My father-in-law has moved into Evergreen Cottages - Jasmine Cottage. He has probably been there for three weeks now. He has a private room, a full bath, and a walk-in shower. He has a little closet with drawers and a place to hang his clothes. The hospice provided oxygen, a hospital bed, and a wheelchair. They have a monthly calendar. They have a mealtime in the morning, then they have an activity, a mid-morning snack, and then they relax for a few minutes while they're preparing lunch. They have lunch, they rest for a few minutes after lunch, and then they have an afternoon activity. They have an afternoon snack, and they may have an activity. It depends on how the residents are. Some days are different, and not everybody wants to be involved, but they always put music on. My father-in-law likes to draw, so they always make coloring books and colored pencils available. So sometimes he sits there and colors for hours and hours. The staff is really well with him. Right now, it's too hot to get out and do too much with the residents because they're onto many medications and the heat and everything, but they have scheduled activities. They have dinner at 5:15 p.m. and they may do an activity depending on the personality of the residents and their stage of care. They have ice cream and medication, and then they have bedtime. Hospice care would go in two to three times a week for shower and grooming. Every Friday, if they choose to, they can get a little manicure and pedicure. It's really nice. They offer haircuts monthly. They keep up with the grooming. They're in constant communication with us. They had a little Fourth of July party and then a summer party. They do birthday parties, play videos, and take pictures. It was a pleasant interaction. The staff has been tremendous.

About Evergreen Cottages - Jasmine Cottage in Katy, Texas
Like many great ideas, the concept for Evergreen Cottages Assisted Living began in the kitchen. Family and friends had gathered for dinner. The conversation flowing from the kitchen to the great room ultimately turned to the challenges of getting older and the prevalence of Alzheimers and other dementias. The inevitable questions came about, What would Mom or Dad want? What would we want for them? What would we want for ourselves? The conversation and answers to these questions formed the concept and impetus for Evergreen Cottages. What was unique about this dinner of friends and family was that this was a group of professionals deeply experienced in the hospitality industry. We toured Evergreen Cottages - Jasmine Cottage. At first, we were thinking maybe it would be easiest to put my friend there, but I started double-thinking because they put the memory care people in with the assisted living people, and I think there is only a total of 18 people in each cottage. I just thought the people in the assisted living would be limited in what they were able to do because of the memory care people there, too. I noticed that the vanity drawers in the bathroom in the room that we toured all had locks on them, and that gave me a little bit of red flags, like maybe somebody was forgetting where they were at, and entered your room instead of their own or something. I just didn't feel comfortable with that. They also had a one-price for all. It didn't matter what level of care you are, it was just one flat price. Nevertheless, the place itself is very nice, and the rooms are nice, too. It is fairly new. There is a nice room for the family to have intimate dinner parties and that kind of thing if you want to have something separate. The staff seemed very friendly. My biggest hiccup was the fact that the memory care were with the assisted living. The residents were out eating their meals when we were doing our tour that day. They had two large tables, and there must have been about eight or nine people at each table. They have a really nice area in the back where people can do some gardening. They have some raised beds and stuff, so anybody that is into gardening would be able to continue to do that, and I thought that was pretty cool. Suzanne, who did our tour, did a good job. She was very informative, too.

My husband was in Evergreen Cottages - Jasmine Cottage. They were very, very nice and were very, very caring there. It was very clean. The staff was always cleaning and always cooking. They watch each resident and they make sure that they get seated at the dining room table. If they wanted to sit in the community room with the TV because they were watching a football game or something, they would help them do that. They've got a budget they're working with and they've also got residents that can't have spicy food, but they still made good food. They have church groups that come in and if a resident needs physical therapy, I think they can have physical therapists come in and work with them. Value for money was excellent. They all are expensive. It's in the same price range as the others, but it was better than the others.
