"We went to the Harmony at West Ashley. I liked everything about this place. It's clean. It has a lot of natural light, and it's very well-equipped. It's so full of attention from the people who work there. There are a lot of the facilities where people can gather together and play, including a movie theater. It is a very good one. The staff was very attentive. They did introduce us to every possible aspect of living there, and they discussed things with us. It was very good. It's very convenient to use everything and gives you a possibility for independent living. They have two libraries. They have two places for playing cards. They have courtyards. They have a bistro, and they have a salon. They have a lot of things for people living independently."

"My relationship with Ashley Gardens is, of course, fairly short term considering that they only opened to residents this summer. This is the fourth facility my mother has been in and thus far I am very happy with the care she is receiving. I cannot speak for the rest of my family so these observations are totally my own. Ashley Gardens is light and cheerful in all areas, including the rooms. There are different rooms for activities and several outdoor areas which seem very pleasant and safe. The dining room is pleasant and the food seems to be of good quality. The building is laid out in a circular nature, all hallways connected, and is very good for Alzheimer's patients who may wander and get confused about their location. I have visited on different days and at varying times and always found adequate staff on duty. The staff is very interactive with both residents and family members and seem to be well trained. Planned activities seem well attended by staff and are of a nature that helps residents stay involved, such as making pizzas and banana pudding. Recently, I visited just before lunch and the staff brought my mother's lunch outside so we could have a picnic. Placing a loved one in an assisted living facility is a difficult decision to make, but based on my experience with Ashley Gardens, residents are clean, happy and safe. "

"Mount Pleasant Gardens Alzheimer's Special Care Center was impressive. It was extremely clean. I did not see a speck of dust or a bug. The courtyard was beautifully landscaped. There was a nice fountain out there and people were just walking around enjoying the sunshine. Everybody seemed to care and their residents were kept busy. They were not just left by themselves sitting in their rooms. Their imaginations and intellect were being stimulated constantly. The staff who gave us the tour was very caring and very knowledgeable."

"Franke at Seaside was clean. The staff was very friendly, cooperative, and knew all the people living there. They had two or three dining facilities, a swimming pool, big exercise rooms, and well-kept grounds. It’s close to a little shopping center, several restaurants, and grocery stores. "

"I visited this facility on a tour and the renovations are beautiful. All the staff was friendly and went out of their way to say hello. The residents seemed to be well taken care and was taken part of activities. "

"The Blake at Carnes Crossroads was probably the nicest of all of them. It was very clean. I had a good impression. Even though the staff didn't know we had a meeting, she accommodated us. We were referred there originally by somebody who had been there, so we already knew the memory care was pretty good. I liked it a lot, but I don't think my parents would really fit into their assisted living at all. My mother's got dementia and the level of care that she needs is much more. The people were interactive and they keep them active with activities. We actually saw the activities going on there and we saw the staff was quite interactive as well. The staff members were all helping each other. They had Elvis there singing, they had games and movies, and people were picking up their family and were being interactive. It would seem like the place you would want to take your loved one."

"I did a tour of Quality Care Residential Home. I saw what type of rooms they had to offer. It's an amazing place. If it was more affordable, I would have moved my mom there right away. They had an in-house doctor that takes care of the people, and he was on call. My mom had Hutchinson's, so she would need a doctor who would be on call because she wouldn't be able to travel as much, and the doctor goes there, which makes it even better. The person who gave me the tour was the lady who runs the place. She was extremely helpful. Overall, it was great. I didn't try any of the food, but we went there while the seniors were eating. It seemed like they all were enjoying the food. The building itself was very nice, and the outside of the place was as well. It was someplace where I wouldn't mind my mom being there at all. It looks very good and very well kept."

"We went to Wildcat Senior Living. It was very nice. Everything was nice, clean, and well cared for. The staff was nice. We looked at a room for two people and it had a washer and dryer in there for our own use. They had network cable in each room. They also had generator power outside. The food was good. The dining area wasn't very far down the hall from where we looked at the room. The staff was very friendly and very cooperative. Some people were in the community center area, and they were doing puzzles. Everything was good there. They did have medical staff available."

"Palmettos of Charleston was nice. They had people come in once a month to sing and do activities. I liked the rooms, but the dining area was very small. They had corn dogs and spaghetti for the food choices, which I wasn’t too pleased about. They had an area where you can heat your food up or cook in there. They had a nice outside area, and the people were very friendly. "

"We have chosen Wellmore of Daniel Island for my mother-in-law. Well, she's from Daniel Island, and she's familiar with the area. She's still able to get around a little bit, and so we figured it wouldn't be a drastic change. Her friends could visit her; that's the main reason. It's also a very nice-looking facility. The staff was very friendly. Everybody introduced themselves as we walked through. They seemed very professional, and positive. My mother-in-law hasn't moved in yet. She'll be moving in next week. Wellmore of Daniel Island was excellent as far as physical condition. The dining room, the swimming pool, the TV room, the quiet room, and the sitting room were all well manicured, and clean. The staff was very friendly, and very helpful. Other than it being a little more expensive than the rest, I have no complaints about it. I think it's a fine facility. I was more impressed with the staff than the building, that's how good the staff presented themselves. The facility is only two years old."

"My husband is at Kempton of Charleston. He's been there for a year. Everybody has been great. My husband loves it there. It's a very nice place. They take good care of him, so I have no complaints. It's the most beautiful place in Charleston. It's like a five-star hotel. It's relatively new. The staff members are great. They have an activities director who takes them out to various places in Charleston, which is nice. One of the things I'm the happiest about is that they do a lot of activities. They're kept busy if they want to. She encourages everyone to participate. My husband gained 15 pounds, so he loves the food. It's a little bit more expensive."

"I visited Indigo Hall a few months ago. It seemed to be very new, nice and clean. There were no funny odors, and the people all seemed friendly. The staff that provided us with a tour and the different staff members that we encountered throughout the tour all seemed very friendly. We looked at the two private rooms, I guess. There was nothing over the top. It was just a large bedroom. To be quite honest, I probably liked another facility a little bit more than this place. The reason why we chose this place is because it's about ten or twelve minutes closer to where my niece lives (which is where my mother is currently staying). It was more a logistic decision than anything else at the moment. This one costs a little bit more, but I'm thinking long term down the road. My brother and I were going try to respite care, but once that's done (at some point in time), my mother will probably go into a facility full time. Don't know when that is, but in order to have my mother be able to receive visits every now and then from somebody, that's why we chose this place."

"I'm doing legwork for my 80 something year old folks with hope that they can move closer to us from another state and in to a retirement community. I have toured Somerby of Mount Pleasant, eaten in their wonderful, upscale restaurant style dining room, met and talked to other residents that live there, and now enjoy telling everyone about all of the amenities that will keep my folks young and active with a little, or a lot of, aide as needed while living there. While I continue to gather information from Caring.com through emails, and attend seminars offered by Somerby like how to qualify my 87 year old Dad for VA Benefits to live there, I am also learning a multitude of things from Caring.com about how to talk to my folks about all they will face when they are ready to move. Caring.com emails timely and useful information for me, the daughter, to be able to Segway in to conversations with my folks about all they may need to think about. We don't have a move date but we will all be fully informed to make the best decisions possible with them. "
