"I had grandparents at Shirkeys in the early 90s and a father in Shirkeys today. Times have changed for the better for sure in nursing homes in general and at Shirkeys. After looking at reviews and living in KCMO I wanted Dad close so I went to these highly rated homes and often found the only thing nice was the decor. The staffing was often 2 aides for 60 patients the staff was unhelpful & stopping to talk to the patients they said noone ever worked there long I felt hopeless. My Dad had friends from Richmond& insisted on checking out Shirkeys. Now Dad calls Shirkeys home he loves the staff, many have been there many years, they are always helpful and respectful to my family and friends who visit,they call you when they find the smallest bruise. No place is perfect but as families realizing that nursing homes will never give care good enough to please us doesn't mean it's not good care. My Dad is clean, happy and feels safe and in the end that makes Shirkeys worth the drive."

"Pleasant Valley Manor Care Center keeps my mom's room pretty clean. She does some activities with them, and they keep the people fairly busy. They are just understaffed and they need better varieties and more balanced meals. They're all working on those problems, though. It's just kind of hard right now."

"My mom is at Riverbend Heights Health & Rehabilitation Center. The staff does a good job and we had no problem with the move-in process. It's adequate, but it's just outdated. They have outdoor areas like a patio, and some activities such as bingo, arts and crafts, and some others. The monthly rate is expensive for me, but it's probably average for what you would have to pay."

"The staff is very caring of their residents. And treat them like they are their own family. Both my grandfather and now my grandmother have stayed at this nursing home. The doctor is there 3 times a week to care for their needs, aswell as the director. She has an open door policy and encourages the staff, residents and their families to stop in and express either their praises or concerns. With both my grandparents we have had issues with them not wanting to do as the doctor directed. They cared enough to work with them and explain why they had to do their rehab. Instead of just making them. We love this facility and are happy to have them assist us in the care of our grandmother. "

"Oakridge of Plattsburg did their job, I have no complaints about the atmosphere or quality of life provided. They provide entertainment, a clean living area, assistance. I visited a man once a week and never once did he complain or act like he didn't want to be there. He was warm and welcoming, and given his condition I must say that Oakridge made him feel at home and cared for. The facilities are older, but they are up kept. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere, although not desirable, did not make you want to go screaming for the door. "

"I've been to New Mark Care Center a number of times. The therapy part of it is just fabulous. They had every kind of therapist you could imagine. They really made you work for your hour or two-week stay, and I could really see the progress. I was just amazed. They were professional and friendly. After COVID, when I had to go there and stay in the long-term care part, I had one physical therapist, one occupational therapist, and one speech therapist. I genuinely liked the physical therapist. The occupational therapist was very good, too. The food has improved. You could get what you wanted, and it was usually pretty good. The upkeep was always excellent over there. The facility was very clean. It's an older building, but they have really worked to upgrade it. All of the rooms have roll-in showers. They really did pay attention to the details on that. They seemed to have a few activities, but most of the time everyone just got together in the common areas. My healthcare was really good about paying for it. Sometimes I have to stay there a little longer, and I end up having to pay out of pocket."

"My Aunt lived in the skilled nursing at Linden Woods for over three years. We moved her to Linden Woods from another facility. When we moved her, she could barely communicate with us but within a month of moving to Linden Woods she was talking again, playing bingo and was back to her old self. The staff was wonderful to her. Very patient and friendly. They got her out of her shell and doing activities again. I highly recommend Linden Woods."

"I visited the Rehabilitation Center. Both my parents were there for quite a while, and as far as the care facility, which is a step ot two higher in care, they're the best I've seen for that. I thought they cared for my folks well. It's the staff that made the play. The food wasn't grand, but it was OK. "

"I have only had experience with the Alzeheimer's lock down area of Carmel Hills, but I found the staff to be outstanding. They are extremely caring of their patients and are really on top of their likes and dislikes. When there is an urine smell which happens with this type of patient, they are on it right away and have housekeeping or themselves clean it up. I am sorry that other people have had bad experences with Carmel Hills but I feel that my father is being taken care of with love and concern. "

"My father-in-law is at Northland Rehabilitation, and so far, they have been great. The staff has been really nice and helpful with him. They have art classes every other day, and bingo a couple of times a week. When I was there visiting Dad, they had a gentleman entertaining the ladies and singing songs by Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, and they were having a blast."

"I got to tour Rosewood Healthcare & Rehab at The Groves yesterday. The Groves is like a campus. They have anywhere from minimal assisted living to long-term care, and then to a memory ward. We were just amazed by what we saw there. In their memory ward, they were doing a whole, complete remodel on a couple of the floors. They have a chapel on-site. They have a couple of residential doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, and nurses' aides. It is like a little city inside a big city. It was crazy. We were looking at it for long-term care because my mother is not quite at the level of assisted living; she needs a little bit more than that. They encourage social interaction. If it is private pay, they will more than likely have their own room, but if it's Medicaid pay, then they will more than likely have a roommate. They have a personality test, and they have social workers to see who would be a good fit with each other. There are all walks of life of people there. There are those who are on a completely fixed income and those who made six figures a year. There's no discrimination whatsoever. The number of people that we saw was just dipped from different cultures and different races. It was just amazing. I really enjoyed seeing all that. We met two of the weekend directors, and they were extremely knowledgeable. You could tell they had been doing this for a really long time. They answered every question, and they were honest when they said, "Hey, that's not something that we're familiar with," on a couple of questions that we asked. They were forthcoming and honest. One thing that we are looking for is how honest the staff is with us. The nurse we met was busy taking care of three floors. She was charting, but she introduced herself and talked about the floor a little bit, so that was pretty good. We saw the cafeteria, and there were quite a few residents eating. It smelled really good. The director said, "There are times when I'll eat four out of five days that I'm here." He says the food is so good here. We didn't see any of the activities that were going on. It's the weekend, so people were taking their family members out and taking them out to lunch. They don't do physical therapy on the weekends, but we get to peek into the room, and it looks like any state-of-the-art physical therapy room at any hospital."
