I toured the Holiday Madrona Hills. It's very peaceful. They have a salon and a day room. The dining facilities were clean, they were attentive, and the food was good. They're remodeling my apartment, it's spacious, and it was very quiet. I've been there once, and then I've been in contact with them. Everything's pretty much up front with their website. You have to sign a bunch of paperwork and stuff like that and meet the people, but based on their website, it was accurate. It was nice meeting them and being able to see the place for myself. I was impressed with the amount of attention they paid to their interactive website. The food is good.

I moved into Holiday Madrona Hills. So far, I'm doing great here. I love my apartment. I have a balcony and a nice view of some trees, and it kind of reminds me of home. The staff here is wonderful. They're very caring and helpful. They work hard and they do a good job. They provide 3 meals a day and they've been delicious. We do bingo, Bible study, book club, and puzzles, and we have a lot of different card games. There's an exercise bike, but there's no real gym here. The library is excellent. There's a walking trail and we have a pond in the back. We used to have ducks come, but then they quit feeding them. Other than the yearly rent increase, this place is wonderful.

Holiday Madrona Hills was great. The people were great. The food was great. I did stay for lunch. The building was great. I saw just a studio. It's one big room with a microwave and a refrigerator. They had an exercise room. They had a lot of activities.

Holiday Madrona Hills is nice, clean, and well-kept. Everything in mom's unit was replaced so she got a new carpet and new paint. Everything was redone. It was all nice and new. The facility itself is pleasant. All the staff seemed very friendly and very helpful. Now the food could use some improvement. I didn't think it was that appealing, but one really nice thing is every day at lunch, they provide fresh home-baked rolls that are absolutely delicious. The rest of the food, not so much. So, my mother has a hard time finding the things she likes to eat. She has a grill and microwave in her room though so can pick stuff for herself if she chooses not to eat in the dining room.

Holiday Madrona Hills is a very strange campus because there is a central place, and then quite a distance to the north are most of the cottages. It is a long walk from those cottages to the meals. I don't know how the people do it. We talked to two or three residents, and they were very happy people. I asked about the walk, and they said it was no problem. Some residents have golf carts. It would almost be required to have a golf cart from the far northern cabins. I have no problem with the staff. They were very professional. They seemed to be skilled at what they were doing. We had lunch there, and that was fine. Everything else was just fine. It just didn't appeal to us. I saw a lot of people that were going off campus to an activity. They were waiting to get on the bus. I saw a beanball baseball game, which was interesting. They were very involved and having a good time. The distance between the eating facilities, the main building, the other cottages, and actually recommending that you buy a golf cart (so that you can get from your place to where you're gonna eat) just seemed very strange to me. It certainly wasn't something that appealed to me. I can't understand even how it works. It was a long time before the food got to us. I commented about that to the lady who was leading us around. She said, "Every other day, we serve the people from the opposite side of the room. Today it was the other side of the room that got service first." Furthermore, it was strange to me that she seated us at the slow side, instead of the fast side. If I was running the place, I wouldn't do it that way. The units seemed to be quite well kept, but the main building had an older feel to it. It was a very clean campus, and the cottages that were north of the main building felt newer and very well cared for.

Holiday Madrona Hills seemed like a nice community. It just didn't seem perfect for us. A lot of the interior and room stuff was very dated and looked very old, like it hadn't been renovated in 15 years. Looks like it needed a lot of upgrades like some paint, decor, or remodeling. The staff seemed very great and they had lots of different activities. They had a game room, an area with a big screen TV for showing movies, and different other activities that they listed that they offered.

I went to Holiday Madrona Hills. Everything was great. The people were great. It looked like they had recently updated everything, so the lobby was nice and everything seemed a little fresher. They're about the same price as the other place, but the rooms at Holiday Madrona Hills were a little bit smaller. The grounds were very nice. They seemed to have a lot of activities.

We toured Holiday Madrona Hills, it was very homey and very warm. They had lots of independent living options, and the staff who gave the tour was very nice. Their outdoor area was lovely, it had water features and lots of natural elements. It's a very nice and well-kept place, and the facilities looked good.

