot do for themselves DO NOT SEND THEM HERE. This place is only for patients that can take care of themselves. Managers do not return phone calls at all. The only person that was nice, truthful and showed concern was the REHAB DOCTOR!
I am a very angry family member!

They have apartments for seniors, then they have assisted living, then they have memory care, and then they have long-term skilled nursing. However, I was told that the kind of care that my mother would qualify for would require a private cost, and that’s $10,000 or $11,000 a month and I was like, ‘OK, forget it. I’m going to stop right here.’ However, they have activities, they have a beauty parlor, and they have movies.

Very disappointed in the facility. It was great when it was Holy Family and Religious women worked there. It has really gone downhill since becoming symphony. I am looking for a new facility. It is no longer as clean, the nurses hang around the station chatting with each other when residents are screaming for help, and the food leaves a lot to be desired. I had to interrupt the nursing staff hen fest to get them to reposition a patient who was screaming in pain and all twisted in his wheelchair. Unacceptable! They serve crusty hard to cut pieces of breaded chicken (mostly breading) that is too difficult for the residents to cut so they don’s eat as much. No longer impressed and residents are not getting what they are paying for. They need supervisors who know what the staff is doing and not doing, and nurses who care. So sad.

The rooms were in a square around the outside perimeter of the building, with a kitchen that you can even cook in if you want. You can be fed in your room, or you can go to the dining area and sit at a table. Behind the kitchen is the rehab facilities. The staff spoiled him. They were friendly, and it was like home. The nurses would visit, sit, and chat with him. He could play cards, watch TV, and sit in the screened porch when the weather was decent. Rooms were on the first and second floor and had a living room, sofas, and chairs, like you would have in your own home.

They were better than the rehab she was at earlier. It was nice, it was clean, but it was old. It was very friendly. Everyone said hi to you. Like all the workers, they were very friendly. You’d walk in there, they’d all say hi. My mom complained about the food, but it seemed okay. The room was above average. Her room did not have a TV though. There was a dresser, and she had a good view of a pond, so that was kind of nice. It was a nice room.

I came into the facility from back surgery at Christ very hopeful of my recovery. My caretaker and her sister brought my belongings in a Harley bag as it would not fit on the ambulance stretcher along with my walker, misc hospital supplies, and coat.
I got sick twice and ended up in intensive care one of the times. I was not offered the opportunity to receive a Covid-19 immunization shot, either from the facility doctor, or for my caretaker to transport me to my doctor’s office.
The service was not very good. I spent most of my time back and forth from the hospitals, and my quarantine was restarted back to zero each time I returned.
I would not recommend any one to go here. They do not return phone messages or update patients on their condition.

I liked Aperion Care Burbank. It was the best one we found, even though they had three beds in the room. The place looked clean. It was the cleanest one. Our issue is that we wanted my friend to have a private room. It is a nursing home and rehab. The staff was very good and very cordial. They gave the tour and answered questions that I had. They were tending to the residents. There were three residents per room, and they had their own TVs, closets, and bedside tables. The whole place was clean.
One thing I liked about them is that they have the residents get out of their rooms to go to the cafeteria area. They take them outside for walks. They don’t let them lay in bed all day like some of these places do. They get them up and out. They have activities for those that are able to do the activities. They have an activity room. They have a room with a bike and treadmill. There are also small things they can do with their arms, if they’re able to do so. A lot of them are in wheelchairs. My friend is in a wheelchair, too.
When I went there, they were kind of congregated in the cafeteria area. They were just doing their thing. They were eating. They had a gathering, and nobody was in their rooms. They were all outside, and their beds were made up. It was clean.
They have a schedule of what they get for their meals every day. My friend is diabetic, and the staff said they have alternatives to the meal plan. If somebody doesn’t like this or that, there are some alternatives to the meals that they give them. There is some construction going on right now on both sides of their street. It is easy to get to, and they have parking. The grounds are cared for and manicured.
The only drawback is we were trying to find a private room for her, but they have three beds in there. The staff told me that when they bring the residents in, they put them in a room by themselves so they can evaluate what their temperament is. They try to put them in a room with somebody that compares to their personality, which I thought was a good thing.

We chose Dimensions Living Burr Ridge for my mom for its location. She’s in their skilled nursing part, and the staff seems very caring and attentive to my mom. She’s on soft food right now. It’s good for her. I like the fact that if she gets better, she can go to memory care. They also have assisted living, and everything is in the same building. They have a salon and outdoor seating. It’s pricey, but all of them that I have seen have been expensive. I guess I’m getting what I’m paying for.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Palos Heights, IL
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
