Dorchester Seniors is a nonprofit corporation that coordinates with other social organizations and agencies throughout the area of Dorchester County to provide senior residents 60 or older with advocacy services and direct social support via the programs it helps run. Their services to the elderly include in-home care support, meal services and transportation. Seniors can also participate in numerous social activities that Dorchester Seniors organizes. Group lunches are available from 12 p.m. Monday to Friday at both of the organization’s senior centers at no cost and Dorchester Seniors also delivers lunches to homebound elderly residents.

The state government of South Carolina manages and offers the GetCareSC service through its Department of Aging to residents of the state. GetCareSC essentially offers a massive online resource portal with assorted digital search tools that the elderly, their caregivers and their family members can use to rapidly find legal support programs, financial support services, and medical care subsidy programs available to them. The search portal is curated and regularly updated by the South Carolina Department of Aging.

Charleston Area Senior Citizens (CASC) is a local nonprofit that offers Meals on Wheels services and other assistance to elderly residents of the greater Charleston area, which includes Summerville. This organization offers group dining sessions for the elderly too. CASC’s home delivery of meals is done through its coordination with the regional Meals on Wheels program. The CASC also manages an assisted living residence in central Charleston with subsidized services. This is open to a limited number of seniors through an application process.

South Carolina Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP)

The Federal Government largely funds the state Weatherization Assistance Program for South Carolina. This particular program gives preference to households with families that have disabled members and to homes with elderly individuals 60 or older. Seniors receiving veterans benefits and Supplemental Social Income payments are automatically eligible to join. Otherwise, the program requires that those who apply earn $25,760 or less per year per individual in the household.