I visited Madrona Hills and the facility is very nice. We liked Ryan well, he's a good person to have for their marketing. This place is the one that Helen just felt fit her the best, or she liked the best. They had a very nice dining room. We looked at a studio apartment, and then a 1-bedroom apartment; they were fine. The one studio has sliding doors that go right outside, which was pleasant, it was nice. There was a group of residents gathered around a table playing their version of Wheel of Fortune. They were all having a good time. They had an exercise room and all kinds of activities going on. We met the activities director. They had been decorating. They had 13 Christmas trees throughout the building. It was very nice. We met Corey, he's the one that had called me the night before, and then Ryan was the one that took us around. He was the marketing person. We met the office person also, and then a couple of the guests just as we were walking around, and people that lived there. They were all very friendly. The facility is very nice. Parking is a little tight. As an independent living place, more people have their own vehicles. The facility seemed to be very clean-looking. They had the dining room plates sitting down already; it was decorated.

Madrona Hills was very nice and clean. The people were very nice. I liked the way it was laid out. The staff members were really good and nice. Everything was really maintained. Some of them had a seating area in the middle of their section of where you live. You could go out and sit. Some of them had a pond. It was just kind of a relaxing place. Everything was good. I loved the pictures they had on the wall. It just made you feel homey when you went inside. Some of them were playing cards and doing puzzles. They had a section where it was kind of like a theater. You can go and watch a movie if you want.

Madrona Hills was very nice, but it just wasn't the independent living that we wanted. We like the home that they showed us. It has a very small grounds, compared to the place we chose. The person who gave us the tour was friendly and informative. They were going to give us lunch; but because we did all the touring, the lunch pretty much was gone by the time they offered us food. It was not appealing. They fed us leftovers, basically. They have the usual amenities like transportation, and it was OK. The location is great. It's right next to a shopping center. The staff keeps the place clean, and the room we saw was adequate. The layout of the place is appealing.

We toured Madrona Hills for my grandfather and the food was good. It was clean, beautiful, and was a nice place. I liked the rooms very much. They had a full-sized kitchen and that was nice. It has full-size fridge, too. That was what my mom liked about it. She liked the room there more than the room in the other place.

I'm at Madrona Hills. The administrative staff is experienced in senior living; the hospitality staff and all the other people are doing a very good job. The facility is in excellent condition. All of the apartments that I've seen have recently been painted or maintained, and the appliances all work. It's really a very nice facility. I haven't had any chance to participate, but they have constant list of activities available like cribbage lessons, trips to various sites, grocery runs, and so forth. The food is pretty good. They kind of oversold the food, but I'm not terribly disappointed in what's actually being served versus what they were talking about. I think it's a very good value as far as I'm concerned at my level of income, which is Social Security. It's actually costing me less to live here with all my meals furnished, than it was when I was in my own home. I'm independent living, and it's meeting all of my needs so far.

The staff from Madrona Hills was very nice. One of the problems with it is that you have to have a golf cart to get around because it's all asphalt. It was rainy, too, so you have to have a waterproof kind of golf cart. I saw one room that I was interested in, and it was outside. It was a cottage, but we had to go down a lot of steps to get into it and to get out, too. I can navigate it right now, but you'll never know when you're old when some things go bad. Their cottages were complete. It's just like any 2-bedroom apartment. It's very fine, adequate, and new enough, and the appliances that were there were fine. There's absolutely no grass around; it's all asphalt. It's located at the back of a parking lot, so it's a little busy. The staff was helpful and friendly, and they wanted me to move in there. They were very nice and attentive, and they followed up.

We visited one of the rooms at Madrona Hills that was being redone. The place was way down at the bottom of a hill just east of Fred Meyer. We went in a golf cart because going up and down those hills would be impossible for me. The room was being made ready for a new customer and it wasn't available to us, but we got a really good look inside the storage and all its features. The staff was very helpful. One of their managers showed us around. They will possibly have a vacancy by the middle of December, but we didn't like the location of that vacancy. He said they would not have it open until the people had moved out. They had already notified them they were moving out, but it had a flight of stairs down to the front door, and we didn't want that. They were very accommodating. They were not allowing people to eat there except a few select people that lived in the building and all meals were delivered to the people in the apartments. The room was beautiful, brand new, they just put a new floor down, took all the carpeting out and put down a hardwood floor.

The lengths that the staff goes to ensure safety of the residents, and their quality of life is heartwarming. All the staff that I have interacted with are welcoming and appear to genuinely love their job. My mom has never had anything negative to say about anything or anyone.

My parents moved into Madrona Hills. They really like it there. My mom likes the trail, and she likes to walk in the building. The staff is extremely nice and helpful, and they're always visiting with them and helping them out. The food is pretty good, and it's a nice place, close to everything, and also close to us. The staff members who help the people with food, and the maintenance people have very exceptional service. My parents seem to be very happy there. My mom has gone to the Sunday services, they have a couple of exercise things upstairs, and they have both used the treadmill and liked it. It's a newer facility, and the location is nice.

