I visited this facility

We went to Whitten Heights Assisted Living. The staff was very warm and friendly. The facility needs some maintenance. They need to focus a little bit more on their cleanliness. I saw a cigarette butt on the dining room floor. I asked the lady, who I believe was the manager, and I asked her, 'Why is there a cigarette butt? Are the residents allowed to smoke? She said, 'No, they're not, so they must have come in to smoke inside.' That told me that maybe they're not watching their residents as much as I would like them to be watched because there are people that need to be watched at all times, they're sick, and they have dementia. I'm surprised that the maintenance staff hadn't cleaned it up already. As you walk down, there's a little ramp that takes you down to the dining room area, and this was before dinner, so they should have cleaned that up already. It's not run down. It needs upgrading like maybe fresh paint. But overall, it was a good experience. Nothing spectacular. I saw the calendar of activities, but I did not see any of the residents doing any activities. They were just mostly sitting down or walking around. The rooms are very basic. They need upgrading. The rooms themselves need fresh paint and perhaps even a new carpet. I noticed (and this was in the hallway) that it was a bright green floor. It had a gritty feeling to it. I asked the staff what was going on with the floor, and she said, 'Well, we recently had the carpet pulled out because of the wheelchairs.' And I said, 'Are you going to put tile down or is it going to stay like this?' And she says, 'It's going to stay like this. Hopefully, in the future, we'll change it, or maybe we'll put tile down.' So that was a little off-putting for me. It needs upkeep. I didn't feel a lot of pride like I did at the other facility. The rooms were basic, and they smelled a little musty. It needs to be upgraded. I wasn't impressed.

My friend liked Whitten Heights because of its price and location. It was in the same neighborhood where she was going to church. I think the tour girl was the owner, and she was very nice, very pleasant, very acceptable, and very welcoming. The room was clean, neat, and I believe they had it repainted. Another thing was that she had a dog. There was a little sliding glass door with a mini patio out on the back that she could have the dog go out. So, I thought it was a good fit for her. We were happy with it. The atmosphere of the place was just comfortable. We also had dinner there. I thought the food was OK. It was a lot of home cooking. The dining area was spacious, nice, and well-kept. They had some outings scheduled, but they were canceled due to COVID. They were looking forward to getting back to some of them. Considering that it was very low cost (from $2,500 a month to $2,700 a month) compared to all the others we looked at (which was about $4,000), it was appropriate. It was not fancy by any stretch, but there was a nice patio area that was was very pleasant.

My aunt has chosen Whitten Heights. She likes it, she has her own room, bathroom, and everyone is very helpful. Everything seems to be fine. She has been there a little over a month now. I'm not allowed to go in there, so I haven't really met many of the staff. However, the staff was very helpful, and so was the owner. She was very nice. My aunt likes most of the food. She plays bingo almost every day and they have arts and crafts going on right now. The only thing they don't have that they used to have when I put her in there was a hairdresser or a barber. They really need one because since they're not allowed out, they need to get their hair done. In the room that my aunt has, she has a refrigerator. She could have a microwave, but she doesn't need one of those. Her room has a little sink with a cupboard up above it.

Whitten Heights had an old smell to it. The room was adequate. The staff member during the tour was very informative and caring. They had someone playing the piano when I was there, and they had an arts and crafts room. It didn't seem as happy as the other place I visited. They have to be down for breakfast at a certain hour. They have a courtyard with a smoking area, and there are other people there that smoke, which is a positive for my dad.

My mother moved into Whitten Heights, and we've been happy. They serve three meals, and she said it's good. They do Bingo a lot, a guy recently came in and played musical instrument, they have trivia, and somebody comes once a week to talk about senior issues. They get her up every morning, help her with showers, and get her dressed. The staff is friendly, they know her by name, and they know where her room is.

We are very pleased with Whitten Heights, and my father is very happy. The food is to be desired, low carbs, low fat and low salt. The activities and things that they do have are really sufficient for him. The staff is excellent, they all know him by his first name which he is very happy about. He feels like he is in a house because everybody cares about him. They are very attentive, and the director is phenomenal. I couldn’t say anything bad about the facility. I am really impressed with the referral, and my dad is very happy.

We chose to remove our loved one from this facility. For nearly a year they lost/cut staff and were no longer providing the care promised and making no effort to retain good staff. Without activities and brain stimulation, memory care patients languished, parked in front of one small TV constantly showing old movies. Maintenance suffered visibly - there were broken elevators, heaters and AC units, unsafe toilets, warped and poorly installed flooring. It's shabby and dingy and the lack of effort shows despite the new paint. The friendly and hard-working staff lacked training, experience and frankly, support from administrators. I can’t honestly recommend Whitten Heights. Do your research: https://secure.dss.ca.gov/CareFacilitySearch/Search/Detailview/306004192/740#detailview

There is no place like home but Home isn't always an option. I truly feel like Whitten staff treated my dad with integrity, respect and love. Melchore and Maria went above and beyond to make sure my dad was well taken care of even during his last days. You have to remember that the staff are not trained nurses, they are caregivers but we would not have known the difference. They really went out of their way to make sure his medications were correct, that he was fed and bathed and as comfortable as possible with hospice care. Of course everyone's first choice would be to have their loved one at home but that's not always an option. We didn't have that option. But if you have to send your love one somewhere to be taken care, appreciated with dignity and respect then I would highly recommend Whitten Heights.

Whitten Heights is where I placed my mom. The room that my mom is in worked out well. They have a salon and activities. Every time I go in there, they have them doing something. My mom is in the memory ward, so they have music and games. I would recommend them. My wife’s uncle may be going there next.

I visited this facility

I was unhappy with Whitten Heights. The people were nice, but it was like a ghost town. Every hallway looked the same with nothing hanging on the walls. There weren't any memory cabinets next to each door where they could put pictures. My mother would be up on the second floor, so as we went to the second and the third floor where the ceiling seemed lower. We didn’t like it. It seemed kind of empty. They need to improve on being more warm and on the overall look. The whole décor was not warm and welcoming. I would never put my mother there.

Whitten Heights was a wonderful and beautiful place. The presentation was great, and I met a wonderful employee. Everything was in great shape and kept up well. They have a menu and activities for the people. The price was great. They had a piano, a place where they can smoke outside, and trips two to three times a week to different places for shopping.

I visited Whitten Heights. It was very nice, and I thought I would like having my mom there. The tour was nice. Becky was very informative; however, she said my mom could not be accepted there but kept in touch, which I was grateful for. I was impressed with what I had seen. They really tried to keep the people busy and made them do different things. The rooms were very nice. You could have a private or a shared room.

The appearance of Whitten Heights is improving. They’ve done a lot of work there in the last year with painting and carpeting. I think my mother-in-law is OK with the food. There’s nothing exceptional about the room. It’s a small room, probably 75 ft to 100 ft, that has air conditioning, but that’s about it. For the most part, the staff is good, except for their social director.

My husband was in Whitten Heights for two months. It was a pretty nice, affordable place. The director was very compassionate and helped me a lot.

Whitten Heights is a good facility with good management. It should be a great place for my father to get care for his Alzheimer’s and his memory care. So far, so good. He has just moved in on Sunday, and everything is good. They’re fantastic thus far. The food is good too. The dining area is nice. They have a calendar filled with activities, so activities seem good.

Provider Response

Sean's father is a wonderful man with a desire to be social and visit with other residents when he isn't reading. We are glad Sean chose Whitten Heights for his father, he is making new friends already.

Whitten Heights was a very nice facility, and the director was great. It was a great experience, and she gave me a lot of information. I thought the room was beautiful; it was like a room in a hotel.
