My mother is in rehab right now at Lake Harris. It’s a very efficiently run facility. The people are very professional. They have a more than adequate nursing and managerial staff. They’re very conscientious about who comes in and who exits the building. They keep track of that with a special system where you have to log in and log out whenever you visit one of the patients or a resident. They’re more than adequately meeting my mom’s needs right now. The staff is very cooperative, and they really care about the people there. I haven’t had any problems getting questions answered or getting help with issues. They always have a wide variety of food on their menu and she’s been happy with it. It’s a relatively new facility and in good physical repair. The place is kept clean, there’s adequate parking, and it’s easy to get in and out of. They also have security on the premises. She’s receiving everything that the doctors order her to have as far as her physical rehabilitation, all her medications, and everything involved with her care. They even do her laundry for her.

My mother is doing rehab in Lake Harris Health Center Skilled Nursing. The first week she was fighting them and not doing the therapy, but now she’s calmed down and is doing the therapies. She liked the nurses and aides, so it’s all going well now. The staff is friendly and helpful, she likes them all. There’s only one she doesn’t like saying she’s mean to her, this staff probably makes her get up and do things that’s why. I can’t get in to see the room but my wife says it’s a very nice room they put her in. Earlier she was in isolation but now her room is like a home setting. I was able to visit before they shut it down. They bring her on a screen-enclosed porch and I sit outside the porch and we talk from like 8 feet away. She says the food is pretty good. There are a couple of meals she doesn’t like, but for the most part she says it’s good. They seem to be very good. Now that they’re moving along with her therapy, they call me once a week, and we have like a conference call where they have the therapist, nurse, and case worker come into the conference room. They’ve done that for several weeks. That’s very helpful in getting information and knowing what she’s doing and not doing. They also seem to be cooperative, they’re nice, and easy to deal with, so I think it’s great. The place looks very nice, everything looks clean and elderly, and they just repainted the drive.

My dad went into the facility after being in the hospital. He had C-Diff and required antibiotics through an IV. His first few days were OK. Nurses and CNA’s were for the most part attentive. He was moved to another wing due to the number of Covid cases on his wing. His new room had no heat. This was a bad situation because the temperature outside were 32 degrees. His room stayed at 54. I bought him a heating blanket which helped but didn’t solve the issue. I reported it all weekend but to no avail. The facility was short handed which meant no quality care. At one point, it took someone to attend to him 28 minutes. He requested paper towels but was not refilled. His phone did not work; it couldn’t receive phone calls. We reported the problem but was not addressed as were other issues. The room was not cleaned; only the trash was taken out. One day, I had to request his lunch because his food was not on the cart and he was overlooked.

My dad was at South Campus Rehab and Nursing Center. He had congestive heart failure and had difficulty walking. He had been in the hospital for a while, but they sent him over there supposedly to get him back on his feet so he could go home. They tried to send therapists in to help him with everything each day and there was some that were better than others.
The rooms were okay. They had two beds in each room, but they were kind of close together and were kind of cramped. The beds were not very good. He had to have his changed a couple of times. I did not think it was really all that nice. Sanitation was okay. The staff was not bad. They were pretty good and attentive.

My brother is staying at The Villages Rehab & Nursing Center. It’s been good and the therapies have been helping him. I haven’t tried the food, but my brother seems to like it. The amenities are pretty basic, they have a couple of community areas where people can gather and eat their meals, and they have a gym there. It’s not quite on par with the other senior living I toured, but it does what it does. It’s for rehabilitation and nursing, so it’s a different experience. The staff is good, the social worker, therapists, they answer my questions. The cleanliness and upkeep is very good. In fact, when you go there, they’re very strict about the COVID protocol. You definitely have to have a mask, definitely have to sign a form, and definitely have to have their temperature taken. They won’t even let you in the door until that’s all done.

My mother was at AdventHealth Care Center Waterman. It’s a skilled nursing and rehab, and that’s what the doctor suggested that my mother go to. It’s a fabulous place. I cannot say enough good things about it. It was fantastic in every way. The ladies working in admissions were professional, helpful, caring, and just delightful. The nursing staff was very attentive and very empathetic toward my mother. The facility is beautiful and clean. If I had to say anything at all in a critical way, the food is not great. We brought her snacks and things, but I would give it a very high rating. The staff were professional, very helpful, caring and knowledgeable. They were gentle with my mother (who had suffered from a head injury), and she was in a very delicate condition. There were plenty of staff members, so everything was really terrific.
The facility is very clean and modern. It’s new. It’s just two years old, but it is open, airy, and very pleasant with soothing color tones and artwork. There were activities going on all the time in the facility. My mother elected not to participate; she did not want to be there. She was ill and just did not want to be anywhere but home. They would bring her a newsletter and a calendar. There was a full activities calendar. At one point, I asked for some soft music to be played in her room. They immediately brought me a CD player with some nice music selections, so they were very responsive.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Leesburg, FL
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
