What to Consider About Assisted Living in Spokane

The Aging and Long-Term Support Administration regulates and monitors all long-term care communities in Washington, including assisted living facilities. Facilities are required to comply with all local, state and federal rules and regulations regarding their operations. The agency maintains an online portal for registering complaints of abuse, neglect or exploitation of residents of these facilities.

  • Even though Washington State has an overall cost of living that is higher than the national average, the cost of living in Spokane is lower than both the national and state average. 
  • Spokane’s property and violent crime rates are higher than the national averages. Fortunately, city leaders are addressing high property crime rates with efforts that show downward trends. 
  • Spokane offers a four-season climate with warm, pleasant summers and less rain than the national average. However, winters are cold throughout the Spokane Valley, with lows dipping into the 20s in January. Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Spokane

<p xml:lang=”EN-US”>Low-income seniors living in Spokane can receive benefits that can help pay for assisted living from Apple Health, Washington’s Medicaid provider, through two different programs: the Medicaid Personal Care Program and the Community First Choice Option. Additionally, eligible seniors can apply to receive a cash benefit through Supplemental Security Income – Category G, which can be used to help pay for assisted living.

Aging & Long Term Care of Eastern Washington serves as the Area Aging on Aging for Spokane and surrounding communities. Seniors can attend balance workshops designed to minimize the risk of slip-and-fall accidents, receive wellness screenings and participate in diabetes management seminars. The agency also administers the Long-Term Care Ombudsman program, which provides residents of long-term care facilities and their loved ones with free, confidential complaint investigation and resolution services.

Spokane seniors looking for ways to keep busy can find plenty of opportunities at the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Spokane County. Participants may be eligible for reimbursement for transportation costs and supplementary insurance. Residents of Spokane who are aged 65 and over can get reduced fares from the Spokane Transit Authority. Applicants must present proof of age when they apply. Those under 65 who have qualifying disabilities may be able to receive reduced fares with documentation of qualifying disabilities from their primary health care provider, Medicare or Social Security. Those approved for the fares receive a Reduced Fare Photo ID Card that they must carry with them when using the transit service.
