My mother had been in an apartment at Alvin Memorial Gardens. It had been exceptionally good for her. It's independent living. There were no services that were provided, but we had doctors coming to the house. It's low income, so they go by your income. Mother's rent was like $300, and it was a nice little apartment. It was one bedroom, and they had studios, too. It had been a good place for her to live. When you walk in the door, they have the decor for the month and some birthdays posted. They have a nice gathering area where they would play bingo. They have monthly luncheons and gatherings. They have church services available, and visiting folks coming in from the community as requested. The staff was wonderful. Mother had an incident, but we couldn't get there before the ambulance did, so one of the staff members went up and sat with her until the ambulance got there. She made sure that she was okay. That's not part of their duties, but that's the kind of people they are. They would greet you. The cleaning staff would do the same. They knew Mother's name and always greeted her. It's an older building, but every time Mother made a request for a repair or some help in the apartment, their carpenter was sent up immediately and did a good job of it. She was very happy there; she hated to leave it. You supply your food, and you have your own little kitchen. It's a red brick building, and it's well enough maintained for its age. They keep it clean. They had a lot of activities. They had some dominoes, and they had birthday celebrations every month.
