"My mom was in the Memory Care Unit at Maplewood for five months after having been at another nursing facility for three years. What a difference in the care she received! Maplewood embraced her the moment she walked through the door until the end of her life. They encouraged her to participate in activities, taking her on the bus to the Cleveland Aquarium, the Nautica Queen, the County fair, Deer Park and other places. She went from sitting in her room (at the other facility) to fully participating in life. She began smiling and eating once again. She was well-taken care of, both physically and mentally, and the staff at Maplewood treated her with kindness and respect. No facility can provide the same amount/type of care a family can, but Maplewood comes close."

"Wow! This community was spectacular! Being brand new, everything is top notch! Atmosphere was calm yet spirited! The most beautiful community I've been to yet! The food was prepared by a chef with top skills in presentation and taste! The staff were all welcoming and genuine. I left feeling renewed and hopeful. Prices were lower than I would ever expected for such an amazing location! Definitely top of my list!"

"We went to Vitalia Mentor for a tour. It is beautiful. However, we are the first generation of not being blue collar. We are kind of in the middle of the middle class, and the Vitalia Mentor was a little bit snooty. It just felt like you didn't want to touch anything. It was set up beautifully. They emphasized that they had food available all the time. But, it didn't feel like my mom, who grew up on a farm, was going to fit in there. Nevertheless, I could see friends of mine bringing their parents to live there in a heartbeat. It's very nice. It is just not suitable for Mom. The building is only three years old, but it is not homey. The lady who did the tour was very friendly and very nice. She listened to Mom really well. We only saw one apartment because I don't think there were any empty units. There is also no place to sit outside there for the residents. The amenities were the same. They had a big theater set up to watch movies, which was nice. A laundry room is available, like the other place. They have a small gym. The staff didn't really say too much about the activities, which is one of the main reasons we want to move my mom where she is around other people. However, there were more people in the hallways and residents to say hello to or that kind of thing at Vitalia Mentor than there were at the other place. They have a whole kitchen thing available with all kinds of food, and it's like being at home. The room was considerably smaller than the other place, and maybe that was because somebody was living there; it wasn't just staged, and so therefore he had more stuff in there, so that could be. It turns out that they were also out of our price range. The staff member who gave the tour was pretty tuned in; she did a good job."

"The Preserve at Mentor Ridge is located right off the highway of Route 90, so it was convenient if you were coming off the highway. It was in a very nice area. It was a nice facility, very well-kept, and clean. It was a newer building. They had elevators. I liked the fact that they were very accommodating for my dad. My dad had lots of ailments and a lot of places wouldn't accept him. They said that they would be able to most likely deal with him. They were also located next to another rehabilitation center, where they offered more extensive medical care. For example, if somebody needed to have an IV drip of some sort, they would send them next door for that medical care. They have walk-in showers with grab bars and benches. The rooms were unfurnished. It had a small appliance, like a dishwasher. When I visited, they had activities going on. There was a group that had a leader doing some sort of activity. The staff was very attentive. She was willing to just sit and listen to as much as I wanted to tell her. There was a courtyard, where they had different get-togethers."

"My Uncle was a long term resident in this facility. He started in the Assisted Living section and as his dementia progressed he eventually moved to Memory Care. I visited him several times a week over the years that he lived there. This was an Emeritus facility when he moved in , and there were problems with keeping him clean and with theft. When Brookdale assumed ownership there was great improvement. His room was spacious and clean, he was engaged in activities and he was content. Staff was very caring. They informed me always when he had an incident and had him checked over by a nurse, and also by hospice staff. As time went on he refused food, but they kept ensure on hand for him and enjoyed his "chocolate milk." He felt secure and safe there. He must have been difficult at times as he would walk the halls at night, sometimes all night, and could get very stubborn and feisty. As a family member I felt that I was listened to, and most of the "problems" did not impact his overall care. There were some issues about laundry but those were resolved. He enjoyed the musical programs and later, just bouncing balloons around the living area with other residents. He also enjoyed visits with family and on occasion would sit and reminisce about the theater, or other places he'd been. "

"I was lucky enough to find an opening when my Dad needed 24/7 care. The staff was caring, kind and available at all times. His room was homey, clean and comfortable. He had his own bathroom which was spotless. I had 24 hour visits and was neverdisappointed with his care "

"My uncle moved to Maple Ridge Senior Living. I like the family atmosphere, the kindness, and the welcoming staff. They are willing to accept my uncle's limitations and do what they can to help him get well. I love the activities that they offer and we love the cottage setting. You can tell that they picked their staff very carefully. I haven't tried the food but the meals are very nutritious and well balanced. When you walk in the doors, you hear beautiful piano music playing, and it's just a beautiful facility. Everything's brand new and the furniture is new. It's a beautiful cottage and the grounds are gorgeous. The flowers are blossoming. They have a pretty gazebo. They said that in the summertime they do concerts outside for the residents. They have the rocking chairs out for them to sit in the beautiful weather. I also like the fact that they can do his laundry. It's a superb care that he's getting."

