Situated alongside the Hudson River, Poughkeepsie is the largest city in Dutchess County and an appealing retirement option for many older adults. Hudson Valley Magazine rated Poughkeepsie as one of the region’s best places to live due to its charming historic neighborhoods, thriving sense of community and home prices that are lower than average for the area. Poughkeepsie is close to several full-service hospitals, including Vassar Brothers Medical Center, which was rated as high performing in eight procedures and conditions by U.S. News & World Report.
Nursing home care includes 24-hour supervision and skilled nursing services, plus a high level of help with activities of daily living and personal care. The average monthly rate charged by nursing homes in Poughkeepsie is $13,748, according to Genworth’s 2020 Cost of Care Survey. This is much higher than the national average of $7,756, so Poughkeepsie residents who can still maintain some level of independence might consider home care or assisted living instead.
This guide provides cost comparisons of nursing home care in Poughkeepsie with nearby cities and other kinds of senior care, as well as free programs, services and resources available to seniors in the Dutchess County area.

The hospital has put my mom into The Pines at Poughkeepsie Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation. They’ve had to move her a few different times, but she’s on a floor now where she has 24-hour monitoring. Her mind is pretty not there, but she’s still able to get up and move around a little bit, so they have to really watch her, and they have to take care of her a lot. It’s a rehab/nursing home, and it has four floors. One floor is for rehabilitation, and then another floor is for like people that need help, but they can do stuff themselves. It goes different levels like as your mind goes.
It’s nice for being in the city. It’s set in like a wooded setting, so it’s nice. It’s not a city setting, even though it’s in the city of Poughkeepsie. The staff have really been great. Everybody has been friendly and quite helpful. My mom had gone there for rehab, and when I brought her home, she needed a shot, and this medicine costs $1,500. Now, we could not afford it, so I called The Pines and the head nurse, and they had given me all of her medications that they had left because it was all done in her name, so everything that they had they gave to me (except for that shot). Well, a day later, the nurse called upstairs to the floor my mom was on and asked if they had sent it back down to the pharmacy yet, and they had not, and it was still up in the refrigerator with my mom’s name on it. This nurse went and got that medication and drove it 45 minutes one way to my mom’s house and gave her that injection she needed. That was like above and beyond. She’s the head of the nurses in that building.
I haven’t eaten there, but I’ve seen what my mother has gotten, and they definitely give very nice meals there. When they ask for snacks, like my mom wanted something sweet, she wanted a cookie, the nurse went and got her two individually wrapped cookies and brought them to her. As for activities, they were doing a barbecue for the people that could do it. One day last week when I was there, they had all these little old people in their wheelchairs outside having a barbecue. My mom is at a level where she really can’t do any activities, but they do have some very nice activities. Once a month, they have this thing in the foyer when you go in and some of these people set up a stand and they have this big popcorn machine with popcorn, and they bag it like all these little individual snacks, and all the money that they earn from that goes for the patients’ activity. That’s really nice. They do a lot for them.
The rooms are a little small, and there are two beds to a room. You just get a dresser and a little stand-up closet, and then you have to share a bathroom with no shower. The showers are out in the hallway. But the facility is nice, and they do a lot of activities with the residents that can do activities. My brother takes care of all the financials, but I know it is very expensive.

My dad was in Lutheran Care Center at Concord Village out in Poughkeepsie. They took care of my dad for the last two years of his life and they were wonderful with him. He had hospice care and he passed in July. He didn’t have hospice care when he first got there, but he ended up in hospice care for the last month and a half of his life. In between the hospice care and the staff at Lutheran, everybody was just wonderful.
The meals were kind of like nursing home food. It wasn’t terrible, but I wouldn’t say it was great. The facility was kind of dated but it was always clean and the layout was fine. They also offered activities for my dad and they were wonderful.

