There are two sides to Rutland Nursing Home: Nursing and Rehab. The rehab department is FANTASTIC. The staff are very warm and welcoming. They bonded and treated my family member with the utmost respect and love. They are committed to helping not only restore the individuals physical abilities, but also their dignity. However, the nursing department is horrible!! The administrators have their heads in the sand. They are more concerned with image and overlooking their faults, than correcting issues and providing good care and a psychologically healthy environment for the residents. They do not support the staff members that really want to provide the best care for the residents. They have no respect or concern for the residents who are mostly Afro-American and Afro-Caribbean. The units look like a flashback to the 1950's. It is always dirty, and reeking of urine and feces. There are NO amenities unless you count the vending machines that only offer junk foods. There are no activities for the residents. They can only stay in their room or pile up in the lobby or outside when its warm. The food is unhealthy and monotonous. There are MICE, ROACHES, FLIES, WORMS in nursing units. And during the winter NO HEAT and NO HOT WATER. Overall I regret bringing my family member to this facility. It looks like they are not managing and allocating the moneys. Yet the big bosses are driving Mercedes Benz and other luxury cars. Go figure...

Bed sores are common in the facility, my husband had bed sores frequently, and they call to tell you when it is at its worse stage. Ever so often patients were dying in the same room where my husband was and I was concerned not knowing my husband was next. I noticed my husband's breathing was abnormal and brought it to the nurse attention and he said oh no he is fine he died 3 days later and no one called to let me know he was declining. When he died the doctor call to say he was found unresponsive and he tried compressions but his lungs collapsed. He unresponsive 4 days prior to that. He was not able to speak for himself so they took advantage of the situation. If you have bed ridden relatives there please check often for bed sores, they cause meningitis and sepsis and cause death.

In just one day I saw 3 mince, roaches freely roaming the halls and flies swarming the dirty diapers of residents. It's awful. I'm moving my grandmother ASAP.

When my grandmother had a stroke it was a very stressful time. I was scared of losing her and was glad that she managed to pull through. She stayed in Rutland Nursing home from March of 2011 to April of 2012 and I visited at least 3 times a week, thus I am very familiar with the facility. They are many positive things about the nursing home, one being its proximity to many amenities. The Nursing home is on the campus of the Kingsbrook Jewish medical center complex. This means if's a 30 second walk from the hospital which comes in handy in case anything were to happen to love ones they will get help instantly. Another good thing about the nursing home is its staff (excluding doctors). The nurses, physician assistants and nurse assistants are very kind and do a lot to make the residents feel as comfortable as possible. They have a great rehabilitation center that is stocked with amazing exercise equipment and they employ a lot of good people who can help your love ones regain speech and physical capabilities. My grandmother received speech and physical therapy every day for most of her time there and I really noticed an improvement in her movements as well as the way she talks. Though Rutland Nursing Home has a lot going for it there are many problems with the facility. One of the main problems with the nursing home is the lack of doctors. I am not sure if they are trying to save money by stretching their doctors thin or if doctors just dislike working there but their lack of presence is noticeable. Numerous times my grandmother had to wait DAYS to see a doctor to get a checkup or to ask a question. Another problem is the noise; someone is constantly talking on the PA system from morning till night. This makes it hard for the people there to go to sleep and also adds unneeded stress on them. Food is another problem with the nursing home; many of the dishes are bland and quite unhealthy. Most of the time I cooked meals at home and brought it to my grandmother to eat because she hated the meals provided. Lastly, they weren't enough activities to keep the people there occupied. The only form of entertainment provided is television sets in the room and 1 movie night a week. I understand it's a nursing home and not a club but seeing the same people, eating the same food day after day for over a year will make you go insane. My last complaint with the facility is the elevator systems. The facility doesn't allow access to the stairs so everyone is forced to use the elevators. Due to this you can end up waiting 5-7mins just to go down to the floor below you. Choosing a nursing home is a huge decision. For my grandmother Rutland Nursing Home was the best facility for us mainly because of its proximity to my home. For other people who do not live close to Rutland I would advise them to look at as many alternatives as possible before making a final decision.

This place is a perfect nursing home.I have a grandmother that is in there. The workers and nurses treated her with so much love. My grandmother enjoyed being there. I see her smiling every time I come to visit. I never seen a rude disrespectful worker at that nursing home. This nursing home was also very clean and sanitary. In this place they have great food for the residents. My grandmother enjoys the food very much. The food the chefs serve at that nursing home looked like food you would order from a restaurant. This nursing home has a lot of nurses working there so if someone got really hurt then a nurse would be very close by. My grandmother loves being here because of the fun activities there are in the nursing home. She is never bored. This nursing home is good because people are respectful, the food is good and this place is clean.
