At an average monthly rate of $7,787, nursing home care in Fresno is quite affordable in comparison to California’s statewide average of $9,247, making Fresno a good option for budget-conscious seniors who require long-term nursing care. Fresno also has a number of home health care providers and other services geared toward older adults, and area hospitals include the Fresno Heart & Surgical Hospital, Saint Agnes Medical Center and UCSF Fresno-affiliated Community Regional Medical Center.
Nursing homes provide 24/7 skilled nursing care in a highly specialized, institutional setting for those who can’t be safely supported at home or in an assisted living facility. In California, nursing homes are highly regulated by the state to ensure resident safety, and facilities must have at least one licensed medical professional on-site at all times.
This guide provides an overview of nursing home costs in Fresno and nearby cities. There’s also a list of the average rates for other types of long-term care, and links to community-based resources for Fresno seniors and their caregivers.

The Terraces at San Joaquin Gardens rehab was wonderful. My uncle stayed there and he said great things about them. He was very happy with them. They have apartments there. They have independent living all the way to rehab and skilled nursing. It’s an absolutely beautiful place. I couldn’t have been happier with the environment, the staff, and the care. They’re accommodating with the food. If you don’t like what they’re making, they make you whatever you want. All he did there was physical therapy.

I go back to that facility every month for a meeting with my multiple sclerosis support group. It is a very nice facility. It was A1. No complaints here at all. The staff were kind. I have type II diabetes so they were very careful. What was nice was that every night at bedtime, they give you a little packet of sugar free Blue Bunny ice cream.

The staff soon put us all at ease and went out of their way to make him feel comfortable. Our family was very hands on and at the facility a great deal of time. This meant the poor staff not only had to cater to Dads needs but to ours as well. They were amazing!!! I am thankful for these dedicated, and professional fun employees. Keep up the good work. I will miss you and many of the clients you serve. You have very difficult jobs and do a wonderful service for our community. Thank you all

This place is horrible and that’s in light words. My grandmother was a long time resident. I would watch residents begging for help and staff would walk by laughing while focusing on their personal cellphones. Residents would be served meals that I wouldn’t even serve my worse enemy. My grandmothers personal belonging were stolen numerous times including her wedding ring. I reported it, and I was told that they would look into it. Till the day she died nothing was ever done to investigate that claims. The staff is very rude and unprofessional. I would go see my grandmother daily just because of lack of confidence that I had in the staff to take care of her. I wanted to transfer her to another facility and was given the run-a-round that I wasn’t able too. This place is a joke and needs to be investigate by the state of California.

But I liked that they have a nice large room where the family can congregate, and play area for children. I did like that the rooms can accommodate the different ages. The bedroom was totally different from a medical room. I suggest they update their facility if possible. The staff were accomodating all the way through. They exceeded my expectations. I would recommend this place to other people.

The facility is kind of an old building and kind of run down as far as the way the environment looks, but it was more of the care that I cared about. There were activities, but my grandma was not in the position to participate in them. They had a hair lady come in every other week to do their hair, and my grandma had that one. That is very convenient that they have a beautician come in.

This is an older 89 bed skilled nursing facility that could use a small facelift; they’ve started replacing some of the flooring. The grounds are nice; they have a nice gated patio. They also have an uncovered patio that is not secure and could be a problem if a patient roamed because of the busy street. The rooms are semi-private with 2 to 4 per room, clean, and some have sliding patio doors for viewing outdoors. Patients needing feeding assistance were gathered in the dining room for lunch. I didn’t detect any obnoxious odors. The meal menu was typical hospital food; I didn’t see any fresh items. The patients that I saw were clean and I didn’t hear anyone asking for help.

I was moved here from St. Jude’s for recovery, treatment and physical therapy. I’ll keep this as short as I can. Upon entering, a distinct and unpleasant odor hit me, immediately giving me bad vibes. On a positive note, you get used to it. The nurses were caring and friendly with me, also a positive. One other positive were the therapists; good crew when I was there a handful of years back. They were friendly and helpful. Now for the food. Absolutely TERRIBLE. I felt like it couldn’t get more unpalatable. I’ve never been to prison, but I can’t imagine it being worse. It was so bad, I had family bring real food in from the outside. And I can eat nearly anything. This was simply atrocious. As others have mentioned, there were police nearly always in the hallways, standing guard outside a random room. At least we knew where the felons were residing. Heard gunshots one night, uncomfortably close to the facility. So to sum up, the staff were friendly and helpful, not being timely only a handful of times over the course of nearly three months. The food though was terrible, the biggest complaint I had. I can only hope things have improved since. The day I was released to the comfort of my home was a godsend. It’s just not the most comfortable and happy place to be while recovering. Thankfully, I’m fairly good at adjusting to not the best situations.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Fresno, California
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
