"My dad is moving into Adobe Country Gables. It was the closest to family, but it was also one of the only places that he could have his own room. It was really nice and was just a combination of everything working out pretty much. There was only one person that I had talked to. He was nice, answered all my questions, and answered the phone when I called. I called two or three times after and he had no issues answering the phone or anything like that. When we showed up, most of the residents were actually in the living room watching the Olympics, which I thought was pretty cool. And then from their brochure, it says they have different activities. The stuff in the backyard was extremely nice and big. He said that they do barbecues, too."

"Vista Del Rio is probably the best place I saw, and if I had the money, I would have moved in the day I saw it. It was new, and the staff was lovely. I liked everything about the facility and the fact that you don’t need to go outside the building to do an activity. It was bright and cheerful. The dining room was exquisite, and the food was out of this world. We enjoyed every minute that we were there. The people seemed comfortable. It was three stories, and I only saw one elevator. "

"The Thunderbird Senior Living meets the needs of my family member because he was in search of friendly companionship and the staff is more than congenial. They explained a lot of their benefits to us before we even signed up. So, we knew what we were signing up for. The food pleases him. He's on a limited diet but he is always complimenting the food. He looks forward to the weekly shopping trip by bus. The first day we moved him in, in the morning, the other family members and I were hungry, and he had his first meal there so we guided him through the process and we had a great chicken dinner. We all enjoyed it. I know they have games going on, but he doesn't enjoy games. He likes listening to people at the table. He likes the conversations, but he won't do anything. They're probably not the fanciest place, but they're the most economical place for us. We felt like we were getting our money's worth because he's on a tight budget and we need to look around to see what fits into his budget and this place did. Yet it didn't seem to be cutting any corners anywhere. He gets everything he needs, and the place is clean and very pretty. It's just miles away from my home. I have to drive about 45 minutes to get there. The people we met were just about two, the front receptionist and the lady that explained the whole place and the money situation, and they were delightful people. They took time to answer our questions and actually, we did a drop-in. We didn't even have an appointment and she fit right into our schedule, which was very nice. We didn't know we were going there. We just had a list and we were in that area. So, I thought she was very accommodating and I don't know her name, but she was the person to be on staff at that time. The whole place is very attractive. It's pretty and I know he has room cleaning, and so that, too, is very well situated and I never saw anything that looked like dust or anything, so I think cleanliness is excellent."

"Lifestream seemed to be very clean and very neat. They have a main dining room where they serve three meals a day or you'd be able to fix small meals in your own apartment. Everybody seemed to be very helpful and very willing to help as best as they could. Unfortunately, we had some very difficult issues to deal with. My mom has had everything done in a certain particular way or this wasn't going to work, like she is a heavy smoker and there is no smoking allowed anywhere in the property and visitors were, of course, welcomed but they were restricted to certain time frames because the units were all in one main building and if it was at certain time in the evening, and I don't remember what it was but I am imagining after office hours during the week, then somebody would have to go in and unlock the doors and whoever it was you were visiting would have to come and meet you at the door. They had everything from Bingo and poker night to just basic social activities. The one thing that really would have turned my mom on was they actually had a Scrabble night every week. They did special parties and things like that for birthdays, and they had the bus station in Glendale that could take the more independent residents over to Walmart -- which is just two or three blocks away -- and over to Fry's. Their best bus would come to the station and pick them up and take them to do their shopping and everything, and then they return later to pick them up. It had some pretty stringent rules, so if you were someone who works throughout the week and only had your weekends available because of your work schedule or something like that, I could see that this could really make it problematic for family or friends to be able to come and visit; either the residents have to let them in themselves, or they have to get there when there is someone available in the office to open the doors. It is a very closed, locked-in facility. "

"Solstice Senior Living at Sun City West was very nice. The grounds were pleasant and adequate. The rooms were small, but all the necessities were there. The staff was informative. They had a little library, and they have a big gathering place where you could just sit. When you go there, included in your monthly rent is a rec center card to the recreational centers at Sun City West."

"I liked MorningStar Senior Living at Golden Ridge. That was honestly the one that I would have preferred to have my dad at, but my stepmother lives in Gilbert, and she wanted my dad closer to her. They did independent all the way through memory care, but I was looking at memory care. They did exercise and arts and crafts, they said they had music come in once a week, and they had "no cooking" cooking class. They had a very big foyer, a big dining area, and an outdoor area that was enclosed for memory care, so they could still go out, but it was still secured. The staff members were all really friendly. What I liked about that place was its philosophy was mingling the different levels of care. In a lot of places I went to, the memory care people just stay in that one unit and they couldn't go anywhere else. Whereas at MorningStar, they mix them, so all of the activities there were for independent living all the way through memory care. There was a lot more interaction happening. They were telling how the independent people living there would help the people in memory care do whatever the activity is. This is all that they told me. My dad did not end up going there, so I don't know how it played out in real life, but I liked that idea, especially with my dad. He's just barely at the start of memory care need. I liked the idea of him getting to be more socially interactive with others because that would help him with his cognition, just having that socialization happening. I like that the activities they plan were for everybody and they would take the people from memory care out, so they weren't just always locked away. I also like that if my stepmom had chosen to, she could stay with him in the memory care area, but still be independent. She could come and go as she wanted because in most of the places if they were in memory care, they couldn't have someone living with them. I liked that they could have stayed together at that place. They were the only place that I went to that had those options."

