I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My friend in Portland has a friend that lives at The Stafford, so she called me up and we went there. I didn't have a formal tour, but when I got home, whoever is in charge of showing people around called me. She wanted to come and get me and give me the official tour. My friend's friend had a one-bedroom apartment. It was too small for me. However, she was active, and I saw people dining and playing mahjong. They had a beauty salon, and they had all the amenities that I could see myself being there. She wasn't my friend, but at the very end, when we had to leave and we were walking out, she said, 'Oh, it's 5 o'clock! The pub is open! Let's have a glass of wine!' So we went in the pub, we sat down, and before I knew it, we had a half dozen people at our table. I love the setup of her one-bedroom, it just needed a little more space, but it was fine. We also didn't meet any staff members. My friend's friend was on the first floor, and so when we called her, she said, 'Yeah, come on in.' She was there, and it was the experience of talking to people who live there that I realized I could fit in there, and that's what's important. They have book clubs and bridges. They have everything. The one thing that was difficult there was parking. It was very difficult to find parking, which was the only negative. The cost is on the high-end, too, but they're all about the same price.

This place is hands down THE Retirement Community of SW Portland. When you’re caring for an elder, proximity is almost your first factor. It’s hard enough as is to add extra driving time to visit your loved one. The process of aging is nothing but exhausting. I am SO grateful my mom was able to move from Independent Living to Assisted Living seamlessly. These folks are truly rockstars from the Executive Director to the dining room staff. Too many names to even mention, but I remember each one and love them all. It IS much like a hotel. Private. Quiet. NOT an institution. Chef Jake is amazing. Clint is your 5-Star driver to take you to activities if you are active and you won’t have to put your kids inheritance on the line to get in. This place is truly wonderful and special.

I visited this facility

The Stafford was very nice. The food was good. The staff we met were friendly, but it was very dark and the people weren't active in the community. When you walk in the door, you don't get a feeling of home. You get a feeling of more of a hotel and that wasn't what my friend was looking for. She was looking for a more friendly, active place with people walking around and doing things. It was very expensive and the rooms were very small. We saw one that was in a courtyard that was cute, but very expensive for what you got. For the meals, they gave you an allowance for it. When you go to the dining room, you would see a price tag next to the meal and then they would deduct it from your allowance, which I thought was rather bizarre, but that's what they did. They had housekeeping once a week where they would come and do your floors, change your sheets, and clean/vacuum your room. They also have activities, buses, and things that would take you places and doctor's appointments. There was no pool, but I think they had a small weight room or a gym-type thing you could use.

I visited this facility

The Stafford is where I'm planning to put my husband eventually, but right now, they don't have any assisted living vacancies. Aside from independent living, it also has assisted living, and it allows outside caregivers to come in. The staff that I met during the tour was nice, both the marketing people and the concierge at the desk were excellent. I had lunch there, their kitchen is run by a culinary graduate, and that was probably the best institutional food I've ever had. The appearance of the place is very good.

Provider Response

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My mother is in Stafford. She had been in the independent part since the facility opened seven years ago. So, she knows the staff, and a lot of friends are still there. They also had a perfect survey. They are just very nice people to work with. They got activities. It is a small unit with only 12 apartments, so everybody has their own apartment, and I was able to move all of her furniture in. The staffing ratio is very good, and they're very kind to her. She gets her meals three times a day either in the dining room or she can have it delivered to her room. She has been in the assisted part for about two weeks now.

I am/was a resident of this facility

We have been here at The Stafford for six years now. We chose this one because it is near where my husband's children live. Also, it has a good setting, as it is close to shopping centers and so forth. We also chose this because the year we moved in, it was new. We have a one-bedroom apartment. They also have two-bedroom apartments. Overall, this is a wonderful place. We like everything about it. The staff is excellent. They have activities of all kinds, like exercise. They have access to the grounds and whatnot. They also have transportation for people who don't drive. We find it easy to have activities of our choice, and we find it easy to meet people here.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

The Stafford is a lovely facility located in Lake Oswego, OR, just a short drive to downtown Portland. The facility is by far the nicest retirement community I've ever visited, and it also has an assisted living facility attached for those who require a bit of extra help. The location is very nice, on the quite outskirts of the city, and within walking or driving distance of a number of great shops and restaurants. The Stafford always has great food in its wonderful dining room, with a variety of options available for food. There is also a small cafe that serves hot drinks and snacks. The staff is very helpful and attentive to the needs of their clientele. The grounds are well maintained and provide a beautiful setting. There is also a nice gym and spa facilities located in the Stafford. It would be very easy to live there year-round and never step a foot of the grounds.