This rehab is horrible. I wouldn’t allow my worst enemy to go here.
Worst experience of my life!
The food is gross, poor quality, and cold, it is never ever what is on the slip with your name on it. No accounting for your medical conditions when meals are prepared (it says on the slip).
Nursing staff is either excellent or disinterested. All are overwhelmed.
Wound care is hit or miss depending on the nurse on duty. (1 per floor) Day staff is supposed to do wound care often left for the evening nurse to do.
Diapers are rarely changed, you are left for hours sitting in your own urine and feces. Ringing the bell gets you nothing.
Bells are rarely answered and shut off at the front desk all the time, I was told this by numerous staff members.
Showers are twice a week so I was told. Never had two showers in one week.
PT/OT very limited but their staff was excellent in helping me to quickly get out of that horrible facility. Also arranged for the equipment I needed to leave with.
Photos on the website are a joke. I never once saw a dining room as show, just a plastic tray brought into the room. Never once did I see a bedspread, the photos are all clearly staged.
Rooms are dirty. Cabinets for your possessions are filthy.
The extent of the activities I was offered was non existent. I was offered a newspaper to read once a day. Nothing else was offered.
Everyone who works here is overwhelmed. Place is terribly understaffed with far too many people working double shifts REGULARLY.
Do not consider this facility under any circumstances.

I was a patient at Woodland Pond at New Paltz at one time, and I have a lot of friends there, so I go there quite often. I know a lot about that particular facility, and I’m particularly interested in that one. In terms of the rehabilitation and the physical therapy, it was excellent. The room that I was in was very clean. They happened to be putting some new flooring in that particular part of the building at the time. I was checking on how they were putting in the flooring and things like that. I’m a very curious person and I like people, so I was busy meeting other people, seeing what they were doing, and how they were doing and stuff like that. I’m always interested in how things are going. I would have to say at that time they had a plumbing problem, but they fixed it very quickly. It had something to do with the temperatures.
The staff was doing their job and maybe doing even better than their job. The first or second morning I was there, I met the woman who was in charge of nursing for the rehab skilled nursing facility. She popped right into my room and helped me. That was a fantastic opportunity, and there was somebody right there.
I got to know all the cooking staff immediately. I was very curious at that time, and we had a big fight about whether I could have desserts or not because I have diabetes. I finally went out because all my numbers were good, they were busy measuring the blood glucose three times a day and everything was fine. So, at that point, I guess they denied me dessert. But the food was very good. I iked the food. Although I didn’t eat in the dining room, I ate in my room or a separate lounge room with other patients.
It’s very clean. They have a library, a swimming pool, and an exercise room. They have a tavern, maybe they call it the pub, where you can have late breakfast and visit with friends. They have a lot of activities, both on the main floor where the apartments are, where they enter the building, and in the other end of the building, where the more serious medical conditions are. There’s a room upstairs where they have a lot of activities also. So, they have a lot of things happening, as well as excellent, facility-type things happening, and it’s clean.
It’s costly; it’s very expensive to go there and stay there. I have to say it’s not economical at all. You have to buy into the place for $300,000 to $400,000. Then you have a monthly charge of, maybe one or two thousand, something in that range. I don’t know those costs specifically, I know from my friend who lives there what she pays. I have time to try to figure it out. I would have to sell my house to be able to go there, but I’m not sure if I would have enough monthly income to stay there. Those are things I have to figure out. Plus, I own a lot of original artwork. I see they have a lot of artwork on their walls. I don’t know where that artwork on the walls came from if it was owned by individual people who have moved there, and they would take that original artwork as a down payment or not. I don’t know how they work. That’s another thing I need to point out and haven’t had the time to go over and visit.
I think you get your money’s worth, but you pay a lot to get your money’s worth. So, it’s hard to say it’s not a bargain, and you can’t say it’s inexpensive.

