With 310 days of sunshine, low humidity and good air quality, it’s no wonder Albuquerque seniors enjoy calling the “Duke city” home. Seniors can take public transportation for 35 cents to the six senior centers across the city, accessing the vibrant mix of educational, social and physical activities offered. Residents 65 and older who wish to have a new educational experience can take classes at the University of New Mexico for $5 per credit hour. The close proximity to nature and breathtaking Sandia mountain sunsets offer more reasons why over 76,000 seniors 65 and over call Albuquerque home.
To help seniors discover the most senior-friendly locations around the country, Caring.com conducted a new study, “The Best and Worst Places for Senior Living.” The Caring Senior Living Report analyzes and ranks 300 cities and 50 states on the quality of senior living in that area. The cities were graded using 46 metrics across five categories: Health Care, Senior Living & Housing, Affordability, Quality of life, and Transportation.

"My sister moved to Haven Care Cottonwood. They have a beautiful yard, but my sister won't go out. It's just accessible. It meets her needs. She has her privacy, and that is what I like. I didn't want something with a big dining area. It's good for somebody who's got dementia because they take good care of them and they get good care and they take people for all levels of care. This is a good place for her because she doesn't bother with it and she doesn't like to do activities. I think they treat the people well. What I like about it is, that she gets good care because there are only five people there and most places are overloaded and understaffed. She paid less than the other places for that level of care. She gets almost the care that you get in a nursing home with less money."

The staff was extremely accommodating and I was invited to stay for dinner which was delicious . The residents welcomed us with open arms. I’m so very happy for my friend."

"We toured Coronado Villa Retirement Resort. There weren't any negatives, it was just a little pricey, so it was out of my parents' price range. It's a very nice resort style type of community. The nice thing is there's no buy in. You have a variety of choices, anywhere from studio to two bedroom, two bath as far as apartments. They are good sized and very updated. The staff who gave us the tour was very knowledgeable and very friendly. They have residents who are willing to like open up the door for my parents to view the apartment, which was nice of them. There was a beauty barber salon, pool, a movie room, bingo, and there's happy hour. They had a separate restaurant that was more of fine dining. So, if my parents wanted to have a nicer meal versus just going to the regular dining hall, they could do that."

"We toured Brookdale Valencia. I think it's a good community, but I don't know if my brother could afford it. Also, it's not in a good part of town, but the only thing is, it is a gated area, so that's fine. The staff was very personable and willing to help. We went through the dining area and saw what they were serving, and it looked okay. The facility was very clean. It's a big place, and the rooms were nice and good."

"My wife is now at BeeHive Homes of Albuquerque. She is in her second month now. One of the reasons she's there is because it's close to our house. It's on the same street our house is on, and so I go there at least twice a day. I think BeeHive Homes is very good. The nursing staff there doesn't give a lecture to the patient. They just go in and fix whatever is needed. I have tried their food. It's not bad; I had a little bite this morning 10 minutes ago. They're changing meals right now because they're changing cooks. My wife is in a room by herself. We took stuff there, which we're allowed to. We even went and bought a small portable refrigerator to put stuff in because she didn't have a refrigerator in her room, and they let us do it. Her room could hold a large bed if you had one, but I wouldn't want to put a larger bed in there. The facility is peaceful. The staff members are good folks. They care about you. They'll listen to you when you need to talk. They have a special microphone that you put around your neck. It's got a little button that you push when you need help. They have a couple of people who take care of the ones in one building, and I think part of the ones in the second building, but they will come and see you within 10 minutes. They even had a guy come by and work on my wife's toes because she was not walking well yesterday. He had an appointment with three others in our building to work on their toes. Or if that wasn't what they needed, he would give them exercises to do. They take people outside to walk around if they're able to walk. My wife can't do too much. But one day last week, I was walking in the front door and 20 feet away, my wife was sitting at the piano playing it. With regard to dining, you can eat out of the room in the dining room, or you can eat in your room."

"MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care of Albuquerque was excellent on all levels, but it was expensive. I just looked at the assisted living side. It's a newer facility, so everything is really nice facility-wise. It's all well maintained, bright, and shiney. I think it's been open for about less than five years, so it was a very nice facility. If it wasn't so expensive, it may have been my number two. Price-wise, it's just too much. It was going to be at least $12000, and it would probably end up being more. They have amenities like barbershops and beauty salon. Morningstar was top notch all the way down the line, but it was pricey. They had in-house physical therapy and occupational therapy. They had a barber/beauty salon, and they had the same type of activities as other places. It was really nice. We had so many options in terms of floor plans that were available. It's conveniently located for us, my family, and my parents' doctors. I got to talk to one of their residents, and she had only been there for about 2-3 months. She said they take really good care of her. It appeared to me that the staff took good care of their residents, based on my interaction with one of the residents and that was without anybody else from the facility around. I just ran into her out into the courtyard in front of the facility, and struck up a conversation. "

"I lived at Paloma Landing Retirement Community. It's a beautiful place. They have three meals a day. They have a lot of activities for older people. There are three floor sections. I didn't like the third floor, but they wouldn't move me downstairs to the first floor. They said they never had any openings, but I know for a fact that they do have openings, so I got kind of upset and I left, but I regret it a lot. It's a very nice place. I really recommend it highly. It's independent living. You have to take care of yourself. If you need help, you can always bring the help that you need. You can hire nurses yourself if you want to. The food was great. There's no complaints about the food. They offer everything you can think of. They even have a bus to take you wherever you want to go. It's the best place there is in Albuquerque."

"Everything about Bear Canyon Estates was wonderful. The rooms were very spacious and they were very well equipped for the handicapped. Each room had a little balcony of its own. So, it was just wonderful. They were awesome. Each one has their balcony and they have a game room where people are playing cards or dominoes. They have physical therapy and stuff. So they have a lot of amenities that are just perfect if mom was able to get around."

"I toured Brookdale Tramway Ridge, and it looked very good. The person who gave me the tour was very good and had a lot of information. The facility looked very clean and organized. They have two stages for memory care. They have an apartment for someone who is in the early stages of dementia and a group living in another section, so I found it interesting that they have two different options for memory care."

"I am staying at Sandia Vista Senior Living and the place is very good. The upkeep is excellent, and the staff and the services they provide are very satisfactory. There's no problem with the cleanliness and it's just very pleasant overall. There's a lot that they offer in terms of activities. They have art classes, bingo, puzzles, different games, and lots of trips. The food is very good too, I like what they have been serving.
