"I toured Pasadena Highlands. Janine, our tour guide, was very knowledgeable and informative. She gave us a complete tour. She was open to all our questions. She was new, so there were a few questions that we had that she wasn't sure of. However, she got the information back to us within a day or two. The property is a high rise. The outdoor space was incredible. The garden and the walking path were very peaceful and welcoming. That was nice, even though it was on a major street. Unfortunately, the time that we went there, it was right after the fires and the high winds that we had. Even though a lot of the shrubberies and the trees were thinned out a bit because of the wind, they still helped block the noise from the major street, so that was nice. As for cleanliness, I didn't see anything that stood out. It didn't smell like they were trying to cover up bad smells or anything like that. However, the building was not conducive to my parents being so large. It is also old. I don't know how long it's been there, but I think it's been there a while. There was another assisted living community that burned down, and so they accepted a lot of the residents from that community. We didn't get to see an apartment because they were all booked. The office where we met Janine was a converted apartment that they use now for an office, and I think the size of it was adequate for one person, but not two."

"Ivy Park at San Marino is the nicest in my father's price range that I've seen, and it's also literally up the block from where he lives and where his brother and sister live. It was incredibly clean and well kept. We actually had lunch. My dad didn't want to stay, so they asked if they could pack him a lunch, and he said yes. They packed up their special of the day. We took it home and ate and it was delicious. I like that the menus have a lot of choices. It seems like the food was very fresh. We looked at a one-bedroom and a studio. The one-bedroom was very large. He even said, "Oh, this is larger than what I expected," which was good. There was a lot of staff around. I wish the grounds were bigger. I wish there was more outside space for him to walk around. That's probably the biggest and only really deficit that I noted during our time there. It was excellent. I would live there if I needed it. I've seen a lot in the past and it was definitely the best kept property. My father is not aware of how disabled he is, and his remark afterward was, "Oh, I could see myself living there," which I thought was great. And then he said, "In a couple of years.""

"It is a wonderful facility. It seems very nice and clean. The staff was very informative on the tour. It seems like a good place for senior living if that's what's needed for someone. It was great. I don't have anything negative to say about it. I was just touring looking for the best place for my aunt, but it was a contender. The rooms were nice and spacious. You would have to bring your own furniture, but that wasn't a problem. I thought the rooms were a good space, and they had the option of sharing a room with someone or having your own room, which was nice. And the fact that you could bring your pets was also a plus."

"I love volunteering at Solheim because the care and companionship they provide for their residents is definitely something to note. It really sets them apart from other communities I've volunteered at over the years. Solheim has always been one of the happiest environments I visit. Residents are always busy doing a fun activity like enjoying live music with their friends, going on outings, participating in painting classes, playing various games, and so much more. There is a skilled nursing facility on site (like a hospital setting) so if your loved one needs any kind of rehab after a fall or surgery, they can take care of them right here in the comfort of their own community and with help of the super friendly staff onsite. Staff and residents always seem to have a smile on their face! The cleanliness here is also something to note. Everything I have learned about Solheim over the years I have liked and would recommend this community to any of my family members any day! And everyone else too!"

"Santa Anita is a place where they care. Everyone here is treated with the love, kindness and respect your family is seeking in a retirement community for your loved one. My favorite thing about Santa Anita assisted living is the Activities Department. There is something always going on weather it is BINGO, Arts and Crafts, and ice cream socials on fridays. It is always a fun time with the Activities Department. Santa Anita ALF you feel at home and as if you're amongst family because at Santa Anita we are one big family including staff."

"Henrietta's Leven Oaks was excellent. My mom stayed there and I would recommend them. They went over and beyond the call of duty. It was an old hotel that was converted to a senior living. It's just lovely and it's got beautiful grounds. What my husband and I liked about it was that the residents would all be taken to the dining room for their breakfast, lunch, and dinner. So, they weren't isolated in their rooms, unless they were ill. It was just a very comfortable place, very clean, and the workers were amazing. They also have a board that shows whatever activity was planned for the day, which included painting fingernails, and some speakers or music that comes in. They plan things for Thanksgiving or Halloween. They put up decorations for Christmas with a big, beautiful Christmas tree. So, they did an excellent job with their activities. Although a lot of people were not able to participate in these activities, you would still see people doing puzzles and playing dominoes or whatever they could as their ability permitted."

