I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My sister was placed at Whitney Oaks Care Center. It's a very nice place. I liked that when I first came in the door you must sign in. There's a machine and you have to sign in and put the person's name. Then I talked to the receptionist at the front desk, and they directed me to my sister's room and showed me where she was. I went in there and I talked to my sister. I also got a little look at the area, and where she was at is very clean and neat. The staff there are very nice, and they're concerned. They contact me whenever there's a question or something that they need to know as far as information regarding my sister. They inform me of what's taking place, like any type of medical procedure or whatever. So they're very good with those. The building is very nice, too. They have a nice big area with a few benches out there where you can get sunlight. It's very spacious outside. They have parking at the back and on the side of the building. My son took me there, we parked in the back, and it was a nice little walk from where we parked to get to the front.

I am/was a resident of this facility

My brother is in Whitney Oaks Care Center, which is a small community. I like the staff, particularly the physical therapy and occupational therapy staff. There’s a variety of CAN levels of care; some are very good, some are average, but a small amount of them are not good, especially the night shift. The food is really good. They have a dietician and individualize each patient. The meal time could be arranged to depend on whether the resident would want to go to the dining room or if he’d have it in his room. They have a variety of activities, but they keep repeating themselves and don’t individualize activities.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My 91yo father-in-law came to Whitney Oaks for post surgical rehab. He developed an infection ignored by doctors and staff and after three weeks a visitor— NOT staff — noticed he was in distress. He was rushed to hospital in Septic shock from a UTI and close to death. Please! Do not send a loved one to this nightmare of a facility.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I think the care is OK, at least my brother said so, but trying to reach someone by phone is a nightmare. First get someone while on hold, then transfer to someone else, all the time on hold, ask for the room, told one time that there are phones in the room, told the next time that there are portable phones and someone has to walk to the room. I do not understand why calls are not directed to the rooms. If someone is out of their room, it will ring and nobody will answer of course, but one shouldn't have to jump through all those hoops to contact their relative since phone calls are a connection that the people in these facilities need. The on hold time tells about all the modern conveniences that Whitney Oaks offers, but the phone system is ghastly and should be upgraded to somebody calls the switchboard, asks for the room number, and is put through to the room. It's not rocket science.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My dad (85 yo) was sent here for ehab from a stroke, transfer from VA hospital. Pre-approved for 51 days with VA/Medicare, but WOCC trying to discharge him after only 21 days even tho his condition has barely improved. Pushing our family to move him prematurely to LTC facility even tho his doctors disagree. Don't put your family through this!

My sister was in Whitney Oaks but I didn’t like it as it was too medical. They were also understaffed. I really didn’t enjoy being there.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

Whitney Oaks Care Center was generally pleasant. The staff in these places is not very attentive and is not proactive in helping with specific needs. They were actually better than some of the others. But if I was not there advocating for her, she wasn't getting the help that she needed or wanted. It was mainly in their convenience and whatever fit the schedule type of a thing. They need to improve their responsiveness. It's not just the time responsiveness but also the responsiveness to the need. My mom was taking a lot of medication which caused her nausea, so she wasn't able to eat. They called saying she is refusing to eat. The reason is because they didn't listen and try to change her medications to help her. They just kept forcing it. It was cleaner than others though. I didn't notice anything that stood out there. There is definitely an odor, but I guess it was just the nature of the building.

I am a friend or relative of resident

My grandmother stayed here for a little under a week. We had to get her out as soon as possible because this place was so awful. They do not control the temperature and she was roasting the entire stay. They also allowed her roommate full dictation of the TV, so my grandmother was not able to watch a single program and even after we asked if they could mediate the situation they never took action. We finally were able to get her a different room because the situation was so awful. Flies everywhere and slow help. She was having trouble moving and her room was very cramped, making it impossible for her to reach the bathroom. I would never have anyone I cared for stay here again.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

While the facilities were attractive and clean, I was not happy with my mother's experience as a resident at this facility in 1998. She had recently been discharged from Kaiser Permanente as an outpatient after an acute experience with her emphysema. She was somewhat disoriented and frail at the time but staff did not raise her bed rails at night. As a result, when she got up unattended to use the bathroom late one night, she fell and broke one of her ribs. (Also, they had her rooming with an Alzheimer's patient which was depressing to her; the woman disturbed her sleep since she was, understandably, confused and upset.)
