"I toured Oak Park Place Nakoma. Sue, the director, was the most kind, caring, and generous with the time of any of the people. She was the most proactive in terms of follow-up and not pressuring you at all but just really being in it for the people. It's apparent that she cares about all the people involved and that they truly care about the residents and their families. It was a very good comprehensive tour. In terms of the condition of the place, I would say it was really nice and well-maintained. It's like a newer facility and it's nice looking. They have some nice communal areas. Currently, the average age of their residents is older than my father-in-law who has early-onset dementia. A lot of the patients there were in a little further and later stages of dementia, so that was a negative for us. Part of why we're looking at centers is so that my father-in-law can have socialization, but if you have a lot of bedridden or wheelchair-bound patients that aren't as social with the activities, that makes it harder. Their memory care unit isn't on the first floor, it's on the second floor, so their only outdoor space is a concrete balcony versus other places we toured that had memory care that had an outdoor patio with some green space. Since nature is a huge love of my father-in-law, that's a big thing for us. "

"Willows Nursing & Rehab Center was fine. I didn't see any problem. They took care of my mother all right. I had no negative comments against them. The staff was very good. The food was all right. The room was always kept clean, and my mother was always kept clean. They had activities that people could do every day like playing games and watching movies, even little field trips at some place. However, my mother could not have any of that because she could not get out of bed. "

"This is my 3rd nursing home this year. They all suffer from understaffing, altho Crossroads seems to have the most staff. I like my room. It is not huge (approximately 15x10). I share a toilet with the person next to me but there is a bathroom right across the hall. There is a sink in each room to help with the twice a week showering. There are things to do here with a small group of active residents. The staff is really nice as are the therapists. The bad issue is the food. It is terrible (0 star). Low quality of food that is cooked poorly. The biggest complaint is that the food is overcooked on the outside and still undercooked on the inside. To order, they send around a form the day before, and you pick what you want. Far too often, this form is ignored. Luckily, across the hall is a fridge we can use and a microwave so I have a few days food stored and that's what I eat."

"As far as I can tell, the care that Sun Prairie Retirement Center provides to my husband has been very good, I would say excellent. I've never been in the place because of the virus. In some manner, they've accommodated outside visits by having a plexi glass with a table and being 6 feet apart. They've tried to accommodated visitations now that it's colder, though right now they're not doing the visiting. As far as I can tell it's been very good. I get reports like if he sees a doctor, he's had a fall and they called, and they've called with questions. I can talk to him virtually and they do updates if he gets his flu shot. I'm his medical attorney and they need to contact me if he gets a shot, and they do. He likes the food although I haven't seen it. He said he's comfortable. Their facility on the outside looks very nice, and they have it decorated for the season. The facility itself is fairly old but it certainly in good repair so it's fine."

"We were very happy with the attention given given to my 92 year old husband. The rooms are adequate with private baths. The staff was incredibly cheerful and helpful. They seem to have a very high number of staff per patient. The nursing care for bandaging an amputation was well done, promptly, and according to Doctors instruction. The community between patients and Staff at meals and during the many varied activities was especially cheerful. The Physical Therapy was cheerfully done every day. If needed rehab we would return. "

"When I went to Karmenta Center, I saw that there were people from all ages and ethnicities and they were happy there. I felt that the ambiance and the younger people there were much suited for my daughter. I have been calling them and trying to get my daughter there, but they don't have any openings yet. "

"The Arbors at Oak Park Place is a very nice facility. They have a lot of activities, and the people in charge are very responsive to everybody's needs. They have a variety of rooms, and my mother is in a two-bedroom apartment. She can go down for Continental breakfast, lunch is on their own, and supper is provided in the dining room. They have a schedule of events. They're having a dog show this week, they have a lot of singers and choirs come in, and they have movie nights, crafts, and a puzzle room. The staff is very nice, and the sales and marketing director is extremely nice. She was always checking in on Mom before we were able to move in because she was on a waiting list. The property manager is very nice, helpful, and responsive. The food I had was very good."

"My wife was there for several months. I visited her several hours a day when she was there. She received very good care. The nursing staff knows their job and does it well. The therapists are first class. The food is good enough that the staff often buys meals. The wait after the call light is turned on is short. In fact, shorter than for her than at UW Hospital. The staff is friendly, knows the patients, and cares about them. I would choose Belmont if I needed a nursing home. "

"I chose Columbus Nur Rehab Center and I'm being moved there. My husband was there after his surgery, and I just feel comfortable there. Our experience was fine, they helped him a lot, and if we pushed the button they came. The food was alright; I'm a fussy eater so I wouldn't have eaten some of the stuff, but he liked the food. He was in a room by himself and there was a shared bathroom. The bathroom had a door from his room and the other door. If the other person didn't lock that door, you'd see someone sitting in the toilet. They have facilities for therapy where they do different things like weight-lifting, walk around, and up the steps. They have an area outside where you can sit on a canopy if you want to, or are out in the sun. They have a community area. The staff members were good, they were nice friendly people. The layout is good; there are a lot of windows."

"I liked everything about Oakwood Village University Woods. It's a very nice place, and it was everything I'm looking for. Of course, it's kind of expensive. I toured independent living, but they also have assisted living and continuing care. They were excellent in everything. I didn't taste any food, but they have two restaurants there to order food. They had everything like a theater, a salon, and all kinds of programs (like exercise and art programs). It was really clean, too. It's on a very good road. Mineral Point Road is one of the major thoroughfares in Madison, so it's very accessible to anyone. The rooms were very adequate. They're the normal 1-bedroom size. It had the galley kitchen with the microwave and everything that I would have wanted. The staff who toured me was very knowledgeable and very helpful."