"I have actually been in Glencroft because we helped a gentleman move in there. I thought was a little cleaner. He had an apartment with a kitchenette, a living room, and a bedroom. I thought it was pretty nice with a full size refrigerator. The facility has an age limit. You have to be at least 62 to be there. "

"I toured Holiday Vista de la Montana, which met all my needs, but others were more comfortable. I ate a couple of times there, and the people were nice. The food was fair. It was nothing to write home about."

"The Park at Surprise was very well kept, and everything was very nice. They had a lot of amenities and everything. When you walk into the reception area, they have a long hall that leads to everything, and that's where we were sitting and waiting; however, it seemed very dark and dreary. The people were very nice, it was just that welcoming entrance in the building wasn't very inviting. The people who work there are exceptionally nice. We met with the director, and he was very nice and accommodating. The other downfall was the price. I feel like it was extremely high. Sitting and watching the people who are there are professional people who have lots of money. They're like doctors and those types of people. The average person cannot afford a place like that. Also, they do not fix meals on Saturday and Sunday evenings. They fix breakfast up till like 11 or something, but they do not have an evening meal. With the price you're paying, I think they ought to have a meal available. While we were waiting to go on the tour, I got up and walked down, and I looked in to see that there was a salon and various things like that. We saw what they call a bedroom plus a den, and it was fine. There was no problem with it, but it felt confining to us. My husband is like 6 feet 2 inches, and it felt like it was closing in on him. We also saw the small casita, and it was fine. The units were all well-kept. They mentioned that they have somebody who could come in and put in shelves that drop down, so you can reach the top cabinets, but that would be our cost, and that's above and beyond. However, when you leave, you leave that there."

"My dad is at Westgate Village in Glendale. Since my dad moved in, I have only been there a couple of times to just move his stuff in. He has been in quarantine for 10 days and that just ended yesterday, so I really haven't been able to take him and walk around the facility. Everybody has been very friendly and helpful. The residents there also seem very friendly. His room is great. It is a one bedroom apartment. It has a full kitchen with a sink, microwave, stove, and refrigerator. It is really nice. It has a little balcony and it is up on the second floor. The bathroom is really nice too with a walk-in shower and it is really big. The other thing is the door to the bathroom. If you need a wheelchair and you need a mobile chair to move you around, the door is wide enough to get in and out of. The place looks very nice. Covid was happening so there was nobody in the dining room. They kind of had it blocked off, but the facility is really nice. It looks brand new, everything is clean, and the staff is really friendly. They have a big dining room and then there is a little café. There is a pool in the back too. I've met the activity coordinator and she said they do a lot of stuff, but they did not get into too much these days. I know on the second level they have a movie theater. When I was at the elevator, I saw that they were going to do some kind of bingo. There is a shuttle that takes folks to wherever they need to go such as doctor's appointments. They also have a little exercise room. Everything looks nice, brand-new and clean there. I would say it's good value for the money. They provide 3 meals a day and they do his linens and clean once a week."

"Park Terrace at Greenway was very nice. The big problem was the apartment had been converted from a hotel suite, so they were big, very nice, and redone, but they did not do anything about the closet. The only closet was about as big as the one by my front door to hang your winter coat in. There's no storage, which was a no-no for me. My friend and I didn't like the dining room because it is the hotel's old restaurant and had a whole bunch of little cubby holes. It's not what you usually see in the dining room, and that would not be conducive to meeting people. Everybody would get in their own little cubby hole and never speak to anybody else, and we didn't like that. They did not have a central gathering place, but most homes had a large living area. They're elegant and had a grand piano, but the only communal room that they had was the room set up to watch movies. What I found attractive were the very large suites themselves and also the fact that they had a washer and dryer right in the apartment. For many people who would not care about the amenities that I just mentioned, that would be great."

"My mother is at Fellowship Square, the independent living part. She gets one meal, and she is very happy with that. They have a great dining room, good enough to make her happy, which is awesome. Part of the reason that we chose this particular facility is because my father, who has dementia, is in their assisted memory care, so she just walks right across the apartment to see him. I would surely recommend this to others. "
