I visited this facility

I liked The Homestead of Olathe except for the fact that they had carpeting. I think carpeting in a place where you have memory care, there's gonna be accidents. I was in maintenance for part of my career and no matter how good the cleaning is, there's no way you can get everything out of it. The hard floors are much better for something like memory care because those can be cleaned up very well. The people there were exceptional. The girl who walked us around was not the salesperson. She was like a CNA or something like that. So, she's not even used to doing that kind of stuff, but she was very helpful and very respectful. You see a few things happen when you were there and they were taken care of right away. They asked me if I could please wait just a minute and she ran and took care of something on one of the residents. They were very, very reactive to the residents there. I want my wife to have someone who's really going to care about her and be ready to jump into it right there. The lady got back to me. Everything was very nice there. They accept Medicaid once the resident is not able to pay. I didn't have a meal with them, but it smelled good. The aides and the people who were attending to the residents were very, very helpful. I can see them moving around there to the different residents.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My sister moved to The Homestead of Olathe. We chose it because I like the director and they had a room for her. They're also going to help with Medicaid at the end of next year. The room was very nice. I like it a lot. The staff is very good and very efficient and they have lots of them. They have a dining area. They do different activities for them and art classes and different things like that. They have a TV room and a movie room. The price is about the same as everywhere.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My father moved into The Homestead of Olathe. They worked with him, but after a month he passed away. They were nice. Everybody seemed like they cared, but I don't feel like I was notified of all the medicines they were giving to him because they had so many side effects. One of them, when I looked it up, it said that it should not be given to the elderly. I don't have proof, but I know what I've seen on their websites and stuff on the drugs that they were giving him. I didn't like how they took care of his clothing, and they didn't keep the room as clean as they should have, especially for the amount of money you're paying. They could have been a lot better. Some of the staff were okay, and some didn't care. My dad always said that he was happy with the food.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Homestead of Olathe Memory Care is exceptional. There is assisted living and my mother-in-law is on the memory care side. What we like best about it is the patience of the nurses and the staff. I have a difficult mother-in-law so I would say their patience is just huge. She's very difficult and needy, but they just give her a lot of their time, patience, and effort. They're just amazing, kind, and just really, really good people. The rooms are huge and they're clean. There are large windows, heating and air conditioning, nice wood floors, a big bathroom, and big walk-in closets. The atmosphere is typical of memory care. It's not like the people in independent living there because they have a disability so lots of people are in wheelchairs or walkers. It's what you would expect for memory care. It's not like people are having a cocktail party. It's nothing that I would want to ever live in, and I'm sure I've seen enough of them, but I wouldn't want to live in it. The food, I hear, is good. I have not eaten there, but I've seen the menu and I've seen them eating and it's fine by me. They have a person that comes in twice a week who sings and plays the piano. They have little projects they do like art projects. They have movie nights with popcorn. They could have movie nights every night if they want to. They keep these residents very busy. They don't want them to hang out in their rooms because they'd be lonely so they keep them out and about as much as possible until it's time to go to sleep. There is a courtyard and bird feeders so it's a busy place and a lot is going on. The building is a little outdated, but most of our homes are all outdated. It's not like you can constantly update. It needs some updating like the hallways are just darker and it's a snuggly little facility. I live in a very bright windowed home so when I go there, it feels dark, but that's just because of what I'm surrounded by. However, my mother-in-law's very happy there and she's very hard to please. There's a lot of places that are more expensive, more conveniently located, but Olathe is a suburb of Kansas City that's a little bit west so it's not like it's around the corner from me. The further out you go, you get more bang for your buck. I think it's great and it's good for us. It's not a $10,000 deal, but it's certainly not inexpensive so I'm very happy with the cost because we can afford it.
