My brother-in-law has moved into Sunrise of North Scottsdale. It seems like everything is very acceptable. The food in the restaurant is good. The staff there is very friendly. He has a studio. It has a shower, toilet, sink, refrigerator, and microwave. It doesn't have a full kitchen because he has three meals a day provided. They have activities on an ongoing basis, like physical activities, mental challenges, and movies. They also have an exercise room, walking paths, a billiards table, and entertainment regularly. Everything is clean and up-to-date. Economically, it fits our needs.

About Sunrise of North Scottsdale in Scottsdale, Arizona
Two decades ago, Patricia Will and her family searched for the best memory care community for her mother-in-law. During that search, she discovered a passion for assisted living and Alzheimers care. That discovery led to the founding of the first Sunrise and its dementia-specific programs, with the goal of reaching the highest standards in senior care. Today, the level of assisted living and Alzheimers care provided at Sunrise of North Scottsdale exemplifies that mission.
Facilities and Amenities
Sunrise of North Scottsdale is a 138-unit assisted living community that includes a secured Alzheimers wing with 25 private apartments. Each wing of the three-story building is decorated with one of four themes: Western, Elephant, Beach or Arizona. All assisted living units include a private bathroom with shower, closet and storage space, basic cable TV and a small kitchen with a full-size refrigerator and microwave.
Sunrise of North Scottsdale residents have full access to the communitys common areas and courtyards, which include an outdoor dining patio, garden terrace, heated swimming pool and high-speed Internet access at the Center for Learning. The communitys Center for Life Enhancement is supervised by a licensed physical therapist who designs customized exercises for each resident in the program. Residents can choose from a variety of breakfast, lunch and dinner menu items prepared by experienced chefs in Josephines Kitchen.
Healthcare
Sunrise of North Scottsdale residents have 24-hour medication support from their on-site nurse, ensuring immediate response to anyone requiring medical attention. The nurse also works closely with families and doctors to develop a personal life plan tailored to each residents needs and abilities.
In addition, there are a number of healthcare facilities within a short distance of Sunrise of North Scottsdale. Among them, Shea Medical Center is nine minutes away, the Mayo Clinic is a 10-minute drive and Thompson Peak Hospital is 11 minutes from the community. The communitys concierge is available to schedule residents transportation to and from medical appointments.
Health Programs
The Mind Body Awareness Club at Sunrise of North Scottsdale was designed by a gerontologist to help residents maintain brain health and long-term wellness. The club hosts daily activities in the areas of mental fitness, physical exercise, nutrition, and spiritual and creative thinking. Included in the program, which is available to all residents, is a personal trainer who provides a mental fitness assessment for each new member.
Circle of Friends is an award-winning program available at Sunrise Scottsdale that focuses on the mental and physical fitness needs of people experiencing mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The program provides a structured schedule for residents with ability-based group activities. These daily sessions can help develop mind and body fitness, self-esteem and confidence. The program received Honorable Mention in 2011 at the George Mason University Health Care Quality Improvement Awards.
Sunrise of North Scottsdale also offers a program called Person-Centered Living, designed for those with Alzheimers and other forms of dementia. Residents in the program live in a separate, secured area of the community and take part in daily workouts that help exercise their minds and memory.
Activities and Events
Sunrise of North Scottsdale residents can take their pick from a variety of daily, weekly and monthly activities organized by the community. Frequent group physical activities at the community include water aerobics, Tai chi, Wii bowling, and a Parkinsons exercise class. On a typical day residents might also be invited to play a board game or work on a jigsaw puzzle with neighbors, then later to a community happy hour or movie night.
Each month, the community organizes social and cultural activities such as wine socials, art classes, comedy shows, guest lectures and local bus excursions. The Sunrise of North Scottsdale concierge is available to arrange transportation for shopping trips and group outings. In a typical month, Sunrise of North Scottsdale residents might go on an organized excursion to the nearby Frank Lloyd Wright Museum or on a 30-minute drive to the Tempe Center for the Arts to take in a musical.

Everyone I met here was very pleasant, seemed knowledgeable, and very cordial. They greeted everybody. The rooms that I saw were very small, but it had a courtyard view from the inside. They gave us a sandwich and some food to take with me and it was very good. They had a beauty salon, a movie theater, and a couple of different rooms. One area had chairs in it where people could watch TV.

One thing that I liked about it was that the memory unit was in a certain area with a keypunch, rather than just allowing the residents to wander. Not that my mom wanders right now, but that could be a concern as her disease progresses. The staff was very friendly. They were working and sitting with the residents outside, helping them get around. The bedrooms were bigger, and it could actually fit a full or queen size bed, which my mom already has. Their dining area was cafeteria style, so it wasn't anything fancy or anything like that. They have little tables with five or six people on each.

It has very nice people and the lady that I met with who showed me around was very nice and extremely knowledgeable. I didn't care for anything they had to offer except the nice people. They have the same general things that other places offer. It's just a normal senior place.

It was lovely, but it was almost too big. It was like driving up to a very large, fancy hotel. It was lovely. It wasn’t intimate, but it’s gorgeous. It was very busy with people coming and going with buses taking them somewhere. It was an active community, mostly independent living. It wouldn’t have been the right fit for my mother because it was just too much. She’s half blind and can barely speak or walk. It was an active community, mostly independent living. We went a second time and had lunch with my mother. It’s gorgeous.

It was very nice; the people and the staff were nice too. That one also had apartments that had a full kitchen. It was smaller, and it felt like you are living in an extended stay hotel not like a community, but it was lovely.
