Memory Care Communities in Leawood, KS

"The thing I was interested in was some respite care for 2 to 3 nights and Stratford Commons seemed to have a very nice facility for that. It was very home-like, and everybody seemed happy there. I saw a nice room that would be used for respite care. It was a little living area with a couch and then a separate room with no door but with a bed, a bath, and a little kitchenette. "

"I picked Mission Chateau because it was very clean and very new. I didn't notice any odors or anything like that. It's also very close to my home. My mom moved in last month. They're doing the best they can in the circumstances that we are in right now. They've had a lot of turnover, and I think they're a relatively young facility. I just think that they need some additional training on how to treat people with memory care. I think the food is really good. They keep her very busy. They're in a Covid lockdown because they've had an outbreak. Prior to this outbreak, she was very busy. She doesn't have Covid, so she could leave her room; however, all activities have been canceled because of the Covid outbreak."

"My mother has moved into Sunrise of Overland Park. I chose this community because I felt like they were concerned more about my loved than about the money. I felt like the other community that I was looking at was more concerned about the money aspect of it than what my mother's care needs would be. Her move-in experience was very good. I have no complaints about Sunrise. Their sales director is absolutely excellent. I have had discussions with their executive director, who was fantastic. I have not had the food, but my mother seems to enjoy the food very much. Her apartment is nice. It is an older building, but for as old as what I was told the building is, I think the maintenance has been kept up very well. I don't really have any complaints about her room. They have an activities director and a wellness director, they have activities specifically for memory care, and I'm sure they have other activities for the assisted living side as well. The memory care area is a separate unit on its own. I'm not there during the day, so I really don't know what activities they're doing. I know that mom is participating because I'm told that she is participating."

"I chose Brookdale because the staff all seemed very capable and pleasant. They all knew the names of all the patients. Even the executive director would greet patients with hugs. I hadn’t been in a place where the executive knew the patients. He moved in there just two days ago. I was there for one meal that looked and smelled good. There’s four sections and each section had its own dining room. There’s a living room, dining room, and a kitchen in each apartment. When we visited the place, it seemed there were a lot of people who participated in the programs, and I saw programs that I thought my husband would like. They had a special computer that the activities director used that gives them a lot of things that they can do, like programs about birds and '60s rock n’ roll dance. I like the staff. If you give them feedback on what’s going on with your loved one in there, they respond right away and try to do something about it. "

"My husband is at Morningside Place. Generally, it's a fine place. The problems have been caused by the quarantining and the pandemic. It throws everybody into a state of behavior that you have to figure out as you go along. I think they've done a pretty good job of it. As far as I can tell, his care is satisfactory, but it's hard to communicate with the staff. They're very, very careful about the virus.They're good people, they try hard, and they do a fine job."

"My mother-in-law is doing well so far at The Village at Carroll Park. We chose it because it was really clean. Everybody in there was super efficient and nice. The price was much more reasonable than any of the others that we looked at. When we moved her in, it was amazing how they handled it and everything. It worked out really well. She's in memory care, and the staff was all good. I didn't actually sample the food myself, but she ate every bite and she liked it. It's nothing fancy, but the care they give and the people there impressed me. They have a church, and they have activities. She had to get a semi-private room because that was all she could afford, but there was plenty of room in there for her. She has a chair, a television, a bed, and a table in there."

"Garden Villas of Lenexa was a very nice place. The residents were very happy. I actually know someone who has been there and enjoyed it very much. I liked their services. The apartment they showed me was a studio and it was nice and clean. It just wasn't what I was looking for. There were a lot of activities going on. People were doing various things like playing cards, and they were actually getting ready to do another activity. The staff was very pleasant."

"My wife is at The Village at Mission. I think they have good people there. It's just their attention is limited (my wife had two issues there), but their attention was good. The food is also good. It's kind of bland in a way, but generally, it's OK. They can get her in a wheelchair and take her to breakfast. The facility is clean. The people are OK. They had different room options. They even have a few with two bedrooms. They only have one nurse (the one who evaluates my wife and evaluates different people) and she is just one out of several hundred people they have. So, it is a pretty busy operation for one person. They could take my wife to the doctor if she has an appointment or needs to see a doctor. They are friendly, and nice, and they react to issues. They have a lot of activities going on like getting together and people playing music in the evenings. It's expensive."

"I liked the cleanliness, space, friendliness of the employees and how they set up their community. The staff was very knowledgeable about their residents and what they offer. They gave me a little bag of cookies from their kitchen. In the independent living facility, they had a stove and refrigerator. In the assisted living facility, they had a mini-fridge. They do have outdoor spaces and a patio area for games and seating."

"It was a little nicer. This was my second preference. There’s a pleasant beauty shop, and everyone was extremely nice in this community. "

"The Sweet Life Shawnee facility is specifically geared toward Alzheimer's and Dementia patients. It is a sister facility to another, larger, Brookdale facility about a mile away. This one has greater security to prevent residents from getting lost or wandering off the property by accident. The location is quiet and peaceful, across a quiet street from a pretty, residential neighbourhood, but only a couple of blocks from a bustling suburb with lots of shopping and dining options. The layout of the facility is arranged in three "neighbourhoods" around several common areas, and each neighbourhood has a fenced, open-access garden area. The common areas are split into two large spaces, with a number of smaller "life skill stations" such as a gardening bench and a jewellery boutique. Residents are encouraged to participate in a full schedule of social activities from 10 am to 6:30 pm. When I was there, I saw a group of about 8 residents taking an exercise class. They were all smiling and several even shouted "woohoo" after finishing sets. Bedrooms are a good size, and are bright, with large windows and wood blinds. Residents are encouraged to bring their own furniture and decorations, so for those who have not decorated, furnishings are sparse. I saw two groups of residents working with a staff member: both were smiling and seemed attentive, and my guide knew the names of all the residents we met. This is an intimate facility with a feeling of personal caring, and I would recommend this facility to a loved one. "

"We chose Carnegie Village for my friend. It is wonderful! The staff is the best. Everybody that we've met there is friendly. They've gone out of their way to make her feel comfortable and get things set up for her. It has a bright feeling. She has been invited by the residents to join activities, of which there's always something going on. Every night they have games or activities of some sort. They have a full dining room in the evening, and the food is wonderful with specials for the residents. "

"My father lives at The Ashton on the Plaza. The care that they give is phenomenal. They do what they say they're going to do. They check on my father every two hours through the night. He's always clean and everything. The staff is friendly and really caring. The food is great. The chef does a good job at seasoning the food. I think some of the carpet in the rooms could be either cleaned or changed. Other than that, the facility is clean. He does painting and music, and he has physical therapy in the building. He's been to several places, and I would say it's worth it."

"It so far has been very good. I chose this place for my mother because they have memory certification. I wanted a place for when my mom progresses so we wouldn't have to move her again. The staff is very friendly and caring. Their rooms are outstanding, the place is practically brand new. They have nice common areas and very comfortable living areas. We got her a one-bedroom, which is the biggest; they have two choices: the studio and one-bedroom. They have events, but in the COVID environment everything has been curtailed. But in the normal world, they would take them to play bingo and on outings. They have really nice dining facilities, but right now everyone is eating in their rooms. It is expensive."
