I live in Laguna Woods Village. I have a 75-pound dog and they're allowing my dog to live here, but I have to pay $500 extra every month for my dog to live here with me, and I'm not happy about that. It's very nice living here. People on the whole are friendly and happy to help. There are people from age 55 all the way up to people who need to have a nurse walk them every day. So it's all different levels of living here, but it's very nice. We have all kinds of activities. They have a swimming pool and tennis courts. There's everything that you would want. I like the fact that they have an indoor pool and outdoor pool. I live in a two-bedroom. The configuration of this one is different. I have a pet, and so I have to have two bedrooms no matter where I live, and the rent here is not cheap. It is not very safe living here. I have to put all kinds of locks on my door because it's right near the entrance. It's a gated community, but people can lie and say who they are and they're not who they are. And they get through the gate and then they can go on and terrorize people if they want. I have to put two locks on my door because I'm right near the gate and the entrance, so I don't like living here. I used to live over in Gate 9 where it was safer, where you had some distance between the entrance and where people live, but it's not so here. I was forced to move here because my landlady needed the apartment for her sister to move in. I am not happy living here, but we have security. I cannot say there's no security. If somebody is bothering you, you call security, and they take care of it. And the security is very good here, I have to say that. It's pretty nice living here. They take care of the grounds. The amenities are very nice. They're very good at having the lawns mowed and everything taken care of, so Laguna Woods looks nice all the time. It's not slovenly taken care of. They're very mindful of how they take care of this place. Sometimes the staff are a bit indifferent, but on the whole, if you have a problem, security comes right away, or you could go to the office and report whatever you want to report. Sometimes they come right away, and sometimes they don't. If you have a security complaint, you call, and within five to ten minutes they come to your house to take care of it, so they don't leave you in the lurch if you have a valid complaint about something. The buildings and the maintenance are very good. They keep up the main very nice. They have people working all the time, and they're nice people. They keep the grounds up and whatever, and they do a very nice job. There's management that tells them what to do, how to do it, so forth and so on. Everything is kept very nicely. There are a lot of activities. They have an art room. If you like to paint, you can go there and paint. They have a lot of art classes here. If you want to learn how to paint faces or if you want to learn how to paint anatomy, they have painting classes. They have people that volunteer their time and teach art in the art room. Whatever you want to learn, there's a teacher and a facility where you can go to learn how to do it. They have all kinds of dancing that you could learn, which is very nice.

My mom and I have been living here at Laguna Woods Village for 5 years now. What I like most about it is it's safe. It's a gated community. It has a lot of activities and clubs. It's got quite a few amenities. It's got a lot of walking trails and it's a park-like setting. The outside of the homes is aged. It was built, I think, in the 1960's. The average age of the residents is 80. So, if you're looking for an active community and you're in your 60s, this place is too old for you. The people here are very nice, but they're very old. I don't like the costs associated with the facility. HOAs are very expensive. I'm almost paying close to $1,000 for a thousand-square foot. My husband plays golf 3 to 4 times a week. It's got a huge Pickleball court and lawn bowling. It's got over 100+ clubs that you can join. They do have a bus service for the residents, and there's a very large hospital located right outside the gate. There are multiple discounts associated that I don't utilize too much. There are hotels in the area that if you tell them you're a Laguna Woods resident, you get a substantial discount. There are 2 gyms, but the equipment isn't the greatest. It is a golf cart community. It's deceiving when it says 55 and older when the average age is 80. So, it's a very old community. You pay maintenance fees and their maintenance people don't do a very good job. Gardening and maintenance are terrible and you pay a hefty amount of HOA for that service. They do have a nice restaurant here up in Laguna Woods and the food is tasty. They've got a full bar there. They keep their pools beautifully manicured. They're open year-round and they're heated.

Heaven on Earth!! Only One Big Problem! The HOA is much much too high and the property needs a much better gardening device. From the outside it looks very unkept but our 2 plus 2 is our Forever Home! Absolutely the BEST BUY in Orange County!!!

Horrible place to live, HOA people are a racket, the cable company is medieval at best, everything is outdated, buildings are crumbling and all homes have popcorn ceilings, really they trap you, I am 56 years old and I regret living here every day, can't wait to sell my home, horrible service, horrible landscaping, horrible place to live.

Let me give a little background. Laguna Woods Village (originally known as Leisure world, but incorporated as city a few years ago to de-stigmatize the community.) is a gated senior community . On the surface it is a well maintained and visually attractive community. Most of the homes were built in the late 60s or 70s and from my experience were built rather cheaply. If you enter into a renovation on a unit you will find asbestos, aluminum wiring (a fire hazard) ancient electric radiant heating, haphazard plumbing where you can't turn off a water main to a unit without shutting everything off for the entire building. Needless to say renovations are expensive. However the main difficulty of living in Laguna woods is Golden Rain Foundation (or GRF) which is the HOA. (Apparently the they were never cued into what "Golden Rain" means). If you live at Laguna woods GRF runs your life and your pocketbook. Many of us refer to them as the "gestapo" as they rule the community with an iron fist. In general you are treated as if you are a child in school. Download GRFs schedule of fees to get an idea. In most communities you need a building permit to perform minor alterations, here you not only have that but you have to satisfy GRF who is involved with everything and charges very expensive fees. Want to add a peep hole you your front door. $50 inspection fee. Need to change your water heater, that will be $1500 and only approved contractors are allowed. But the real crime is that GRF has ruined property values. You see, GRF must approve any new owner.. and requires that owner to have a specific income and assets that are at least 3X the purchase price. So to buy a $500K home you need $1.5M in assets. This has collapsed the value of property because it limits the buyes. Anyway buy at your own risk and salute GRF.
