I was really excited to be able to put my father in Discovery Commons because he'd be very close to me. I live in Northport. It was very nice. The room was nice, it didn't have any furniture, you had to supply your own furniture. I wasn't prepared for that. It was about the same as the other place I went, it wasn't very large. The dining area seemed on the smallish side, but I think it's just based on the number of people maybe that they can hold for the memory care unit. Everything in there seemed nice. It was clean. I didn't really get to meet anybody other than the woman that is the administrator. We stepped outside. They had an outdoor area that's secure and kind of a really large screened-in porch area. I thought that was a very nice place for them to sit. There were a couple of people there. It's a nice complex, it has a nice Mediterranean feel. I would have liked to have put him there, and that was what I was trying to do, until they told me no. The staff was knowledgeable.

I appreciated Discovery Commons South Biscayne. The girl was very, very nice. They have a lot of activities there. They had art activities. The girl said, 'My door is always open. I appreciate it if residents come in and sit down and chat.' They had few areas of interest. They had a lot of jigsaw puzzles set around, and some jigsaw puzzles were framed and put on the wall. They had a lot of things. I don't think my mom would do any of those things at this stage, but it still was pleasant. I would highly recommend it. But for me, it was at least a 35- to 40-minute drive to go visit her whereas this other place is going to be more of a15- to 20-minute drive. Their rooms were OK. If somebody is trying to find a place for their loved ones, I don't think they would hate that place, I think they would like it. The person who showed me around was quite good. However, we thought that the distance that my mom would have to walk between here and there, would probably be too much for her. It's just a little bit bigger layout. They had this big screened-in porch that they were just in the process of remodeling. They had activities. They were working hard at engaging everybody with something they would like to do.

My mother signed up here. She liked that it was updated, it had a nice large dining room, and the people were very friendly. It's big, and it's modern. It had a huge lanai on the back. The staff during the tour was very nice. They have transportation where they can go out to the stores and they take them to the doctors twice a week or to any doctors' appointments. They have bingo, a hairdresser, a nail salon, they have happy hour with music, and all kinds of things. They worked with us while we're there. They took the carpet out and put hardwood floors. It was very nice.
