I checked out six places before I chose one for my mom. One of them was the American House Elmwood. She was on the waitlist there for a 1-bedroom, but they told her it would be up to a year. We were going to wait until January to move her but things got kind of not good so I needed to find a place sooner. We really liked Elmwood, but they just didn’t have space. Their studios are really tiny, like a hotel room. I knew my mom wouldn’t go for that. We liked them but we couldn’t wait for the 1-bedroom to be available.
We saw both the assisted living and memory care but we were looking for assisted living for my mom. Their actual apartments and stuff were just so tiny.
We only saw the tour person because we had to go in on a Friday evening. I didn’t get to see them interacting with people. All the other tours I had, I was able to do during the day when a lot was going on. Being that this tour was on a Friday evening, we didn’t see any other staff at all, except for the tour person.
We saw them back in August so it’s been quite a while but I think they had a library. Of course, they had a dining room too. It’s a much smaller place, so they didn’t have as many amenities. The place was very clean but it was a little older and a little more worn.

We toured American House Stone. The appearance is nice. They had a sitting area, and the dining room was all set up for people to go down and eat. I’m thinking, ‘Wow, this is nice. I could move in.’ And then we were greeted by the lady who was taking us on a tour. Everything we saw was nice and clean. Everybody who we came in contact with was very friendly. They showed us a studio and a one-bedroom. The studio was nice, we just thought it was a little small because it had a living area and a bedroom area together and then a little thing for a kitchen. Then she showed us a one-bedroom, which we both liked. It had a separate bedroom, a separate living room, and a separate kitchen, and we thought that that was very nice. I thought it was a very nice place, but our situation right now is money.
When we walked through the dining room, it was set up and I thought, ‘Well, this is nice,’ and it would be nice because it was kind of like they would get the residents out of the room and they would come down there and they would have contact with other people, and I just thought, ‘Well, that’s kind of a nice situation.’ The staff who assisted us was very pleasant and very nice. She answered any questions that we had. She was very helpful. The facility looked very clean, and it didn’t smell.

If I could rate a zero I would. We had several issues and tried to address them with both management and corporate. There were never any resolutions offered, only “I’m sorry, that should not have happened”. Our expressing our concerns only created a tense situation. The last incident left us concerned for our loved one’s safety, so we moved them out. I feel sorry for the few caregivers there that do an excellent job. They are over worked. Staff turnover is high, and new staff are not properly trained. This place looks pretty on the outside, but look very closely especially during off hours.

We’re getting ready to move my in-laws to Waltonwood Senior Community. We’re not happy with it, the rooms were really small but we have to move them somewhere. But the care we’re seeing when we were there, and our tour was good, so that was the main feature why we went to this place. We chose them because of the response and the care. The staff was very professional, very friendly and outgoing towards all the people there. It’s older and outdated, but they’re slowly updating the rooms available, so they’re making improvements as they go. The rooms are smaller than what we like, but the care is what matters. They have crafts and they have activities for all people. They have snacks, they have movie rooms, they have common areas and they have an activities director like everybody else. It’s a smaller community, with only 40 people in the community, so it’s more personalized. It’s located in an upper-end, well-maintained neighborhood. Everybody’s nice.

Sunrise of Bloomfield is a beautiful place. They seem to have everything. They have whatever kind of care your loved one needs, whether the basics or all the way up to the most. They seem to be able to do that there. I would love to have a loved one in there, but it was just way too expensive for my mom. It was a pricing issue. It was a quick tour. Because of COVID and everything, people kind of want you in and out. I kind of went to certain spots of the place, and that was it. They could accommodate any level of care that your loved one needed. They have a personal chef. She went through the menu with me, and it looked very wonderful.
The care seems to be there. It seems like there’s always something going on. If your loved one needs any type of occupational therapy or physical therapy, they have it. It is like a one-stop place to have everything done to your loved one. It’s almost like a fancy hotel. It was very nice and very clean. They have a lot there for even the littlest things. In their private rooms, they had a pull cord by the bed in case someone needs something. They can easily get to someone when needed.
