Nursing Home Communities in Midland, MI

"I just want to share a bit of the challenges both family members, residents and staff are going through that i see with this covid time. We as a family appreciate the communication that we have with the staff as our loved one is mentally and physically disabled and can not communicate like other residents. So many staff members show love and concern that we have some comfort knowing that with them communicating with us on a weekly or in some cases daily base its really important. I'm not saying it always goes smooth but our family member that's been at Brittany since 2012 communication is the most important for all. Our loved one is in Reflections now and the activities daily to keep them busy has shown a improvement. We sure wish that they can get the hairdressers in soon though! With no family members able to come in to help with feeding, organizing rooms/closets, visiting i just keep the staff in my prayers. We put our loved ones in Brittany because we're not able to care for them properly anymore so let them know that a thank you or a positive call will help them to continue doing the best they can do. These residents miss there families so much and it hurts us not to go in and hug on them, but the staff work daily trying to help and are there for them. Support them, we need them, and hopefully we can get back in and love our loved ones as they deserve in these latter years like they did us when we were young!!!!"

"Tendercare is not the nicest nursing home I have seen, and I do not believe that it is the best place for someone needing long-term assistance to live. I believe that the residents are under-stimulated and need more interaction and activities. The staffing seems adequate, but I believe that it would be useful for the staff to be trained with a deeper background in psychology so as to understand what motivates people and what leaves them unmotivated to participate in healthy engagement and recreational hobbies. This is a difficult job for staff members, and a difficult lifestyle adjustment for residents. This is no excuse, however, not to have regular interactions. I believe that they need additional social opportunities. Although they have all the makings for a successful nursing home, I believe that they are not utilizing their resources. Their residents are just aching for attention and activities to hold their interest. We must remember that when a person no longer has the ability to completely care for themselves, their minds still need stimulation and they need to feel a part of a community. Until additional opportunities for involvement are put into place, I cannot recommend Tendercare. "

"Three years ago, when our mom was 94, she decided to move from Chicago to an assisted living arrangement in Midland. Our family thought Colonial Villa was the best fit for mom, and we were delighted when an opening became available. Now, after three years, we could not be more pleased with how well everything has worked out for mom and our family. From the beginning, mom has appreciated not only the atmosphere and physical amenities of Colonial Villa, but more importantly, the competent and caring staff. The staff is a supportive family and always treats mom with kindness and respect. In a gentle, courteous way, they help mom participate in the wide variety of activities at Colonial Villa under highly skilled leadership. We appreciate the staff's sensitivity in their interactions with residents. The staff provides compatible, supportive and enjoyable meal times and a safe and healthy daily life for all residents at Colonial Villa. "

"When my father had an extended hospital stay for COPD, that left him very weak, he needed an inpatient rehabilitation facility to help him get strong enough to be able to go home again. He stayed for five weeks at Stratford and was able to eventually return home. We had visited three area facilities before making our choice, and really liked Stratford Village Nursing Home, so we chose to place my father in that facility.My mother and I ate several meals there with my father, and the food was very good. The staff was friendly, even when my father got agitated and lashed out with some harsh words at times. Their response time, when my father pushed his call light, was rather slow (roughly 10 to 12 minutes each time), and the doctor was only there once a week, and doctors took turns, so the times when the doctor would be there varied, which made it very difficult to talk to the doctor if you had a question or problem, because you never knew when they would be there.Also, the doctors and the six residents took turns providing care at Stratford, so each one would have to have each patient repeat their history when they would see them on their week, because it was a different doctor almost every week, so the continuity of care was broken. I found it odd that any patient in the clinic or hospital affiliated with this nursing home would have both the resident and their supervising physician caring for the patient; whereas, at the nursing home, the resident physicians were allowed to see the patients without the supervising physician present, making one think that the nursing home patients are not as important as other patients.The staff did not bathe my father very often, and we had to request that they bathe him at least twice a week, after we found out that he had gone two weeks without a bath. The physical therapists were really good. They did a nice job in working with him and getting him strong enough to go back home to be with his family. My father did not like the fact that the social worker at the nursing home would hold meetings with him every other week and kept telling him he was depressed, when he was really just sad that he could not be home with his family. My father's mental capacity was fine, and he did fine on the all the tests for depression they would have him fill out, but the social worker still kept telling him she thought he was depressed.All in all, I still think Stratford Village was the best of the three facilities we toured and that we made the correct choice in placing him there. They did achieve the goal of getting him back home to be with our family, where he was able to stay for five more weeks until he passed away. We think the care my father received there was good care, and, we recommended it to my uncle, who is there now. "

"My grandmother is in The Colonnades. It is a great experience for her. She is very happy. We were concerned that she was not going to happy and she wasn't going to like it, but she really likes it. One of the big things is that she is more active, and they actually have outings, and she's enjoying going on outings. That is great too. I think the rooms are pretty big. It has a nice living area, a really big bathroom, and a really big separate bedroom. So, I think they are a good size for the price. She is a very picky eater and she says the food is very good. I picked her up one day and she was eating salmon, and they had apple cake and it looked really yummy. I didn't taste it, but it looked good. I think that the one thing that I like about The Colonnades is that it really brought back my grandmother's independence and her being able to go out in the community again because from last June until she was placed there, she wasn't able to go out as much. So, I really like the fact that she is able to go out and to the casino like she used to in the past. I think the atmosphere is great. It is very well kept up and very clean. It seems all the other residents are happy. I do have one suggestion, and she complained about it one time. They can only take so many people who are in a wheelchair for outings, and she has to hurry up and rush to have her name on the list because there's always one person who's on the list before her. "

"I visited a friend in the facility. What impressed me the most was how clean it was, that was very important to me. I thought it was a lovely place to stay if you had to be in a nursing home. My friend treasured the fact that they had mass there for the residents who couldn't leave to go to church. In fact, they even served them communion! She just beamed with joy! The people that worked there were smiling and welcoming. My friend said she enjoyed the food as well! The nursing home nourished her body as well as her soul! It was decorated to be like you were at home; very welcoming! They had a lovely dining room with tables that sat about four people to a table to make it intimate. They had a lovely living room area where you could sit and talk. I spoke to a few other people there and they said they liked it too. They had rocking chairs there, which were comfortable. There were safety features as well; an alarm went off if the residents tried to leave the building to keep them safe if they problems with memory. Her room was nice and she had a nice roommate. I felt that if I ever had to put my mother in law in a nursing home, this would be a wonderful place for her to live! "