"Brookdale Monrovia was excellent. They have even invited me back to an event next week. They were wonderful. They have the best staff that you want to meet. When you got there, they had their team there welcoming you. They were the nicest people ever. They're top-notch. We were there at the end of lunch, but they let us have something. It was like a peach cobbler. It wasn't a full meal. I think we mainly had the dessert part of it, but it was really good. The facility was very clean. They were just too pricey for me."

"My mom was a resident of Leisure Vale Assisted Living. She was doing great. She played bingo, activity games, and movies. They have meals three times a day and they had snack meals. They had a happy hour. They had a party. They had Thanksgiving, Easter, and Christmas. They had a big dinner. You have to bring your family, and it's great. There were times they gave the medicine to make sure that they took the medicine right. They make sure they're there. They do dressing if you request it, they do it. They were very compliant with people. They're good people. The food was edible, it was good. It's good for people, like soup or potatoes or Caesar salad. If you don't like what's for dinner, they'll get you something else."

"My friend moved to the assisted living facility of Glen Terra in Glendale. I checked out the place in February when I was looking. I thought that maybe I might find something that I thought was a little more upscale. I spoke with a terrific man there, and he took $1 from me to hold a spot if I needed that. I just thought I was going to just look around, but I eventually concluded that I was just wasting my time. For the amount of money that my friend was going to be paying, this place was the best that I could do for her. I mean that positively, that it was the best, so I went back to this place and we found a spot for my friend, and I moved her in in June. It has just been a very good place for her. It's closer, distance-wise, and certainly less expensive. I think that the care is on par with the other place, which was $3,000 or $4,000 a month more. My friend is very happy there. She has a lovely room which is twice as big for two-thirds of the money that she was paying before. I can't say enough. They are allowing me to choose the menu for my friend. She is lactose intolerant, and there could sometimes be a menu item that she's not sure if it would have milk or any dairy product in it, so I asked the kitchen staff if I could figure out a menu each week, submit it to the kitchen, and just have them serve that to her. She wouldn't have to worry about choosing and about whether the food has any lactose in it. They have been very, very cooperative about that, and I appreciate that. The price is far better than it was in her former place, so I am very pleased with this place. Before my friend had moved in, they called me saying the studio apartment that I was looking at is not going to be available, but that they have a larger apartment with a kitchen area with no stove but a refrigerator, microwave, and a sink. Then there is a living room, and a bedroom with a bath. I said my friend can't really afford more than what we talked about, but they said they will let her have it for what they quoted me. I couldn't believe that, so I went and looked at it. I saw the living room with that little kitchen area attached. The bedroom is not quite a separate room, but almost, and the entry into that room is very adequate for the wheelchair that my friend is in. I think the bedroom itself is larger than what she had in her old place. It's more than I ever ever dreamed that would be possible for her to have. Her living facility there is just better than I could have ever hoped. The staff there is very accommodating, friendly, and cooperative. They're also very helpful. It's just a nice staff to have taking care of my friend. I think the food is very good, and the variety of it is great. In her old place, it was like a five-star restaurant. Here, it isn't quite that. It's more homey, and my friend appreciates and enjoys the hominess. At her old place, they have big cloth napkins, but here they have nice paper napkins. That's silly, but that's kind of how I'm rating it. The food is very good, and my friend has never had any complaints. Her room is terrific. I could never, ever have afforded that anywhere else. There is one thing only, and it's that in the hallway from the front door to her apartment, and then also from the entryway to the dining room, there is a bit of an incline. It's covered with carpet, so it's nothing that anybody would slip on, but my friend is in a wheelchair and she can't quite do that by herself. There's always a lot of staff around, though. All she has to do is ask someone to get her up the little incline. I don't want to make it sound like it's a mountain because it isn't, but it's enough of an incline that she cannot get up and down. They said that's unfortunately the way it is, but it has certainly not deterred my friend from getting where she wants to go, so it's fine. But taking that little thing into consideration with everything else that is good for her, I think everything else far outweighs that."

