  • With three locations across the city, Christus Sphon is the largest hospital system serving Corpus Christi. U.S. News and World Report rated this hospital as “High Performing” in several disorders and procedures. It provides a full range of surgical, urgent care, imaging and telehealth services, which allows seniors to talk to a doctor without leaving their home.
  • Residents can ride the Corpus Christi Regional Transit Authority bus system to many destinations throughout the city. It offers a reduced-fare pass for people over 60, Medicare members and those with disabilities. All buses are equipped with wheelchair lifts and ramps.
  • Corpus Christi’s cost-of-living index is 83.1, measured against the U.S. average index of 100. Median home prices are quite low compared to the state and national averages, and residents pay less for groceries (92.1) and transportation (79.7). Health care (101.1) and utilities (101.1) are slightly more expensive, though.
  • Texas does not charge income tax, which means that Social Security benefits and other kinds of retirement income aren’t taxed. However, sales taxes can be fairly high. Corpus Christi has a sales tax rate of 8.25%.
  • Corpus Christi has very comfortable winter weather, with zero inches of snowfall annually and an average low of 48 degrees in January. Temperatures reach an average high of 93 degrees in July, and the city gets 223 days of sunshine per year compared to the national average of 205.
  • The city’s residents can enjoy excellent air quality, making it a good place to live for seniors with respiratory illnesses. Its air quality index is 81 out of 100 (national average is 58). Water quality is also high with an index of 77 (national average is 51).
  • Property and violent crime rates are higher than the state average, which makes Corpus Christi safer than only 6% of other U.S. cities. Crime is generally higher in neighborhoods closer to the bay. The Tierra Grande area, located on the south side of the city, has lower crime overall.
