Cottonwood is a small city in Arizona that’s a little more than an hour southwest of Flagstaff. It’s home to just over 12,253 residents, more than 27% of whom are seniors aged 65 and older. The city features all the charm of a small town along with many big-city amenities, including world-class healthcare facilities like Northern Arizona Healthcare, which is open for emergencies 24 hours a day. This, along with an average cost of living, is likely why so many older adults like to call Cottonwood home.
Many seniors in Cottonwood and throughout the U.S. reside in assisted living facilities. These communities offer a supportive living environment, with caregivers who help with daily tasks and amenities such as meals, housekeeping, and transportation. Assisted living is a good option for seniors who can’t live independently but don’t require 24-hour medical attention, such as what’s provided in nursing homes. Seniors in Cottonwood pay an average of $4,450 per month for assisted living, which is $550 more than Arizona’s median cost.
This guide provides basic information about assisted living in Cottonwood and its average costs, as well as benefits and drawbacks of retiring here and free local resources that can help seniors.

I’m at Cottonwood Village. It’s going real well. My birthday is in July, so we had a birthday lunch for all those having birthdays in July. They had decorations on the tables and everything. It was just really, really nice. The food here is good. They’re very concerned, caring and pay attention and notice when anybody’s missing. Like, I went for birthday lunch with my family and I didn’t go to lunch in the dining hall and I was missed and they sent someone to check on me to be sure I was OK. So, next time I’ll know better. I’ll know enough to tell them I won’t be in the dining hall that day.
We have an exercise class every morning, they have a salon, they do hair and they trim toenails, but they don’t do pedicures or manicures. There’s something going on all the time. Any special days, like 4th of July, we are dressed in red, white and blue and have a barbecue. They have different games every day, they have a walking club, and you can go to church. Sometimes, they serve ice cream in the afternoon. They play bingo and dominoes and they have devotions. You can choose what you want, but I just wanted a small space. I have an efficiency.
My family researched and went around all the places in Cottonwood that did assisted living and checked them out very thoroughly, and they found this one to be the best. The staff is very involved with everything. I don’t have any complaints. I think the main problem anywhere in the country is lack of staff, so that’s possible here as well. They’re quite involved in everything, like the manager came to our birthday lunch today. He wouldn’t have to do that for half a dozen people having a birthday during the month. I wouldn’t think so anyway, but he came to lunch and had lunch with us.
They’ve got almost constant activities of some type all day. On a Friday, they have devotions, piano, a movie, a game, gossip, and a walking club. That’s from 9 to 6:30. They do the walking club late in the day. I personally would like a salon or a person that will do toenails. They’ll cut your toenails, but they don’t do a pedicure.

My Mother has Parkinson’s, is on hospice, and has lived at Carefree for over a year. Her financial situation requires that she share a room with another resident. The rooms are very nice and clean. There is a wonderful walk-out atrium with greenery, flowers, and bird-feeders. The food is good, and they have many activities, and bring in some musical entertainment. I visit once or twice a week. This is my Mom’s 3rd Assisted Living Residence in the Verde Valley, and she recently called it "home" – (this is a big deal, as she can be critical!) I believe that the caregiving staff, and owner involvement is what sets Carefree apart. This is a small facility with less staff turn-over than I have experienced elsewhere. The facility is adequately staffed, and caregivers are friendly and attentive to the residents. The owner is responsive, and his concern for the residents and staff is evident. I feel good when I visit – I look forward to seeing Mom, and the staff! I recommend Carefree, especially for those who need quite a bit of physical assistance. Thank you to everyone at Carefree – I know your job is difficult, and I am grateful to all of you.

The staff members were very interested in what my mother-in-law would like. They want to make sure they include her in the type of activities that she might like to do, or there would be something she would do alone.
The room was a good size for my mother-in-law. She’s got a small kitchenette, a small dining table, and an area for her sofa chair and entertainment. Behind that is the actual bed place. It’s sectioned off into specific areas and things you would do in that place. The staff was very nice and helpful. The facility was very nice, clean, and spacious. It’s got a lot of live plants. It’s very good for its value.

Even though I’m not in good shape, I’m very social, and the people there were pretty much bedridden. But it was a very nice facility. It was clean, and it looked great. The room was a studio and there were two people in it, and that didn’t work for me because I have to have a single room. All the staff showed me were shared rooms, and I said, ‘Don’t you have private rooms,’ and she said, no. I saw a library, but I have more books in my suitcase than they had in the library. It was nice, but everything about it was too small.

Mom had a difficult time making the transition from her home to a facility and everyone worked with her to make this transition go as smoothly as possible. It helps that Shiloh is a warm and friendly home environment. Shiloh has won the Prescott Valley award for best assisted living group home facility year after year and for good reason; everyone there truly cares. Roxy, the dog, is an added benefit as the residents and their visiting family members enjoy playing fetch and petting this amazing, angel of a dog. Star, the owner, is a fantastic cook and the residents enjoy healthy, home cooked meals, Italian style. I highly recommend Shiloh for high quality care and a warm, home environment.

The other thing I didn’t care for, is they’re not running their activities except for three or four due to COVID. You didn’t see people out and about, for the most part, you saw a person here or here. The amenities were good, but they weren’t really operational like their dining room, and I felt like it needed some upgrading. The rooms seemed to be fine, but with fewer options. The lady that held the tour was very good. It was a very good tour, and it’s really close to us. They’re located far from medical facilities, and that was a big factor. They had menu-style dining, and their chef is award-winning.