Thank you to Quaker Hill Manor (AKA Victory Lake) staff for the wonderful care I received while I was a resident for 17 months. When I first arrived I was worried about being around resident’s who were much older than I, but once I got to know everyone I realized they were just as lively and fun to be around. The staff were so nice. They took the time to listen to my needs. Even if I was having a bad day, they still listened. Quaker Hill Manor has helped me find myself. I received positive feed back from people I didn’t even know. The activities were great. It helped keep my problems off my mind. The atmosphere of the building, trees and grass are so serene, it gave me a peaceful feeling. The food was good too. I recommended Quaker Hill Manor to anyone in need of help with self or a loved one. I just might have to go back there someday. Thanks again everyone. A.C.

My Mother is at the facility in FIshkill now.
It’s very clean.
The food is horrible.
i find it ridiculous that there is not a direct telephone # to the nurses station on the rehab floors ,24/7. My mother has dementia and called me confused about her medicines. I could not reach anyone to ask a questions in the early evening.
I can not reach the nurse practitioner to find out what blood theists are being ordered and why.
There hasn’t been hot water in 3 days. I’m sure that this is not typical but I can’t understand how this can happen. As a result, there weren’t hot meals for 2 days.
I visit 2x/day.
I had to remind staff about the showering schedule. (2x/wk only)
After one week in the facility, and at my urging, there will be a team meeting to discuss my Mother’s care.
This is my 1st experience at a skilled nursing facility. And I pray it’s my Mother’s last.

The elevator open between floors, it smells horrible. The worker has no clue about the patient, They have no clue where their patients are. We complained that the patient had to go to the bathroom and the nurse’s response is that the patient has a diaper. Many complaints were brought to the attention and as of yet, nothing has been done. I honestly think they need to get more workers and give raises to the one that is there. They should think of themselves when they get old would they like to be treated that way. The nursing home gets paid $10,000 monthly for 1 patient imagine how much they make in a month.

I believe that I have reasonable expectations for the quality of care at a nursing home especially for a short term stay. Unfortunately for my Mother, Wingate did not live up to even the most minimum standards.
She entered Wingate as spry 99 year old, walking constantly (with assistance), eating well, and performing the most basic functions independently.
She left Wingate barely able to stand having been left in bed for at least two days, weak from little to no nutrtition even though I provided supplemental snacks, and unable to take care of her bodily functions without assistance.
I do wish that Wingate would not accept patients that they are unable to adequately care for. It needs to do better.

Yesterday we were told my grandmother needed to be transferred to Hospice and had less than a month to live. We were asked at the hospital to chose 5 of our top choices for Hospice. Unsure and unresearched we chose Elant, Wappingers Falls as our #1 choice, as I live and work within walking distance of their facility. I had run past their location numerous times and was always unimpressed by the staff outside smoking cigarettes and the patients in wheelchairs placed in the front unsupervised, but at this point, in our final decision for her life, we were looking for somewhere close we could spend as much time as possible with her. Upon leaving the hospital, we stopped at the Elant as a family, on Sunday, taking a chance on seeing the facility. We were stopped immediately at the door by the "supervisor" who said we were unable to enter and look at the facility. It wasn’t until we mentioned we were private pay, that she asked for a moment and could consider giving us a tour. She left us in the "waiting room" (dusty, un-vacuumed, unattended) for 20 minutes to return saying she asked if she could give us a tour and they said no. I then proceeded to ask to speak to the supervisor as we were making my grandmothers transfer TOMORROW and without seeing the facility, it was a decision we were uncomfortable making ( especially given our experience up to this point). She disappeared again, and we glimpsed in the window into the hall way to see 5 people in wheelchairs, lined up against the wall, unattended, one of which was pulling on a dirty garbage can with her hand halfway in in to pull herself around the corner of the hallway. She returned, and by that point, we had very clearly made up our minds, but said to us " I’m sorry, I am the supervisor and I cannot give you a tour on Sunday, I got in trouble once before. But we can accommodate your grandma, since she is private pay, and the hospital can send over her paperwork". Needless to say. My impression of Elant from the outside, passing by on my morning and afternoon runs, down to the final decision of where my grandmother will spend the last few weeks of her life. This is certainly not the place. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Poughkeepsie, NY
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