Madrona Hills was a beautiful place. The whole place was very mellow. We talked to the residents, and they all seemed to like it. However, they didn't take Medicaid. The food was very good, especially for an institution. They offer rides to wherever you need to go, they help with the pills, and you got a security button that contacts them when you're outside or when you fall. The staff members were helpful, courteous, kind, and patient. They even got me a wheelchair to wheel me down. They have private apartments there.

The residents liked it a lot and they were having a great time. So, I think the activities are A1.

Madrona Hills is a nice place. They have a lot of activities, nice people, and good food most of the time. It's kept clean. I liked them enough to return after I had left. The trouble is I got $100 a month increase in my rent. They bartered down a few dollars, but I won't pay that much for my studio. They have word games, beanbag baseball, coloring, Scrabble, and several card games. There's enough to keep people very busy if they choose to. The people are very nice and the place is clean and smells good. The staff is nice. I have a large studio that's very nice, and there's plenty of room to make a living room and a bedroom. They offer three meals. No one's here at night anymore, but we have a push button alert for rescue. They did a bunch of painting this year and they take pretty good care of the facility. The activity director is a little overwhelmed, but she's kind of new.

Madrona Hills was a really nice and clean facility. They showed us a room and it was really nice. The people were nice. They had lots of activities going on. There was Bingo and even a cooking class. It's a good location, and pretty centrally located in Salem. It was right off the road. It has plenty of parking and it has really nice gardens and foliage. There were some things that probably could've been updated. We didn't try a meal, but it looked really good.

Aaron D. took me and my family - my husband and our 2 adult daughters who traveled to Salem for this purpose - on a tour of Madrona Hills. Our tour began with a sign at the reception desk welcoming us by name and included a truly great meal. The location is good as it is in a lovely, wooded area near grocery stores, restaurants (such as they are in Salem), and various service providers. However, in my opinion a resident can live here without needing any of those because Madrona Hills provides meals and resident services such as housekeeping. We met one of the two fulltime maintenance men and enjoyed his personality as well as the fact he was putting up some shelving a resident had requested. The suites are nicely designed and have individual heat/air conditioning management. We each believed the closets in all of the different sized suites are appropriate and the bathrooms are well designed. Aaron not only greeted residents and staff by name, but was himself greeted by name. The people we met appeared fit and we were impressed no one seemed at all distraught. The building and suites are clean, inviting, and well lit. All in all, this is by all appearances a place in which one can feel comfortable.

The only things you could get out of a studio apartment at Madrona Hills were a bed, a chair, and a TV. It was like living in a motel room which I'm not exactly crazy about doing. The grounds are OK, nothing special. The food was OK -- nothing to write home about -- but they offer 3 meals a day.

I am living at Madrona Hills and I am happy with it. I haven't had any big disappointments. Everything is as they said it was. I am younger, and this is independent living, so I just didn't expect so many older grey-haired people around, but they're all very nice. I am okay. I participate in Beanbag baseball. I actually got sucked into it, I went out the door and when I came back in, they said "Hey come over here, we need you!" and so it's been like that ever since. It helps me. They have bus trips to different places but I don't go on those. I did one time but that's because we went to the main company there, the corporate offices, and we were playing against them in the Beanbag baseball so rode up there together. They have all different things set up here. For the food, you can tell that their sous-chef is trying to put out food that you would serve at a regular restaurant. It wasn't satisfying, it was weird. It was like coconut-butternut-squash soup and other weird stuff like chicken breast with pesto sauce that you would see more in a culinary school. I just found out that you can order hamburgers so that'll be much better instead of restaurant-style. That was my only complaint; the food. The reason I took this place is because I got a downstairs wherein I face the forest, and I can go out to my patio and there are trails right there so my view is really nice. If I hadn't gotten this downstairs room, I would have looked elsewhere. This is the best option for me. The laundry is free of charge. You have housekeeping, the come in and they vacuum, change your sheets and give you towels, and that made a big difference.

My husband and I are in Madrona Hills. We like it very much. Everyone who works here goes out of their way to help all of us. They’re very professional and very efficient. They clean our units once a week and they do some laundry. They do the flatware for us. They’ll change the sheets on our bed and wash them. We get 3 meals 7 days a week here. They have a big building with apartments plus some outdoor cottages. The facilities are maintained and any thing that goes wrong, they fix. They’ve already done a little bit of work on our unit. We needed new screens and they’ve replaced those the day I put the work order in. They have a lot of activities and a lot of entertainment. Sometimes, they have 2 or 3 activities going on so you can pick from them. They do trips twice a week out into the community. They provide bus service taking us wherever we want to go for shopping, errands, and doctor appointments.

