Most people think Texarkana, TX, got its name from its location, but some historians swear it's named after a drink -- texarkana bitters -- that's still served on both sides of the border. Seniors living in Texarkana's nine assisted living communities might want to try the drink on one of the outings many local properties schedule for their residents.
Texas' assisted living communities in Texarkana and elsewhere are regulated by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services, which splits residential care homes into two categories, depending on the level of care they provide. Assisted living is Type A, where residents can live with a lot of independence, just needing help with various activities of daily living (ADLs), such as taking medication and personal care. Staff also typically provide 24-hour emergency response and meal prep for residents.
