I toured Reunion Plaza Senior Care & Rehab Center Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation. It was newer and cleaner. The person assisting with the tour was fine, but the staff was non-committal. They seemed like they just wanted to get their eight hours in and get home, and that’s fine, that’s what people do. They didn’t seem busy, but they appeared to be. They tried to look busy, too busy to look up and speak, or anything. But you could tell they didn’t seem like they cared. They’re probably doing their job, but they don’t seem to be happy about it. It’s an older place, but it’s kept up clean. It doesn’t have that smell, no odor.

Edgewood Manor talked a real good game. They said that they would do the therapy and my mother would be able to walk the halls and talk with the other people that were there. They’ve got a hallway. Because of CDC (I didn’t know about the CDC), when you go into a facility, you’re not allowed to go anywhere essentially except they could take her to the activities room and the physical therapy room, and she could be there in her room for 14 days. They don’t tell you that.
For the first two weeks, she had nothing but a hospital gown on and a diaper. They brought her to a doctor’s appointment, and they were a couple of hours late. They had her dress nice, she looked nice, hair pulled up with a rubber band in it, but that’s the only time she looked nice the whole time she was over there. She spent 20 days there.
I went back over there the day I was gonna get her. They called the day before, "What time do you want to pick her up?" I said, "Between 3 and 5 in the afternoon." I got there around 4:00 or so, and she’s not ready to go. She was laying there with a shirt on and with a diaper that she tried to tear one side off. She was soaked and it ran through the pee pads into the bed. She could stand up when she went over there. She could walk and she was eating, but when I got her home, I had to spoon-feed her. The 10 pajama bottoms that she never wore disappeared. I’ve got four hangers with stuff on it of other people’s clothes. I would not recommend it. I would give it no stars.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Texarkana, TX
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