"We toured Sparr Heights Estates Senior Living. They have an activity calendar with things scheduled all day long. They get the residents to the activities. The day I toured, they had bingo, an art project, and a singing session. They had musicians come in with cellos that played the concerts for them, so I'm very impressed. They have some facility pets there that they bring around for the residents. I brought my three teenage children with me and we've been there for five hours, and my kids loved it. Linda was so accommodating, and with different personal issues going on with each family and their needs, she was able to exhaust how they could help with all of that, and I was impressed. We didn't eat there but while we were there, Linda had snacks brought in for my kids. The other thing that is special about this place is, that other places have locked-up hours that you can't go visit. At Sparr Heights, you can visit 24 hours a day. If I wanted to check in at 3 a.m. I could and I'm allowed to spend the night if I want. I'm just amazed. It's such an open-door policy. They're like completely transparent on everything there. I have been to facilities that look more high-class than this one. This facility, it's like you don't walk into it thinking it's a five-star hotel, it's a bit more homey."

"A couple of weeks ago, I visited Hollenbeck Palms in Los Angeles and I like that very much. They have a chapel which is unique. The location is not ideal as the surrounding area is not exactly high class but I still really like it. It's the best out of every place that I have visited so far. The people were very friendly. I was able to meet a number of residents and I was impressed by how friendly they were. I only met one staff member and she was very helpful. I would rate her very highly. I probably need to say though that all I can afford at Hollenback is a studio apartment because if you're going to get a 1-bedroom, there's a substantial buy-in of over $200,000. That is a bit of a difficulty for me. I was also impressed by the food. I had lunch there with some nice people. The food was the best of all that I have had and I had lunch at several places I visited. They had the one thing the others did not have and that's the chapel. That appeals very much to me."

"Hollywood Hills is a wonderful facility. Mom is quite comfortable with it. We, as a family, are comfortable with the way they take care of her, the atmosphere there, and the facility as a whole, like the physical therapy, the exercises, the meal plans, everything that they have to offer. We just love it. The memory care staff is wonderful. They are very caring, very understanding, and very patient. They are very specific to the needs of each person. Mom has a low sodium diet and they're very attentive to making sure that her meals are like that, but still very tasty, because she's an extremely picky eater. They have daily movies, they do field trips on Fridays, live music on Tuesdays, exercises every day during the week, lots of walking, and lots of communication with other residents and staff. Everything is pricey. You get what you pay for is true to form."

"My friend has moved into Ivy Park at Burbank. It was a great experience from the beginning. The parking was easy and accessible to the main lobby. When we got to the main lobby, a welcome sign welcomed us for the tour. We had a wonderful tour. It was very informative about just the general property. The property itself was clean and bright. What impressed me was that they were all well-groomed and pleasant, and they weren't pandering. You knew they were health care professionals that cared and tried to take an interest in the person. That's what meant a lot to me. So I was very impressed with that. The place itself was beautiful. The model we saw that became my friend's studio apartment was beautiful, too. The place was newly renovated. They have new appliances and new cabinets. Just cheerful and wonderful. I can't say enough about Ivy Park. I think their services are fine. My friend just came out of the hospital, but I know that she is getting all the services there at Ivy Park. She's getting her medications managed, she's getting great meals, and today, physical therapy was coming up. We met the activities director, and there are activities, but my friend is not able to participate at this time. But I know the activities are great."

"I got my dad into Evergreen Retirement Residence. So far, it's a great location. They have been attentive to his needs. I have nothing bad to say about them. They have an in-house doctor that comes in and takes care of them, so you don't need to send them away for a doctor. They have physical therapy. It's great. His room is nice. The staff is great. So far, he has no complaints about the food. He gets 24-hour care there, so it's full care. I have no complaints. They have tons of stuff. They have a dining room and a separate recreation area where they have a pool table. They constantly have things going on. They don't eat in a room. They can if they want, but they go to the dining room and intermix, and they have all kinds of activities throughout the day and exercise classes and all that stuff, so that's great."