"One of the places I looked at is The Fairways and it's a very nice place. The only thing I can say about this place is that when you go there and go into the care area, ask the people there where are the showers. They provide one shower for 30 people. When they are ready for their shower, they have a code on the door and the nurse has to press the code and the door opens to the shower room and the resident goes on with the nurse. The nurse helps with their bath or shower. "

"I loved what I saw in Hamlet at Chagrin Falls. I saw people actually doing stuff, meaning the actual residents. I saw them actually participating in programs, participating in therapy, getting out in the atrium, waving at people as they walked by their room. There is an area where the carpet has split in a main area, which especially for those who have walkers or have a hard time walking because, like my stepmom, have Parkinson's. Not having that taken care of immediately to me is a safety concern. But as far as what I saw, and the friendliness, not just of the staff, of the residents that were there, kind of let me know that the residents that live there actually are extremely happy with being there. I don't know if it's also because it's a wooded environment, it's a nice tucked away little place that's kind of in nature, which is pretty nice. So it's a nice place. I actually like it. We had a receptionist when we came through, and I don't know if it was due to race, but as soon as we came through, she said, "Oh, are you the aides?" And we're like, "No, we're here to tour the facility," so just being conscientious of, you know, each person that comes to the door as a person and, you know, just checking in with them. "Hello, how may I help you? What can I help you with?" versus, are you the aides? So that was one of the things that actually was something that my younger sister kind of was a little offended by. We saw one unit that was completely done, the other one wasn't. We were told initially that someone had just moved out and the family was still getting a few things out, but they wanted us to be able to see the unit just because of the fact that it would be available. If that was a unit that they chose to take, the parents could pick their colors, decide if they want flooring or if they want carpeting or whatever would work for them. So actually, it was a very nice unit, and actually it wasn't horrible for someone just moving out. It wasn't bad. We were given a little treat, which was really good. It was kind of like a dessert type of treat, so that was nice, and something to drink. "

"Vitalia Highland Heights is a brand-new facility. They just opened. I was very impressed with the independent living quarters that they offered. There were two spaces available. There are two bedrooms with a nice large living area and a kitchen that has everything. I know that if I wanted to, I could cook and bake there. There's a seating area in the kitchen. You don't have to have a dining room table, but it's big enough that you could have people sit down there on both sides. You could probably get maybe 4 or 5 people sitting in this area. They have beautiful two bathrooms that are bigger than what I'm living in right now. They have a washer and dryer, which is very important to me. The price is OK. I think they want $4005 or somewhere around there, maybe close to $5000 a month. They offer a lot of bus trips and typical things. They have a pool. They have everything. They have invited me twice now to come for lunch and their food is excellent. If you have a car, they have a covered parking area and that's $75 a month. That's high, and all it does is that there's a parking area where everybody parked right next to each other. You just have a roof over the outdoors. It's not an enclosed garage."

"I toured Cedar Living at Mayfield Heights. The facility was nice and clean, and it was a small community, which I appreciated. The rooms were not too large, which would be very good for my mom. They were simple rooms where anyone could be monitored very easily. It had a nice, roomy, public area for residents to dine, or enjoy activities. It was a pleasure speaking with the administrator. It was more like a home setting. You have a great room for activities, an open format for dining, and a fireplace. It was simple, but very nice, modern, and they had a nice courtyard where residents could walk around, enjoy the gardens, and sunshine. And they had a very good ratio of staff to residents. The staff seemed to be very attentive to the residents. You could see what everyone was doing, and that was good."

"I looked at The Villas at King David. It was a beautiful facility. They had very nice spacious suites. I liked everything about it; it was just too far away from family for me. But they have beautiful rooms. They supply refrigerators and microwaves. They have a laundry service, and they have a barber there. They have everything you need. The staff who gave the tour was very friendly and very nice. She explained everything well. With the questions I asked, she was very patient with me. She did a good job showing me everything. I even sat down and ate lunch with her, and the food was good. The building itself was very nice and very clean."