"This facility is top notch. My mother-in-law spent the last couple months of her life in the long-term care area. The staff are very attentive and caring. Everyone from administration to all the caregivers we met showed high integrity and a commitment to do good work. Hospice was also outstanding. We're very grateful and would highly recommend Attic Angels to others."

"My mother-in-law did go into this nursing home . It was not a great experience. She was there for seven weeks. The problem is when somebody is alert and is only there for short term, I don't think they're really attuned to that type of patient. They weren't as attentive as what I would have liked or that my mother-in-law would have liked. The meals were terrible. Staffing was minimal, so that caused increased time in call bells being answered. My mother-in-law called 2:20 a.m. at our house, and said, 'Rhonda, I can't get a hold of anybody. Can you call down here? I have to go to the bathroom really bad.' Now, this is at night. It's not busy. Nobody came until I called down there, and then they went to help her. At that time, she couldn't do it independently. I bought her a cell phone so that she could communicate outside of the cordless phone that they have. She's 89 years old, and she learned how to use a cell phone. Nobody should have to call 2:30 in the morning and say, 'Can you get some help for me' when the call light is on. The meals, maybe they were OK for others. My mother-in-law might be a little picky, but she did not like them at all. She lost 10 pounds while she was there. When I called down there, the administrator and the social worker would call me back. We would work to try to resolve some things. Due to COVID, they had minimal staff. That's no fault of the nursing home itself, and obviously it was hard to visit her. We had to make appointments and call 24 hours before (and that's just part of COVID). We understand that, but it added to the anxiety of her being there and wondering if we're ever going to be able to see her. We were able to take my mother-in-law's personal recliner so that was a positive. They shared bathrooms, and I didn't like that. I don't think that they remodeled or anything like that. They got a new phone system too, but you couldn't even get through. I was very thankful that she had her cell phone, so at least we could talk to her, but you couldn't talk to the staff who didn't know how to use the phone system. They carry this cell phone around, but they still don't answer the phone all the time."

"St Mary's Care Center has a lot of activities. They help seniors write letters to their family. They have a writing club. They have a whole area where you can do puzzles. They have birds. They have a beautiful fish aquarium. They have a hair salon that anyone can use. They have absolutely wonderful activities. They have a chapel. They play bingo, and what they do is really cute because they win quarters. Once a week at the end of the week, or once a month, they have a store where they can buy things like lotions or knickknacks or whatever, which are worth a lot more than a quarter. They price them within their range. They have foot care that comes. I'm just very impressed. The staff were very caring, very friendly, and very helpful. They seem to really care about the patients. The food was very good. I think the physical appearance was wonderful. They have floral arrangements. They have a huge parking lot. They have a gazebo, and they have areas on different floors, too, and you can go outside with the patients. Inside they have lounge areas for family and patients. It is really nice. They're close to the kitchen where you can help yourself to something to eat or drink coffee. Each wing has a porch that you get out in the fresh air."

"Both my mom and dad were there for a very short few months and the caregivers were great with them. They didn't mind being there at all. It wasn't home, but they both knew they couldn't be anywhere else before there passing. They remembered me coming every day to see them and knew I knew the drill of what to do. They would chat and be very respectable to everyone that they had seen. Just giving the workers a big thumbs up because without them the people living there wouldn't have the care that they need. I know my mom played bingo, the room was nice and big for the both of them. They had a tv in their room and could bring in some furniture if they needed to. "

"My mother is at Skaalen Retirement Services Inc. It's been very good. All of the caregivers are wonderful. The staff has been really helpful and concerned that she has the best experience possible. The room setup is nice, clean, and well-maintained. They have a covered area with benches outside that's quite large and nice. The landscaping is very pretty. There are lots of different flowers to look at and it's shaded. It's like a pavilion that has a top. They have activities out there a lot. My mom likes to be outside. They have a smaller covered area as well with a sofa and chairs. My mom's there for rehab, and we've loved the care. The staff has all been very nice to her. She's in a newer area, and it's very nice. I was in there every day for five weeks with her, and they were always very, very caring. They know me by name. I did not meet anybody who was not kind to my mom. My mom said the food was much better than hospital food. I have nothing bad to say about them. They have food available for the residents as far as beverages. There's always coffee available even for family. There are little soda cans and juice that are available. They've been very gracious. My brother lives nearby and they brought him a tray when he's come to sit and eat with her. They've made us feel really at home. They know what my mom likes, like the dietary aide knows that. She knows she likes fresh fruit, so she'll make sure she gets that. They send aides around before every meal and ask them what they would like for that meal down to what they want to drink. They get a meal plan once a week, but their order is taken before every meal. They have a regular entree. If you don't like that, there's an alternative, like a soup and sandwich or something that you could eat if you didn't like what was being served. They do special things. They try to have something in the morning and the afternoon each day for the residents of the whole place and they do their best to include them there and encourage them to take part in it. Because of the pandemic, they aren't offering as many activities as they used to. They have a crafts room, but they haven't made that available since the pandemic, and that would be nice for my mom. We're very comfortable having our mom there. We're very confident that she is getting very good care that's individualized to her needs. They've been very receptive to the concerns that we've had and things that we wanted to be included in her care. They've been very helpful."