We chose Madrona Hills because of the overall atmosphere, friendly, outgoing people that run the place, and good communication -- which is the biggest reason. I lived for a year in a studio at Madrona Hills and it was one of their smaller studios. They changed the pricing a lot, so everybody gets a different price. My experience was, overall, they treated me at the right time because I couldn't find a place to live with my service dog. I had a large service dog, so they came in handy right at that time. I paid $1,200 a month which included 3 meals a day and one day a week cleaning or house maintenance. They had a servicing passenger bus and they go all over the place. They go to the beach, and two of the popular places they go to were the casino and Spirit Mountain, and they like to take people on antique shopping. They had a full array of activities for the seniors every day. The staff was very nice. They had an A manager pair of house managers, which were the lead, and then the B manager pair. There is a lot of turnover in their management staff, not so much for the housekeeping or the other staff, and I wasn't really impressed. A couple of them I liked, but the turnover was unsettling to a lot of the elders there. With the entire turnover in their management staff, they are kind of out of touch with the clients. They didn't make good choices for people and there was a lot of personal kind of quandary on several different cases about how things will happen. This is why I give it a three; I am not impressed because management is very important in these types of places and if they are not settled and they are slandering, it is not good. But, it was there when I needed it. It fulfilled a place for me and indeed it was expensive, but it gave me a place for years, so that I could still figure out what I am going to do next and this is what it did best for me.

I went to Madrona Hills, and they were nice. Very clean. I love trees, but there was a lot of cement and sidewalks. It is so paved, but there isn't room for a lot of shrubbery or trees. That just isn't my lifestyle. That was independent living because she showed me cottages there. It was right next door to a Fred Meyer's. About half a mile away was a place called Madrona Lake, and that was really nice. It felt like you would have to dress up to go down to the dining room. It just had a little bit more of a sophisticated feel to it than what I would really want. That would probably be a nice place for a person if they really needed the care.

The food was excellent at Madrona Hills. The people who live there were very friendly and outgoing and made me very welcome, as did the managers. I felt very comfortable there. I particularly liked the cottages, mostly because they have a small washer and dryer on the inside, and because I need someplace where the grass comes up very near the house because I have a service dog that has to go with me to every place. So my biggest concern is her, that she'll be happy there. They had a beauty shop there, which was very convenient. They play a lot of games during the day, and they play card games, and they were all interested in those. Also, it's very important to me that it's in an area that has shopping mall very nearby. So just about anything you wanted you could go to without too much trouble. They had a very friendly driver who takes you to wherever you need to go, and he went out of his way to be very polite. And my dog was allowed to go in the bus when we went places. That was important to me.

They have a schedule of different things they could do, like arts and crafts classes and music. When we were there, there was a Bible study group going on. The dining room was nice. I thought the apartments were nice too. They had some apartments that were absolutely beautiful. However, they also had some little one-bedroom cottages that were really rundown and yucky inside. Their size was OK even though they were tiny, but they weren't remodeled at all, so they weren't very nice-looking inside.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My mother in law's first care facility was Madrona Hills in Salem, OR. It was okay and they had activities but not to the extent of the others I visited. I think they need to improve on the limitations they have in the building itself. I was in their building that looked like apartments, with the rooms all in a row. It's older and doesn't have the same look and feel like the others. That's important to my mom and she wanted it to look nice. It's an okay facility though my mother in law keeps talking about them having a large turnover. It costs less money so if one cannot afford the others, then this is a decent choice.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

Holiday Retirement at Madrona Hills is a mix of assisted living and senior apartments. The "big house", as my Grandma called it, had seniors of varying ages and backgrounds, living in an assisted environment. A husband and wife duo would be there at all times, assisting with issues or just keeping the tenants company. They received three meals a day, and family and friends were welcome to visit at all time. Many of the wait staff were teenagers, and always friendly with the tenants. Trips were also arranged, from going to the grocery store to the beach. The tenants had varying levels of assistance provided, from help with their medication to showering or getting dressed. Entertainment would even be brought in from time to time. My grandmother loved the Elvis impersonator. On-site activities included a pool table, a Wii, and Bingo. All in all, it is a lovely facility, and highly recommended.
