Augustana Apartments is a really nice place. The staff and residents are very nice, caring, friendly, and open. It’s just really wonderful. I just moved in last Saturday. I think it is a good atmosphere. They are accommodating if you’re struggling with something. They try to help you when they can and do the job they’re supposed to doing. They’re good. The food is very tasty and very good. I can’t think of anything they need to improve on. I think their prices are probably right on. Security is very good.

I was not impressed with Augustana Apartments. It was dismal and not real welcoming, although the person that showed us around was wonderful. The facilities were drab and dreary. The two-bedroom apartment was very spacious and had a lot of storage room, but it didn't have a washer dryer in the apartment because it's an old building. You have to go down this dingy little elevator to the basement. Then you had to pay 50 cents for washing and 50 cents for drying, and it was just like a dank basement room. We looked at the sixth floor, and the windows in the apartment were just dirty from the outside. They hadn't been cleaned up from all the spring pollen, the rain, the dust, and everything. There was a lot of street and sidewalk construction going on in the area. I'm sure that raised a lot of dust and then with a little bit of rain. It did not leave me with a positive impression at all. The dining area was just functional at best. I left feeling that if I went there, I would be an old person in a warehouse; they would meet my basic needs and that would be about it. They had a craft room, but the exercise room was deplorable. The equipment was old, and there was like black electric tape on all the handles because they'd been worn out. There were just a few machines. Nothing was real attractive. It was just dull. The dining room was such that I don't even know that I'd want to eat in that dining room. It was just drab and dull. About a third or more of the residents are on public assistance, and that's OK because I'm very much into providing places for people that need financial help; however, the residents I saw looked shabby and dull. They looked like they were just sort of existing.

My mother is moving to Augustana Apartments. My mom liked it, and the staff was fine and seemed OK. Shes moving into a 2-bedroom, 1-bath apartment, and there are a lot of people she knows there. Its a good location for her. Its close to her doctor and her church.

Over the more than two years I lived here the nature of the facility and the residents changed greatly and unfortunately, for the most part, not to the good. Before living here or moving a relative here I would urge that you take several meals here -- they do take guests and talk to the residents, at random, and ask if they are longer term residents have they noticed changes and, if so, what were those changes. There are many excellent staff but some of the best have left for a variety of reasons. My best advise is try it out and check it out before moving.

I chose to be in Augustana Apartment because they had a lot of things that you could participate in and they had a hairdresser there, a pharmacy, a doctor, and several sitting areas. I also like my one-bedroom apartment, which is very roomy. The staff is great. They cook food three times a day and it's really fantastic. They have a menu where you could select what you want for a particular meal. I'm really happy here.

We visited Augustana Apartments to consider it as a place for our great-grandmother and her sister to live, because of its convenient location and since they are affiliated with the Augustana Lutheran Church. Our great-aunt was particularly active in the church for many years and knows many of the people who reside at the facility. We were welcomed into the facility and given a tour of all of the main rooms which were homey, nicely decorated and had lots of windows. Both our great-grandmother and great-aunt really enjoyed that. Augustana offers a variety of types of living conditions for its residents, which we really liked. For example, our great-grandmother is not ambulatory and needs more physical assistance than our great-aunt. Our great-aunt was a regular contributor to the Meals on Wheels program "“ even delivering meals to elders who were younger than herself. She's always been in very good physical condition, with nearly no health problems. However, she had an unfortunate auto accident that left her with little short term memory. If it weren't for that, she would be able to live with very minimal assistance. The apartments were all lovely "“ nicely furnished and easy to navigate. This is important for our great grandmother, who uses a walker. The staff regularly checks in on all of the residents. This is key for us, because of our great-grandmother's physical condition and the fact that our great-aunt is forgetful. She does not have Alzheimer's, but because of her accident she has very little short term memory. So we were concerned that she might appear to be fine on her own, yet needs to be looked after. The grounds are well-kept, with plenty of seating. Our great-grandmother and her sister really like to be outside when the weather is warm enough. Their rooms have adjacent patios, which is really nice, particularly for visitors! There are many options for food, from the formal dining area, casual dining area to preparation of their own food. Many healthy snacks are offered throughout the day, some of which we shared with some of the residents during an event they were having. The social services department offers an array of activities, from art, readings and films to attending local cultural events at museums, playhouses and music venues. They also arrange to have performers visit for special occasions. Birthdays are celebrated with monthly cakes from the local bakery, which is really very nice. Because we were comfortable with the atmosphere and physical appearance of Augustana, and because our great-grandmother and her sister felt it was very familiar, we chose it as the place where they would live for this chapter in their lives. We have made many visits since and can see that they and all of their new friends are doing very well. Because of this, we would highly recommend this facility to anyone who is considering it.
