I've chosen Brookdale Santa Barbara for my husband. Their place is very clean and very comfortable. He is taking a little time to get acclimated to his surroundings, but every day it's better. The staff is wonderful and very accommodating. I think I've made a good choice. He's in a shared room, but he's the only occupant right now. The way the room is set up, he has to go through the other resident's room to go out, so I'm hoping that he'll be comfortable in his room before someone is there that he has to bypass all the time. They have a lot of things to offer. They try to encourage activities, but I don't think he has done anything yet. They do physical activities as much as they can. They have a big screen TV that they show exercise films on or exercise sites and the residents do exercises. They have an outdoor court, but it's been too hot for them to go out there. They have entertainment come in. The staff is very accommodating. They're very hands-on. It's a relatively small community, so they know all the residents and know them by name. The whole staff is comfortable with everybody. It's very convenient. It's right down the street from my house.

My mom is a resident of Brookdale Santa Barbara, and so far, it's been really good. I think it's clean. They're very caring towards the people that are here and are very attentive to them. They're always friendly and I feel my mom is happy since she's been here. She's got a large room with a bathroom that doesn't have a shower. It's kept clean and tidy. They also do her laundry. They have arts and crafts, some yoga, and a church group that comes out for karaoke. I feel they're very stimulated. They also have dogs and therapy through that. They're very animal friendly. And I think the staff, say, a secretary, do more than just that, they're part of the community. I think the people that work here are very involved with all the people. They also have a salon and a library. They give me updates when I come in. I'm pretty much here every other day, so I do get to see them. I think it's not very large, so it's nice for my mother, and she feels very welcomed. I also think that the staff ratio, too, is important. I think they've been very accommodating. Between the meals and the snacks, they also get the care. I don't see her depressed or anything. I feel that they know who comes in and who goes to who. You just can't come in, you have to be buzzed in and you have to be buzzed out. So, they know who's in the house and why those people are in the house.

We have chosen Brookdale Santa Barbara for my brother. His furniture is there and it's all ready for him to go. I'm very pleased with what I have seen over there so far. The community is very lovely and very light. The rooms are really good. It's fairly new, so it's a very nice place. The people there are extremely friendly and very helpful. The person who gave me the tour was very helpful and very patient. He answered all the questions I had, explaining everything. They have a lot of activities going on. They have games, they have a nice outdoor area, all closed in, of course, and they have karaoke. Two days a week, they have a woman come in and she leads everybody in singing. It's nice.

Brookdale Santa Barbara was very nice. The rooms were very large, nice, and it had just been newly remodeled so it's in very good condition. It's very attractive, and clean. The double rooms were large, and good-sized. They had a chapel, and a salon but I don't recall seeing a pool. The dining area was very nice. It was a community dining room where everybody dined together. The kitchen was nice. It was newly remodeled. It was clean, orderly, and people seemed content. I saw some of the clients watching TV, ans I spoke to some of the ladies who were all very nice. The only thing I thought was a little confusing there is that it went around in a big square. You could walk around the whole floor, and I thought it would be difficult to find your room if you're a confused person. Especially if you're new; you could end up walking around a couple of times before you could find your room.

Mom has been there for 8 months give or take, it is a clean place, kept up good, assisted part needs to improve, but I will say, those that are there are just barely there, that is the nature of alzheimer/dementia diagnosis, I get this, but rooms/bathrooms are not cleaned as I feel they should be, food is okay according to mom, not great (too much chicken), I feel not enough staff on duty to help or assist them, but I called and the executive director could not tell me the difference in pricing between private and semi private rooms, I do find a problem with this. Can anyone give me info that she could not?

Brookdale Santa Barbara was very dark and dated. It smelled and was just disgusting. It’s totally unacceptable for my mom and nowhere as clean as the other places we saw. There was rubbish by the doors in the back. The chef took us around. The people were very nice, but I felt that the way it was laid out was far too confusing and very depressing. It went around in a big circle of halls. My mother would have never found her way around. I wouldn’t want her there.

For me, Brookdale Santa Barbara was the closest, and I had my mother evaluated for another facility. What came out of the evaluation was that she needed memory care. And this facility does only memory care -- Alzheimer's and dementia. I like it because it is small, they only have 38 people, and there is a lot of personal care. You get to know the people as you see the same people all the time. My mother hasn't been there long enough yet for me to give a clear evaluation on her care. There are a couple of things I saw that I am not pleased with that I need to addressed, and then I'll know. My mother seems to be happy there; she said everybody is nice. Both times I was there, I ran into patients, and they were the ones who recommended the place. They said that they like it and that my mom would like it there too. So the attitude from the patients was very positive. My mother is in a shared room, and it has the most space I ever saw in a shared room because it is almost like a private room; they just share a bath. She actually has her own private space, and everything that was in her room at home is in her room now. I sat with my mother while she ate. The food looked good, it smelled good, and it was plentiful. Actually, it was a lot of food. She couldn't eat all the food they gave her and even declined dessert because she had enough food. They gave them snacks very regularly. I have seen them come around often with snacks and something to drink. They seem to be very attentive. The dining room is very nice because it is like a private dining room. They have two different dining rooms, and each dining room has like 20 to 25 people in it. It is much more personal with table cloths and cloth napkins -- very nice. I noticed too that her laundry was getting laundered regularly, so that was also good. It is very secure, and visitors cannot even get in and out unless somebody buzzes them in. You ring a bell, and somebody has to come and let you in. When you want to leave, you have to find somebody to let you out, so you cannot go in and out on your own. The people that I went through the interview with were very helpful and very friendly. The other thing I noticed was that the daughters of the other patients were very involved in the care. I went in on weekends and another daughter was doing the activities with the people. They do take the people out in the public rooms with activities. They don't leave them sitting around in their rooms.

I went on a tour and the facility looks nice. The rooms were of average size and they are clean. The staff are very nice. They had a nice area outside where the residents can hang out under the trees and they also had a popcorn machine located outside.

I very much liked the layout and decoration of this facility. It was arranged in a circle which was good for my father who wandered the halls alot: he could walk continuously without hitting a dead end. Some of the rooms were very homey such as the room with the pool table for the guys, the tv lounge and the kitchen where they would have afternoon baking sessions. The staff were very friendly to the patients and to the guests and many of them were there for several years - consistency is good. They also had a very active hobby room, some birds. The location is convenient for visiting and near to doctors for appointments. My father's room was a nice size and his personal things were respected. The communication with myself and other family was very good. I liked the way they separated patients at meals who needed more assistance from those who were more independent. My father was disturbed at times by being around those who were less functional so this was a good way to shield him from this and give him more of a feeling of being in his own home and not a hospital. Over the years of his decline he was in many facilities and this was the one I felt was the best experience for all of us.
