I am in this facility now and have yet to be seen or assisted in the 24 hours I have been here. I will check myself out in the morning. Horrible place and nursing staff is terrible.

Food - not much selection...usually soup and hamburger. My Dad could not eat them repeatedly. We ended up bringing food daily so he could eat. Service - there were times, my Dad had to keep calling the staff for drinking water and help to relieve himself (#2). At discharge, the Nurse told us all my Dad's medicines were in his bag hanging behind his wheelchair. Not true. At home, when it was time for my Dad to take his meds, they were not in his bag. He has diabetes and heart condition. He missed taking meds. Unacceptable! The Charge Nurse did acknowledge the meds were still in their facility.

Once again, my mom’s anxiety played into issues. She wasn’t happy at Kearny Mesa Convalescent either. In my opinion, it was a good facility, but she just was not happy. The nighttime staff would not always come running to her because they had other patients as well. She said she’d be hot, and they would not take care of her. So I had to call the nurses’ station and have them go and check on her, find out why she is hot, does she have a fever, what is going on, and they would go check on her. It seemed they gave her food more tailored to her needs because I noticed that her roommate did not get the same thing she did, and I liked that.

Kearny Mesa Convalescent is just a nursing home for people who have been through an operation. They took very good care of my wife. The food was mediocre. She wasn't there because of her memory, and she wasn't there for assisted living where she was expected to stay, but the people were attentive. The facility was alright. The rooms were kind of crowded. They have some people who have their own room, and some are two to a room with a shared bathroom. The thing is there was not much space. The residents were simply just sitting around the hall. There really wasn't a facility where you can have much activity together. The sanitation was good. They wheeled her down to the dining room where they sat two to a table. That was alright. On her first week, they fed her in her room which is alright too. I had no complaints with the servings and things like that.

The care that my mom is receiving at Kearny Mesa is pretty good. The staff are friendly. My mom doesn’t seem to care for their food that much, though.

I had stayed at Kearny Mesa Convalescent and Nursing Home for two weeks and I was pretty comfortable there. They were good with the rehab. The staff and the food were pretty good also. The facility was clean and I don't have any problem with it. The room was pretty comfortable and one thing that was good about it was that everyone had their own TV which could be pulled out so it could be closer to your bed and I was glad for that. They also had activities and different things. They also had a room with a bigger TV. They had Halloween night where kids came in and they gave them candies and that was good for the residents.

One of us heard a doctor say that, "If I had to go to a convalescent hospital, this is the one I would choose." The nurses do treat those they care for with dignity and respect and care. They deserve gold medals. The patient who can speak and ambulate in a wheelchair can be happy here. I believe, for those who have difficulty speaking and ambulating, due to stroke, more is needed. In some cases, the sleeping quarters are quite narrow and small. Help to the bathroom is not available and diapers must be worn by the patient I know. It is my impression, that despite the good will, loving hearts and so on of the staff, some patients who are not lively and able to speak and get around, will feel left behind and left out. A CNA hired to give perhaps a full day or partial day's one-on-one care would be desirable to assist in that case. I would like to see a larger area for visitation and perhaps a walk-in bathtub for the residents. The bathing facilities look ancient and drab. Perhaps the patio could be enclosed or screened and made into a "sun room" with less wind and patients could enjoy benefits of Vitamin D from sunshine. I know so little about what could be done. The hallways are a little crowded for the wheelchairs. Dining room always stinks.

My Mother has now been at Kearny Mesa for seven months. The loving care she has received is incredible. She has asked them to do many extras-bring her warm milk at night, rub her feet, rearrange her pillows- and the staff does so with grace. The nurses have been responses to changes in her health and have been good about notifying us. It is wonderful to have a facility we can trust. They are well staffed with nurses but slightly understaffed with CNA's-but they make up for it with the heart they put in the job.
